If you are looking for albums most fans agree that Antichrist Superstar (1996), Mechanical Animals (1998) and Holy Wood (In the Valley of the Shadow of Death) (2000) are probably his three best albums. Individual songs? Just youtube the tracks from his best of album (Lest We Forget: The Best of).

If you have more questions all you need do is ask. There are a few Marilyn Manson fans around here who should be able to point you in the right direction.

Portrait of An American Family is a masterpiece! It's the perfect place to start with his music. His best album ever!! Every track rocks!

They're quite different and since most of the guy's music is about fame and being atrocious they're from the period when he actually was famous and atrocious. The "band" has been stuck in the same type of stuff since "Mechanical Animals" anyway.

Portrait of an American Family is full of piss poor songwriting.

In all honesty, you would be better off listening to Foetus or Ministry for that type of stuff.

I'd also say Antichrist Superstar, but the cheesy-awful lyrics may puzzle you...

The first 2 albums, Portrait Of An American Family & Antichrist Superstar, and the EP release, Smells Like Children are the classics. I'm known a few people that were fans at the time that highly recommend those records.

My personal favorite is Mechanical Animals. It has the most range, and has some cool glam and funk influences that aren't found in other MM records.

Excuse you, but some rock/metal fans feel that Marilyn Manson kind of sold out OR "jumped the sharks" beginning with the Mechanical Animals era of his career.

I would add Rozz Williams's Christian Death.

Mechanical ANimals is the all time highlight for him though.

If you want the studio albums and not just the Lest We Forget greatest hits album, I'd go with the trilogy (Antichrist, Mechanical Animals, Holywood) and Golden Age Of Grotesque.

I liked "Dope Hat" and "Lunchbox" from the Portrait album, but be sure to stay away from High End Of Low and Eat Me Drink Me.

The new album, Born Villain, is good, and the best thing Manson's done since Grotesque!

He sort of ran out of visual ideas after Holy Wood. I think those have always gone hand in hand with the music on the albums.

Yeah, I know that he has used themes from burlesque and Alica In Wonderland later on, but at least I didn't find them that interesting personally. Especially as it was all conveyed through some of his most unimaginative pop / metal songs. There's a few songs on the new ones that I like here and there, but in overall... you know, meh.

You have actual taste...so I guess you can't appreciate the sweet without the sour...

Honestly, I really think you should start with Anti-Christ. This is where the band was firing at all cylinders and their songwriting grew by leaps and bounds. Touring a lot really helped them define their sound. This is their best album, as dirty and dark as it may be. It's a classic.

From there it would be a tie between Mechanical Animals and Holywood. I remember when Mechanical Animals came out everyone was like wtf and a lot of people jumped off the bandwagon becuz he did a complete 180. In hindsight this was a brilliant move artistically and the album really holds up well.

Holywood is a mixture of Mechanical Animals and Anti-christ. I must warn you though, that this is a very dark record. One that gets very intense especially in the second half (Holywood, president dead, king kill 33, valentines day- all are amazing songs).

Then I would pick up portrait. I have to disagree with those who say Portrait and Smells like Children are the nest albums. The band was still finding their sound. Both albums are very raw, and it's cool to see where they came from. But it's not their best songwriting (wrapped in plastic is amazing though).

Golen Age is severly underrated. The production here is amazing and it's full of energy. It's definitely a good record (para-noir is one to check out just for the guitar solo alone).

Born Villian would be next. I had given up on the band after The High End of Low and Eat me Drink ME (save for if I was a vampire), but he came back in a good way and really impressed me.

All that to say, taking the Marilyn Manson trip is really interesting. The guy is extremely talented and I would love to know your opinion once you had time to digest his discography.

There was some good stuff on Eat Me Drink Me, but as a whole I just couldn't dig most of it. Some of my favorites are:

The High End of Low is possibly his worst album. There is nothing there I can actually sink my teeth into.
