Stevie Wonder - What to buy next?

I need your advise guys.

I've just started listening to the music of Stevie Wonder after purchasing "Songs in the key of Life", which for the record I think is awesome!

I've heard all the "hits" and now want to learn about how his music developed etc..

People recommend "Secret Life of Plants" but say it's a bit out there for newcomers.

Can you help?

Musically, Secret Life' is interesting, but if you buy the 70's albums preceding 'Songs In the Key Of Life', you'll emjoy the stuff that led up to it:

Talking Book 1972

Innervisions 1973

Music Of My Mind 1974

Fulfillingness' First Finale 1974
ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Music Of My Mind was 1972 before Talking Book, the first truly essential Stevie LP.

All being well he'll finally release a new album this year...

Whoops - thanks. (Strangely, Stevie's official site also mistakenly places Music Of My Mind after Talkng Book - at least in 1972 though!!)

Iwould not suggest "Secret Life Of Plants" as a next purchase. As has been stated "Music Of My MInd"
"Talking Book"
"Innervisions"
"Fulfillingness First Finale"
as well as "Hotter Than July"
I say get "Secret Life.." after those.

People aften dismiss 'Where I'm Coming From'. I always thought that's the first of the classic string of albums in the 70s.

4 some unknown reason on my "music of my mind" cd
it says 1974 but it was released in 1972 before
"Talking book".
I totally agree that these R the albums 2 get next.
After that U should get Where I´m coming from
from 1971.There U´ll find the beautiful I never dreamed U´d leave in summer.
Then U should get Hotter than July from 1980.
Journey through the secret life of plants
from 1979 is beautiful 2.
He did´nt do anything wrong in the 70´s.
All masterpiaces.

I half agree as it's half classic Stevie to me, just a little filler to be found. Beats anything he did in the 80s though (Hotter Than July aside), that decade saw such a blatant, sad decline compared to his 70s run. I actually think Jungle Fever and Conversation Peace showed some improvement, we await the next chapter...

Talking Book is as close to a perfect record as you are ever gonna get!

Conversation Peace was 1995 along with the Natural Wonder 2CD live set. It's been a long wait since his last LP but not that long... smile

Stevie's had hits, but let's not forget the single that started it all:
"Fingertips." That song's hot!

Everybody say yeah!!!

Get all of his 70s output...it's essential... with the exception of The Secret Life of Plants.
