Bruno Mars recieved some serious comparaisons of his work to early-MJ's work.. if you visit his song "Moonshine official audio" video in youtube you'll find out that probably 99% of people who comment find that it's too similar to Michael Jackson (The production & the chorus).
And i find it original because Bruno is influenced by Mike so much so he channeled him in Moonshine, influenced by The Police also so he gave us Locked out of Heaven. Yeah why original? Bruno is not doing what other do in the industry, he tries as hard as possible to give fresh music, his "Unorthodox Jukebox" album is the best to come out since Amy Winehouse' Back to Black album concering music and production.. (i'm talking about worldwide artists).
But also Bruno is highly influenced by Prince and he stated that "Purple Rain" and "1999" are in his top 10 songs of all-time. You can see the influence on his song "Gorilla" in his 2nd album.. Bruno does not only do Pop/R&B he also sings Reggae, new wave, rock.. i think nobody has even been so musically varied than Prince.. but seriously Bruno is in the right path to be the first Bruno Mars.
I don't understand why people always have to compare a young artist to a legend.. Bruno honestly needs to leave his cheesy lyrical themes and get into them special subjects, but i can say that HE IS THE BEST MALE ARTIST we have in this generation, he sings LIVE, his vocal talent is undeniable. he plays like 7 instruments and yeah to the haters who'd say that Prince plays 100 instruments i'd say Bruno is fuckin 27 years old and he had a career since 2 years so don't expect him to play every instrument.
And you know there ain't no need to hate this guy, Janelle Monaé who is probably what Prince likes about this generation conciders Bruno as one of the best artists and they worked together + toured toghether.. and i won't be surprised if both of them will pay the Prince tribute at Billboard Music Awards next May.
P.S.: Bruno is a producer also (for the guy who quoted Wikipedia shit). He's the founder of The Smeezingtons which is a two-time Grammy nominated producer team, y'all probably don't know it but the three of them, Bruno & Phil and Ari are behind the song "Fuck You" by Cee Lo Green.

You tell yourself that. Eight producers?
Whose artistic statement is that supposed to be exactly?
An artist is not a team, music shouldn't have a credit list as long as a fucking movie. It really shouldn't. I've not heard the album but i'm guessing by it's title, there's an eclectic, diverse range of music on there?
Wouldn't this be more impressive if few as possible people came up with it?

It is for great composition. Its like putting together a collection of clothing, the designer does not do all the work. To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.

I dig this kid...best new r&b/pop stuff I have heard in years. There is no question he is talented, but the new Prince? Um...no
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I guess that's true, but that's clothing.
I think music for someone who is a solo artist should be a more personal thing. Bruno is talented, he's not a bad act at all, he plays, he could busk, Rihanna couldn't.
there are worse successful 'artists' out there for sure.

Hot Chip's last LP had some hefty Prince influences, Linn drum and all. They even mentioned he was/is a big influence. Not the next Prince, but definitely more talented than Bruno Top40.

I don't think that there will every be a new Prince, but if the OP was thinking in terms of New Edition could be The Temptations revisited...then yeah. Not so much Bruno, as much as Miguel.

Bruno is one of the better young artists of today. I love his live act. There's really no reason to burden him with comparisons to Prince or anyone else. He's doing fine just being himself. There is scant evidence to suggest that he is the new Prince, nor does he need to be.
At this point he could go in any direction or fizzle out in a few years. I hope that he continues to nurture and develop his own unique style and establish a long, successful career because I really like the kid. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

DNonsense no one can replace Prince .....They can be influenced like D'Angelo and Miguel but will Never walk in his shoes

Actually, I did vibes on "For You"--it's kind of hidden, in that vague "Special thanks to God,... and You." I'm "You."
Seriously, Bruno doesn't do everything, but not all of those credits are things Prince does either. A&R? Business affairs? (God knows he can't do that) His first album had an executive producer (though the Smeezingtons is Bruno, along with his partners). Prince has credited engineers and mastering people. And although he didn't always credited musicians, it's rumored/established that people did play a few notes on albums that weren't credited, exactly.
No, Bruno probably isn't the next Prince. But the first two Prince albums didn't indicate that Prince would ever be the first Prince, either. I don't see where he really had the vibe you describe until later, either. He wasn't even playing live at that point. Dirty Mind is when Prince started, and when his live act started. Bruno's arguably ahead, as of right now (two albums in). Let's wait until album three to see what happens (that's also when Prince started off with proteges).

Not to sound rude but why are people constantly trying to compare new artists to old?
Let an artist be who they are... idc for Bruno but let him be Bruno and Prince be well Prince
I also see people saying this person is the new so and so... it's like saying that person wants to be someone else and not have an identiy all of their own.
Stevie Wonder was once called the new Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen was called the new Bob Dylan, R. Kelly was called the new Sam Cooke, and Led Zeppelin the new Rolling Stones.
When actually the artists are very different from each other and have an idenity all their own despite being inspired by a certain artist.
Let an artist stand on it's own

This is
why you can't predict who's gonna be the next Prince. Ask me in 1995? Yeah, could be. Ask me in 2000? Well, maybe--but there doesn't seem to be that MUCH music in him. Ask me in 2013... 18 years after Brown Sugar? When he's still 99% done? Good lord. No, D'Angelo isn't the new Prince anymore than Bruno Mars is. D'Angelo is a fair amount of promise, but mostly a whole lot of hope. Bruno's a lot less promise, but he's working.
I've enjoyed the live stuff that's been around the last few months, but he's wasted too many years, and probably too much of himself during his "sabbatical." He might at one point have seemed like the new Prince, but he isn't new anymore and he sure ain't Prince.
Bruno's two albums don't match D'Angelo's--but I'm pretty sure Bruno's gonna have a 3rd and 4th and the chance to grow. I don't really expect that from D'Angelo, though I'd be pleased to see it.

Agree with this! And I want to add that NO, Bruno Mars is not the new Prince. He is not the new Michael Jackson either. Bruno Mars is the first and only Bruno Mars! He's got an unique identity all his own and can hold his own as an artist. I think he's wonderful and has the potential to be really great. His talent as a songwriter is still maturing and developing. But the guy has a great voice and can really sing. He has the ability to convey emotion and move the audience with his songs and live performances which, btw he's a great live performer too. I expect him to be around for quite awhile. And I would love to see and hear a Bruno Mars Janelle Monae collaboration! That would be MJ L.O.V.E: https://www.facebook.com/...689&type=2 / YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/us...nderSilent

This is what I always say about Bruno: He's an exceptional performer with much talent and flair. All of that same energy doesn't resonate in his albums or singles. Check me out and add me on:

While D'Angelo is far better artist and performer than Bruno will ever be, I still can't put D'Angelo nowhere near the greats because his momentum isn't there. I certainly agree with you. Check me out and add me on:

Even though his momentum isn't there. U can't deny his muziq & performance level hasn't lost a step since he last hit the scene....Just like Prince,D'angelo sounds even better live... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.
