What are your requirements for an artist to be considered GIFTED? I've heard the phrase "talent is subjective"... but I would like to know what is the org's criteria for an artist to be considered gifted or talented? | |

Hmmm.
You know it when you hear it.
Fiona Apple is what I would consider a gifted writier.
Have you heard her lyrics?
Now Taylor Swift is considered a talented songwriter and I agree at times she can paint a vivid picture, but if you listen to Fiona Apple you can see the difference in what truly gifted songwriting is.

They are part of creating their art, by either writing their own material, playing or singing it. Arrangements skills are also something I value pretty high, even though not many pop artists do this... Performances are pretty important as well.. I also respect artists with a message. I think it's actually a combination of skill and style.
Nice to see someone mentioning arrangements.
I suppose people don't usually mention that as they think music is just first written by someone and then it gets recorded by various people adding different parts to it in a fairly random manner. Too many songs these days just follow standardized formats that are pretty unimaginative and tiring to listen to (especially the type that has almost ballad like verses and layered, loud choruses without any sense of space at all). When I hear that type of stuff my first impression might actually be that the artists aren't that "gifted" if they have to resort to that and don't have something more unique to offer.

Fiona's just batshit nuts. That's why I fucks with her. Taylor has a ton of catchy pop hits, like the 1 (1s, maybe, When the Pawn... was promising in it's own right and probably did well, I have no shits for it). Wish both there numbers where in my phone, but I'll find a talentless (musically, whatever) substitute. For all time I am with you, you are with me. | |

[Edited 3/10/13 12:14pm] You are very right and I think that sadly in these days, many artists just want to follow the basic form of ABA pop standard without really having a deeper thought of arrangement or variations in tonality. I wish more pop artists would take an interest in the art of music and not just the monetary side. If younger artists would take the time to study old music (classic music, jazz, blues etc) they would learn to develop their skills and make better music. As a musician I sometimes feel frustrated with modern pop stars not having basic knowledge of what they are doing.
