If the overall quality of the record will be somewhere between "Heathen" and "Reality" I guess I will be perfectly happy about it. His voice has gotten older and doesn't sound as flexible, but that was inevitable.

ok, i just became clear to me why i cannot GET INTO THIS GUY! i've tried but I realize that I HATE his voice! and that's never going to change even if i go back and listened to his "alleged" BEST stuff. he's a true artist, great concepts, (the P comparisons stop there!) but at the end of the day his voice grates. its like a ghastly chant or some shit. yuk!

About a million times better than the first single, but I still don't find it mindblowing........ as for Prince comparisons, sorry, Screwdriver blows this away.

No, no , no. 'Screwdriver' certainly does not blow this away.. seriously?? I think maybe you just don't like Bowie? Or maybe it's time for me to accept that I just don't like Prince anymore? Probably the latter neutral

I have a bit the same. Seems like the Bowie track are more mature or something, like he thought about it a little bit more. I was really blown away by "Where are we now".

Not to make this too much of a Prince-Bowie discussion, but.... I like this a million times more than "Screwdriver". Especially because of the lyrics. Where "Screwdriver" is just infantile and uninteresting, without any substance, Bowie makes you dive deeper into the lyrics, wonder what they mean. Never liked Prince's lyrics much anyway, safe for some songs. And I like "The Stars (Are Out Tonight) better musically, too.

"Where Are We Now?" was simply stunning, and this is equally brilliant. I couldn't be more thrilled with Bowie's comeback thus far. Absolutely fantastic. He's handled it perfectly and so far backed it up with 2 monumental tracks and visuals.

Can't wait for the entire album!

You do realize a large percentage of them is just abstract combinations of words and do not really try to convey anything specific?

They're not always so deep. The themes themselves, perhaps. He leaves them very sketchy in most cases anyway.

I'm so happy Bowie is making a comeback and as always I love his world of music and imagery. Strange video but so fashion forward and cutting edge, it makes you think about what you are actually watching. The song is good but no the best I've heard from him. Nontheless it seems he's back and I'm happy for that cool

I respect all opinions, man, but i had to laugh at that. Screwdriver is atrocious. Nothing artistic or fun about it, just a bad Grunge wannabe song with the most embarrassing catchphrase of the year.

David Bowie is DESTROYING Prince artistically this year and i much prefer Prince. I'm just not blind. It's telling because i'm usually so Prince positive.

Prince is being laughable with his new stuff and new statements (billboard interview) despite being refreshingly active.

Prince ain't cutting it with his new releases, they're beneath him.

Agreed. I don't know what's up with Prince's music right now, but we know he can make better music. Perhaps it's time to invest more time when making music he loves or is capable of doing, than investing it on the image. I don't know if he's trying to get new (younger) fans or what it is, but the lyricism is his new stuff is just horrible (I must admit that I'm not a big fan of his lyrics but he can pull of some pretty good stuff when he wants to)...

Anybody trying to compare a song like "Screwdriver" to Bowie's latest output should just really stop. Really.

I mean... really.

It only serves to emphasize how badly Prince has lost the plot.

Prince is taking more artistic risks by pushing a song like "Screwdriver" than David does with this one.

Not everyone here feels that the song doesn't have anything artistic or fun about it. You're in the minority with those comments.

Exactly.

Come on yall. Screwdriver isnt anything nmore than Guitar part two.

I'd say neither Bowie nor Prince are exactly taking any artistic risks with their latest output. And thats okay too though.

That's up for debate. I know there's generally a discussion about Bowie concerning style vs. substance, but he's playing with it, always has.

The songs are often "about" something and they do clearly have specific themes, but his lyric writing in many cases isn't so coherent that you could tell what the "meaning" of them "really is". He scrambles up sentences and makes contradictory statements on purpose.

None of this means I don't like his lyrics or consider them "completely meaningless". Let's just not automatically think there's some sort of a "deep" message hidden in most of those songs.

Oh, wow! I thought I was the only person that felt this way. I definitely appreciate his musicality and his lyrics, but I also don't like the tone of his voice. It grates on me. Also, I find it hard to connect to him emotionally. A lot of his lyrics are kind of abstract and he comes off as very chilly and unemotional. He is an artist for sure, but I can't really feel his music emotionally.
