No she can't. She had a good run in the late eighties/early nineties, especially considering her limited vocal abilities, but her time has passed -as her album sales clearly show- and there are others filling her spot.

A good run in the late '80s-early '90s? lol Either you have short-term memory disorder or are really young. Janet reigned from 1986-2001, and even after that she is still looked at as the blueprint-creator for JLO, Beyonce, Britney, Ciara, Mya, Kelly Rowland, Rihanna, and any other pop singer worth her weight in dancing shoes and hit songs. Hell, she had her biggest-ever first week sales with the All For You album in 2001, and she signed two of the biggest record deals in history in the '90s. Her songs are consistantly remade and sampled to this day, and everyone from Beyonce to actresses like Rayven Symone and Gabrielle Union have said she is their ultimate inspiration.

Janet's UCAP tour solidified the fact that fans all around the world are still anxious to see her live, as it was built upon her going where demand was the greatest--not from her putting out a schedule of dates and fans going to purchase tickets after the fact. She is one of the artists who consistantly come up on "Who You Want To Hear New Music From" lists, and people are still anxiously awaiting her next album. I personally think that she is truly taking this time to enjoy her life, as opposed to keeping up with the rat race of putting out an album, doing videos and photo shoots, touring, and then doing it all over again for the sake of keeping her name out there. She doesn't need to go to those extremes anymore, because her legacy is already solidified. Everytime you flick on your TV or go to Youtube and see some pop starlet dancing and singing, it's generally Janet's legacy and inspiration that you see. But, all that aside, if Janet comes back in full form and drops a hot single at radio, then that is all it would take. She's just not as fame-hungry as many of her contemporaries and many of the new stars are. She's been famous most of her life.

Her Janet album alone sold over 20 million copies which performer today is selling that off one album???

you probably believe in 120 million for Thriller and 1 billion for Elvis Presley, right? razz

U.S. - only 40%? (7-8 million)
rest sold, probably in France (peak - 16th place) and Germany (5).
This album could not sell more than 14 million wink

Damita Jo had decent sales (2.5 million), but fell in the charts.
US: 2
UK: 32
Can: 7
Aus: 18
Fra: 35

it was a clear decline after All for You, which was the top 3 everywhere.

I know MJ's figures are exaggerate. Figures are exaggerated in general razz

BUT

Janet is her highest selling album. It has at least sold 20 million copies world wide. Janet was HUGE during this period.

and this is not about Michael Jackson PLEASE leave him out of this shoot3

That and Janet is a REAL artist. She is not a media star like Beyonce, Rihanna, Chris Brown and so forth. Janet would NEVER have to come back with an album and would always be an Icon. Those other artists still have alot to prove in that department, not to mention they have yet to release an Iconic album like Rhythm Nation or a classic song.

Exaxctly. With iconic albums like Control, RN 1814, janet. and The Velvet Rope, her place in pop/R&B history is cemented. She has been inspiring dance divas and pop artists since the mid-'80s, and even with no recent new music, she is still able to tour, and is still being covered by other artists in concert (Robyn, Kelly Clarkson) in movies (P!nk covered RN for the 2011 "Happy Feet" sequel), and for their own songs (Kendrick Lamar, Plies, Drake, etc.).

Not huge? Wow, ok. lol

The janet. album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with the largest first week sales in history for a female artist at the time. It became Janet's third consecutive album to top the chart, as well as reaching the number one position in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Certified sixfold platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), it sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and is one of the world's best-selling albums. It cemented Janet as an international icon and sex symbol, and is listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 200 Definitive Albums of All Time. It produced six top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. "That's the Way Love Goes" became one of her most successful singles, staying atop the Hot 100 for eight weeks, as well as topping the singles charts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. It received two Grammy Award nominations in 1994, winning Best R&B Song. Her ballad "Again"—written for the feature film Poetic Justice—also topped the Hot 100 and garnered nominations for the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song. Academics have noted that the erotic imagery in her music videos released to promote the album's singles have contributed to a higher degree of sexual freedom among women. The MTV-sponsored Janet World Tour supporting the album received critical acclaim for Jackson's elaborate stage performances, reinforcing her reputation as one of the preeminent artists of the MTV generation. It is the fourth best selling R&B album of the soundscan era and the best-selling by a female solo artist.

Not to mention that 20 years later, artists of both sexes are still emulating the iconic album/Rolling Stone cover...

ADAM LEVINE has said that these nude pics of him are the male version of Janet's RS cover

bored No you're boring

Listen Liliflower batting eyes

Im not going to go back and forth over something meaningless lol My point was Janet was a huge era for her (musically) and that her album was successful. Thats The Way Love Goes was huge SEANMAN can give you the statistics on the song. Whether it sold 20 million or not. Its absurd to imply that she peaked in the early 90s when she was still selling out stadiums up until 2001.

Now I will leave you to calculating figures lol

We bump heads alot but this is a great post!

Here is my issue:

Some of the entertainers we have today do have some level of talent but that is not really the problem. I just dont like how they call certain performers dancers when they are not dancers or call certain performers singers when they have average vocals OR call entertainers artists when they clearly are not artists. TO ME, the entertainers of today all are lacking in more than one area but for some reason they get credit in being exceptional in all areas of music/entertainment such as: dancing, singing, music, songwriting and creativity hmmm

Its terrible because your right. It is an industry thing and since music and entertainment has turned for the worse they have brought the bar down lower anytime all someone has to do is shake their butt to be entertaining.... they really call that shit DANCING today... I mean what the fuck is everybody smoking??? neutral

I will never understand it.

The ONLY female entertainer that I have been impressed with has been Janelle Monae as far as having the overall package (good music, good songwriter, plays instrument, good dancer, good live singer, creative shows) and while I love her...... even she still dont touch Janet.

You know my feelings already on Le bron James lol He is a average ball player to me and very overrated. It was also jacked up how he left Cleaveland I have no respect for him. He had to go to another team to win a Championship which Miami barely won rolleyes and even still Thunder is still WAYYYY better than Miami

omg...that's funny.......lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

thanks for that....

and you're right...lebron james ditched on to another squad and formed a superteam to win his league mandated title...OKC was robbed.....Kevin Durant was robbed..

nod

Miami played smarter but they werent the better team. OKC were young and were rookies to the Finals.

And it IS funny.....

I laughed in that Beyonce thread when some of the orgers said Beyonce was a dancing powerhouse and that she dances her butt off..... falloff

She dancers her BUTT OFF alright... thats ALL SHE DOES but it aint dancing.

Dancing is what Janelle Monae, Mya and Jennifer Lopez does.

I am not a Jennifer Lopez fan but that heffa can dance.

this album was not a huge outside the U.S.!
it's a fact!
if you include logic and re-read, then you will understand that "not a huge" was written after the analysis of the global market ... and referred to the worldwide sales.

3 largest European market
FRA: 2 × Gold
UK: 2 × Platinum
GER: Gold
give me every reason to believe that the album was not a huge in Europe ... huge albums 90's are 4-3 x platinum.

AUS: 2 × Platinum ... not bad, but again, not impressive.
it was a huge local success (USA), but outside it was just a success (not huge), so this album could not sell 12 million outside the U.S.

I'm not fan of Janet ... but I'm trying to write an unbiased now.
I do not care how high you rate her as a performer (I rate her not high), it's a matter of taste, so I was interested in the numbers in the first place.
I have seen many lists of best-selling albums compiled by different analysts and amateurs, I have never seen a figure in excess of 14 million .. never ... so 20 million - it's just a statement and wishes of fans.

where?
Give me links to calculations or any list, compiled on the basis of expert estimates.
I wrote about my doubts.
the album was not a huge outside the United States ... to sell as many as 12 million outside the U.S. - that's a lot, and unrealistic for the album, which was not very big either in Europe or Australia.
I do not believe in the declaration, even when it comes to my favorite artists.

I can give a few examples
http://www.worldwidealbums.net/salesdata.htm

http://fanofmusic.free.fr/index.php?m=Charts&s=BestSellers&p=BestSellers&Act=85
13-14 million - a figure that I have met in each list

^^Ah, I see the little Msknowitall is at it again. confused

As for the question. I'm not sure, I don't think so.... it seems ages ago since she was able to play arenas at capacity everywhere. But then again, if she manages to get a couple of hits again, she should be able to do so... in the states for certain... as for Europe, I don't know what has to happen. It's annoying though that much lesser artists play in arenas over here. It would horrible if Janet couldn't regain her status.

No prob! See, I am attached to the vocals. The voice is number one for me, always will be. If it's a good song with weak, watered down vocals, then I'm wishing that someone else was singing it. I can't get past that part. Dancing is far down on the list. I want to know can you sing acapella, no instrument, and hold it down? If you can't, you're not going to hold my attention as an artist. As a kid I listened to Chaka, Teena, folks like that, so I can't get with the songs that have a thin voice on lead. I understand your points about the dancing too, but it's about hearing the songs, long before any visuals come into play.

I agree!

I just think Janet has a strong catalogue which mostly consists of Control- VR. For me, the LYRICS, the messages and overall music composition is what counts. Now I do care about the singing first and foremost but if your music is bad I dont care how good you sing. lol

You can have a voice like Whitney and have garbage music and there still is no legacy there. Although Janet might not be able to sell like she once did she does have alot of classics.I cant say the same for the female performers out now because Janet was not only a performer, she was an artist as well.

But your right dancing, staging, entertainment etc is secondary but in Janets case I feel her lyrics and music productions compensate for her voice. (I do realize alot of people cant get pass that which is understandable)

Now if all her music was bad I dont think I would be fan even if she was a good performer. I am mostly a fan of her Control- VR material specificially. Her 00's material for the majority is bland and I dont care for it at all.

Now I will agree with you there! You bring up some great points, and I can see the other side of it. I loved Whitney's voice, but most of her material, not so much. Personally, I liked her best singing gospel (outside of her first album). I didn't have her work except for the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack. There are other singers who can sing, but the songs they choose is beneath their ability. I can't ride with that combination either. I do understand everyone has their own taste and opinions on what's pleasing to them. wink

I liked Jan as an actress. I do think Janet is very attractive, and looks fabulous! lol She's photogenic, has a pretty face and great body. cool

Yes, she had. 50 to 70 %. Though in LA and LV she almost sold out. The theatres though were most sold out or close too. Also multiple nights.

^^ do you guys think she should continue doing UC&P type tours if she decides to tour again? According to poll star her number ones tour grossed 15 millon. I remember a website posted a picture inside one of the arenas she performing in during the rockwithu tour and the top balcony was full of empty seats. she hasn't tour much this past decade like the rolling stones, u2, madonna, bon jovi these acts are very consistent in touring which is why they have no problem selling out arenas/stadiums

Yeah,I think she should stick with small venues. The 'Rockwitu' Tour was a mess, with so many cancellations and unsold tickets.I don't think she wants to go through that again.

Ah... I don't quite agree with that, at least in the US. Look at her touring in the states with RN, Janet, VR and AFY. She played to just as many people as Madonna, U2 (at least on their Elevation Arena tour) and etc. She also played stadiums in Japan, South Africa and Australia. But ever since after AFY it's kinda like her level of popularity just evaporated.

@Happyperson

For the time being, yeah, I think theatres is a good way to go. You still can put on a great show there. It's better to play multiple nights in sold out theatre then getting depressed by playing to half filled arenas.

Two weeks later, a day before Jackson's twenty-seventh birthday, May 16, 1993, it became Jackson's sixth number one on the Hot 100, eleventh number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and ninth number one on the Hot Dance Club Play. The single is also Jackson's biggest hit on the Hot 100 Airplay, where it spent ten weeks at number one. This song is Jackson's most successful single in the U.S. to date. Internationally, it reached number one in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand; the top five in Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom; and the top ten in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, and Sweden. The song is to date the biggest selling single by a female artist in South Africa, spending 9 weeks at no.1.

"That's the Way Love Goes", the album's lead single entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number fourteen and peaked at number one. The single was certified gold by the RIAA on November 12, 1993. "That's the Way Love Goes" remained at number one for eight weeks—the most successful chart performance of any member of the Jackson family. The single earned a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song.

Australia ARIA 2× Platinum 140,000
Canada CRIA 3× Platinum 300,000
France SNEP Double Gold 200,000
Germany IFPI Gold 250,000
Japan RIAJ 2× Platinum 400,000
Netherlands NVPI Gold 50,000
New Zealand RIANZ Platinum 15,000
Norway IFPI Gold 15,000
Sweden IFPI Gold 50,000
Switzerland IFPI Gold 25,000
United Kingdom BPI 2× Platinum 600,000
United States RIAA 6× Platinum 6,000,000

These number stats for the janet. album put it at about 19.5 million units sold worldwide (according to Nielsen SoundScan, the album has sold 7,035,000 million copies in the United States since its release, which together with worldwide sales would put it at over 20 million). Janet's biggest selling albums have never even been re-certified, so there's no telling how much it's truly sold to date.

*side note:

janet. is also only one of seven albums—including Michael Jackson's Thriller (1982) and Bad (1987), Bruce Springsteen, Born in the U.S.A. (1984), George Michael's, Faith (1987), Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) and Katy Perry's, Teenage Dream (2010) to yield a minimum of six top ten hit singles on the Hot 100. The Jackson sibs are the only two artists to have two albums obtain this awesome achievement.

janet. also became one of only five albums in the history of the Billboard 200—along with Whitney Houston's Whitney (1987), Norah Jones's Feels Like Home (2004), Taylor Swift's Fearless (2008), and Susan Boyle's I Dreamed a Dream (2009)—to debut at number one and remain at the top of the chart for a minimum of six consecutive weeks.

I'm just sayin...

I love Janet but she has never had the same level of popularity as Madonna, U2 etc even during her peak.

It just makes me really sad sad Here is an artist who could sell out arenas like it was nothing and now she just does threatres.

For the time being, yeah, I think theatres is a good way to go. You still can put on a great show there. It's better to play multiple nights in sold out theatre then getting depressed by playing to half filled arenas.

yeah she was just as big as them in U.S. 1986-2001 I'm not sure globally though

Preach!! Not to mention her three #1 movies in a roll....

Still doesnt mean she was on the same level of popularity because when I think of Madonnas popularity, I think of MJ and Janet has never been on that massive global level. She by far was a big star but not on that level... I love Janet to but just saying lol

^^I wasn't talking global. Obviously in Europe she never was quite on that level... even though she wasn't doing too bad. I mean, she was playing arenas across Europe on 3 tours in almost 10 years.

lol People slay me acting as if Janet is only a local star. She is an international star. She has toured (arenas AND stadiums) and charted all over the world. She has fans all over the world. She still holds the record for the fastest sellout of the Tokyo Dome. There were rabid fans all outside waiting for her in London a few years ago at the "For Colored Girls" premiere held there. She is wildly popular in South Africa. Fans in South America wanted her to come there for the UCAP tour because it had been years since she played there--same with Australia. German fans in this video at the 1:50 to the 2:17 mark are going nuts over her...

Comparing her stats to other pop stars from the time of her domination (and yes, she did dominate from the mid-'80s to the early 2000s) is futile, because she is Janet Jackson. Her own stats speak for themselves.

Well, she's not... of course not, but when it comes to Europe, when it comes to album sales, especially ticket sales and the way the public sees her, she's never been on the level of Michael, Madonna, U2, Rolling Stones and so on. But then again, who is?
