Org Mixtape Project: Alexzander "heavy blue sky"

Heavy Blue Sky

http://8tracks.com/alexza...y-blue-sky

These songs have been on repeat for one reason or another for the past couple of weeks. Rhythm is the element that links these songs. For most part the music is pretty laid-back, but the percussion moves things forward. If this mix was made tomorrow it would probably include completely different songs and have a totally different vibe. But at this moment these are the songs that are speaking to me. Hope you enjoy the ride! cool

  1. Talk Talk - After the Flood

Dreamy, jazzy, and atmospheric. This song works well on it own, but should be heard in the context of the entire album 'Laughing Stock' to really be appreciated. Stellar song from an incredible album.

2. Cinematic Orchestra - Child Song (live)

I love everything about this live version, starting with the audience applauding, and then being presented this beautiful piece of music. The music is lush and layered, and the vocals are angelic. Good vibes.

3. Mandrill - Children of the Sun

Reminds me of being in elementary school and discovering my uncles music stash. This is positive SOUL music. Alive and vibrant.

4.Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Coma Pony

Again, its about the way this one moves rhythmically. Its almost in the same instrumental vein as the Mandrill cut, but with a modern take on things.

5. Coheed and Cambria - ...Evagria the faithful

Most of their music is pretty heavy, but this one has an emphasis on groove, and the polyrhythms make the chorus really interesting and hypnotic. One of my faves from pt.1 of their last album.

6. Alexzander - The warriors heart

Definitely inspired by Ardvark15 and Paisleypark4 to include an original tune in my mix. Put this together today as a bridge into the next song. Everything was basically recorded in one take, and its not really mixed ( smile disclaimer), but I felt like it would fit in with the other songs, and work as a segue into...

7.Robert Glasper Project feat. Bilal - Letter to Hermione

THis song is brilliant and deserves as much of an audience as possible. I heard this before I heard the Bowie original, and as much as I dig Bowie, this is the definitive version for me.

8. Depeche Mode - Heaven

The Gore/Gahan harmony during the chorus gives me chills.

...

I can tell right away this is right down my alley, an ethereal groove trip!!!!

...

1. Talk Talk - After the Flood

I see what you mean about this one-- softly surging, atmospheric piece---I love the way it slowly builds.....

...

2. Cinematic Orchestra - Child Song (live)

...

Nice feel to this ethereal Cinematic Orchestra groove---- For some reason, I could see David Sylvian singing over this...is there more of this track?

...

3. Mandrill - Children of the Sun

...

Good lord, this took me back! I haven't heard this in quite a while. Damn, remember when Soul music could be this earthy, loose and Funkafied??!!!

4.Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Coma Pony

...

Ok, I guess that anwers my question--Wow, nice segue from the last track--almost sounds like Santana groovin' with Mandrill.....

...

5. Coheed and Cambria - ...Evagria the faithful

...

Got caught up in this piece-- I really love the full sound, and everything that's going on in these rhythms...I'll have to investigate Coheed and Cambria further, but I'm really enjoying this....

...

6. Alexzander - The warriors heart

...

Aww, man--- nice cut, nice meld of African rhythyms and driving guitar--like your compositional stroke-- I Hope we hear more from you! This is Too Kool....

...

7.Robert Glasper Project feat. Bilal - Letter to Hermione

...

I love all the tracks from this project, but I agree, this one of my favorite pieces from the album. I know Robert and Bilal go way back, but you can feel how relaxed each one is with the other, they blend beautifully together! I wonder if Bowie has heard this, I kinda think he'd dig it!

...

8. Depeche Mode - Heaven

...

I really like this DM track. Funny, all these years, and I didn't realize until now how much this kind of Depeche Mode reminds me of Tears for Fears...to my ears, anyway....

...

Aww, man---That 's the end?! I was waiting for more tracks to pop up--I was like, "why did the music stop?"....I thought 8tracks froze up, or something, LOL!!!

Anyway, I really enjoyed this aural trip, Alexzander, really nice choices--I'll be listening again! Thanks for the sounds!!!

REALLY dig the Cinematic Orchestra and Mandrill tracks. I listen to instrumental music a lot and those are both good ones.

Coma Pony was cut really short for me. Anybody else have that problem?

The Warriors Heart is you, right? Very cool. Gettin' all shreddy n' stuff. A little short, though. And the volume is lower than the track before and after it, so I had to turn it up and then jump quickly to turn down the next one. lol

Yeah, I hadnt done any mixing to that track. Consider that payback. Im listening to your mix now (which is really cool, btw) and the intro to "Distances" just scared the shit out of me. lol

Thanks for the feedback!

I hear you lol I just made it up to last weeks. The thing is, that I listened to them. The issue has been finding the time to translate my thoughts into writing. And then by the time I sit down to write, Ive forgotten what I thought about the songs, and the viscious cycle continues. Its all good, though because I've really enjoyed the mixes, so listening more than once is cool lol
