You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Thanks. Are there more dancefloor routines or performances?

It's on DVDs but they are chopped up into "Best Of" DVDs. "Best Of" usually means the artists that have been worn out on radio for decades and have already appeared on numerous TV shows throughout the years also. I have one of the DVDs. That particular one just happened to be in a store and I bought it. It was decent. It had performances from The Isley Brothers, Barry White, and Aretha Franklin, but hell, they've all been worn out on radio for decades and I've seen Aretha Franklin on every show under the sun througout the years so that was no big thrill.

I've come out better recording the old episodes in their entirety when they aired on TV in recent years because I now have footage of folks like The Barkays, The Brothers Johnson, Rick James with Teena Marie, Cameo, Con Funk Shun, Brick, etc. that haven't been worn out all over the VH1 and BET channels throughout the years.

I agree that it was better to see the old episodes, but the entire dvd set is fun to watch. Yes, they do have the same-old songs that you have heard on oldies stations over and over, but a lot of the live performances are well worth it. Also, you can't beat the vintage Johnson Products commercials and the Marvin Gaye/Smokey Robinson basketball episode.

I wish there was a way for the dancers to get something. They probably don't get anything from this. I will ask around. Back then they used to bring in KFC and soda, they weren't getting paid. The artists were great, but the dancers made the show what it was as well.

I agree that they made the show, but the dancers were the "audience" of the show and no show pays the audience royalities.

Does anyone know if the artist gets paid for the shows re-airing or from the dvd sales? I'm sure the songwriters get paid, though.

If the files of American Bandstand or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert would open their vaults for dvd. Wishful requests but it's great to see some quality footage of interview parts where Dick Clark chats with 80s soul artists such as Patrice Rushen, Gap Band, Con Funk Shun and a whole bunch of others. Some of those interviews are from years which have me hmmm wonder what they performed their on that show, lol.

Thanks for the information. I would like it so I could watch the dancers properly in detail though the music content sounds great too.
