Oh man, I grew up on this record. The sound of it is so evocative--not just of my own memories but of some other place and time. I've not been able to get into every RLJ effort but this one is in my top 20...maybe even top 10 of all time. This one will always move me... ...Last Chance Texaco And this one will always make me move :) ...Danny's All Star Joint

Last Chance Texaco is a wonderful example of how a singer merges her own voice in with the band instrumentation to evoke physical sounds from the lyrics to create the actual experience for the listener of the character in the song... i.e. the sense of desperation embodied by the impersonal sound of cars whooshing by... Rickie does it with her voice along with the band... Who does this anymore?!! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Some might argue that Bjork uses her voice in that instrumental way but she doesn't have the same level of interpretative skill of RLJ, IMO. Rickie is that wonderful blend of jazz vocalist and storyteller. The live version of "My Funny Valentine" on the "Duchess of Coolsville" box set (don't know if that was on an official album) is the best version of that song I've ever heard. Her voice is a tenor sax. Just incredible. Edit: It was from "Girl at Her Volcano." And I guess alto sax is more accurate : ) [Edited 3/4/13 21:38pm]

I haven't had the pleasure of hearing Ricki do My Funny Valentine. I couldn't even post the album version of Coolsville--because it wasn't on Youtube. I would love to hear her version of Valentine. I saw her live about three to four years ago, and although she started out slow (drinking!) she picked it up and hit it hard when we in the audience started singing the lyrics she forgot... Ended up being a good and very personal concert... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato
