Yeah, I know but I couldn't resist....
But I still get the impression that they were none too fond of Braxton. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

LOL! I picked up the same vibe.
I love their ballads but Mint throws down on Runaway... this is the song that hooked me and I really hope they do more stuff like this.
Brother, You're In Pain..

Tbh, I kinda like the happy ending episodes too... nobody od's or goes bankrupt or beats up their wives and stuff.
If a lil shade toward TB is the worst thing then I'd say Mint is doing real good. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Thanks for posting! Great tune. I for one love the diversity of this band. I think its their biggest strength. Sure they've been known for great ballads but the most criminal oversight for the general public is all that great Jazz, Rock and Funk stuff they've been doing for years. Unfortunately they've been pigeonholed into a R&B ballad band but that doesn't come close to capture what this band is about.

These cats are still telling stories in their songs. Love it.

One thing I learned is the pattern of how bands that learn together in high school, gel to be unstoppable force on the performing & recording stage. This seems to be the pattern of bands on Unsung. A great teacher & someone who instills their creativity and allows them time to express their musical creativity.
It amazed me and they didn't mention enough was how Stokley could follow the musical turn arounds w/ his voice. Now you think how many musicians/vocalists can do that and you are not going to use 2 hands to count them on. Perfect example of that is "U Send Me Swinging" Stokes was born to sing w/ any instrument...maybe not banjo. If Mint had a different vocalist the singer wouldn't do the twists and turns w/ the instrumentation. It would be pretty straight ahead & bland. Stokley has the rare ability to turn the mic into a weapon.
Stokley turned down so many chances to go solo, that is true loyalty. I think fans still have a curiosity what it would sound like. But we wouldn't want a standard group of producers trying their hardest each to get a radio hit.
I still think though that uptempo Mint Condition is just as great as slow tempo, I just think the radio didn't get the right remix. In that era you were dealing w/ Devante,Teddy Riley,Dallas Austin & Jimmy Jam,etc. That is almost impossible for someone to just jump into that & get their spotlight. They had to get a HIT off album number 1, anything. One other thing, if they had a dj like the one in Washington pushing the uptempo after a while the people would be saying "Who the hell is this group"
If you really were just thrown out there, I really don't think anyone criticizing them would be able to stand in that industry climate. That is the amazing thing, all the other bands went down in flames but M.C.. Not even Tony Toni Tone was able to stand. Just the Roots and Mint,
I think what will happen w/ Mint condition is there will be standards reinterpeted and discovered in Jazz field and people will say "I had no idea, that this band had this caliber of songwriting" The criticism that was there before will disappear and people will start seeing this band was far ahead in terms of recording in a band context in the marketplace they had to merge w/. Some music historian is going to point that out in the near future when the record needs to be stated.
P.S. Are you Free in a Parallel universe is a smash and Mint are uptempo masterminds of the dancefloor. Somewhere at Julliard & Berkeley in 20 years they will be studying the uptempo aural science of M.C. that has the ability heal animals & humans alike. We will find out that everytime Stokley laid down a vocal, a planet was created.

Ironically i just read an interview with Ricky Kinchen on Black America Web. He admitted and laughed about it that it looked like they were lying and making excuses as to why they didn't go to the wedding. but it had to do more with Keri and not Toni. Rick stated he didn't attend because of the things Keri was asking for before he exited the band. Just remembering Rick talking about the whole situation when they re entered the game with Luxury Brown, Keri wanted more of the cheddar for writing and producing and the rest of the guys weren't having it. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint
