2Hr. Unsung Tonight - "Disco" Who's watching...

Besides Vainandy? lol I'll have to catch it online the next day. Should be fun. I wonder where they'll start the conversation and where they'll end it.

Here's a sneek peak:

I may watch. It sounds like the most interesting episode of Unsung this season.

Nile Rogers will be featured on this episode. He was on the Tom Joyner Morning Show today and said that TV-One has already contacted him about expanding this Disco feature into another episode for next season.

I'm excited about this episode.

*crosses fingers that it will be*. I wouldn't be mad, if they'd made it into a 3 hour show. But, i'll take the 2 lol .

I don't know. Nile didn't really say. He was just on for a few minutes, but did not go into any details.

Yeah I heard that this morning too. In the sneak peek link I posted you'll hear Niles saying that they used to call the women's bathroom in Studio 54, "Niles Office" because that where he would always be with coke, women.

There's a lot of information to cover. Here's to doing that time period justice...drink

basically they are going to deal with what vh1 talk about with nile, dona summer, the sunshine band. it will be cool to hear from b or c level disco artist like dr buzzard band, the ritchie family, hue corporations, etc, etc etc,. also if they can talk about other hot night clubs other then studio 54 that will be cool too.

This one will definitely be on the dvr. I have Nile Rodger's biography and need to stay still long enough to read it. I've already read snippets, so I know it's a juicy read.

I"ll be there. And I also have Nile's book- it was a great read, as well as "Chic: Everybody Dance: The Politics of Disco." It came out in 2004, might be out of print- but if you can find it, it's interesting.

Although I'm excited about tonite's episode I'm wondering why they consider Disco unsung? Wasnt it a worldwide cultural phenomenon? It made a huge imact musically, socially and culturally.

I'll take a guess and say that disco, like many of the artists associated with it (like Chic and Sister Sledge) was wildly successful with major pop crossover appeal for several years, then fell off suddenly without fulfilling its full potential. Donna Summer was the only one who continuted to have major success in the pop music market in the 80's while others faded away or were restricted to the R&B format.

Because it'll get more viewers than one about zydeco. razz lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I think thats a good guess and based on tonite's episode, I would say that assessment was correct nod

I thought it was a good episode, too, but I think that it glossed over a lot of things and acts. It seemed to me that they created this episode to cover the acts of the era instead of focusing on individual acts. I think a KC and the Sunshine Band one would have been much better.

That's pretty much why I didn't watch. I don't like those types of specials. I like them when it focuses on individuals. It's easy to get lost when they try covering a genre or a year concerning music. Which is why I wasn't a fan of those decade Behind the Music documentaries.

While this wasn't an all-encompassing disco documentary, I really enjoyed it. It reminded me less of "Behind The Music" and more of British dance music documentaries. Nice mixture of interviews with well-known stars, lesser known acts and behind-the-scenes players. They provided a nice musical & social history lesson. This episode's argument is 70s' disco is unsung because it hasn't been given the respect it truly deserves.

Favorite Parts:

-Candi Staton and Nile Rodgers' interviews and Earl Young's drumming demos.

-Established acts like Gloria Gaynor & Harry Casey admitting they initially resented The Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever success. BGs were viewed as late-comers that hitched on the bandwagon.

-Victor Willis admitting he was ignorant of The Village People's gay overtunes, until the third album. Nevermind that he was the lead singer and co-wrote the songs. lol

-Janice-Marie Johnson of "Taste of Honey" revealing she became a limo driver after the disco backlash. The SOS Band were great tippers, apparenty.

-Despite the disco backlash in '79, the last big hit of the era, "Good Times" laid the foundation for the first hip-hop movement's first hit "Rapper's Delight".
