I realized that my crazy rants boiled down to this statement. So, I decided today to listen to Jamie Lidell's new album (in stores today) on my own accord.
You know what? It fucking JAMS!!! And I can see how if you were trying to describe the style to someone, a person might say Prince-style funk, which I could hear much clearer on some LOUD speakers.
He is not sampling. These songs are original. His new album contains very tasteful sound choices in drum machines and synths, among other things.
His voice is nothing like Prince, but nothing like what I was saying earlier in the thread.
I think I finally appreciate Jamie Lidell's music as of today.
Sorry for being a rude cunt!! Cinny Cool, gonna pick it up today! | |

When he opened for Prince he was promoting Compass which I really wasn't feeling. It's just my taste, but his more credibl, experimental stuff isn't really for me. I like it when he does throwback Funk/Soul. | |

Part of this is me being most familiar with Compass. His new album is wayyyy more suited to my ears. | |

I was never a fan of Jamie's. If I was Prince, I'd probably diss his suit too. | |

Jamie Lidell is FREAKING AWESOME. And his new self-titled album is well worth grabbing.
In addition to being one badass musician, he's a geniunely nice guy. I saw him in Austin during the Compass tour in a small bar. Twin Shadow opened, he did a 2-hour set, then I hung out to see if he'd emerge, and he did. He went to the merchandise table where I got in line for about 30 minutes. I had my Multiply, Multiply Additions, Jim and Compass discs with me. Said hello to Jamie, told him that not only do I love his music, but my (then) 6-year-old son loves listening to all his albums too. He says, "You should have brought him with you." It was 1 am. He proceeded to sign all four discs and made each one out to my son, writing a short message to him on each CD cover, which I sat down and showed my son the next morning. Unreal - those discs are treasures now.
He's featured on pitchfork.com now - interesting read -

Of partciular interesting note is his recollection of listening to Prince growing up, particular Sign O The Times:
-----
When I was 16, I bought Funkadelic's Funkadelic strictly because of the cover. I didn't have a clue who Funkadelic were. I bought Sly and the Family Stone's Fresh for the same reason. I was listening to a lot of Prince at the time, too, and I was like, "Hang on a minute, there's something going on here." I took every song on Sign 'O' the Times and tried to play it on the guitar. The diversity blew me away. It's fun, it's stupid, it's original, it's playful-- but it's kind of serious, too. There's all that weird stuff about Prince where you're just like, "What is going on?" When I hear OutKast's "She Lives in My Lap" or Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools (Drank)", it all sounds like footnotes to "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker". Why was Sign 'O' the Times popular? That was a weird album. It's pretty dark, so minimal. In a way, it's a miracle that that shit was popular. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. sounds more like The Black Keys To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws. | |

Fan or not, Prince got no biz dissing most folks dress nowadays (back in da day when he was BAD AZZZ fo' sho! ). Jamie got it right when he said "and he was wearing a bloody yoga outfit". Prince hasn't worn anyting cutting edge or note-worthy in YEARSSSS. Thankfully he showed slight improvement at this year's Grammys.
But like Jamie said..."I still love him" | |

I can definitely hear the Prince influence carry on from past joints to this album. It's not always blatant wanna-be copycat stuff (thankfully), but in song phrasings, ad-libs, odd sounds that shouldn't make great melodies, but do anyway, and other not-in-your-face stuff like that. And sometimes it's easy to hear too. For example I definitely hear a touch of "Extralovable" in "Big Love".
And yes very Stevie . Pretty much agree with the rest, ESPECIALLY about "the album Timberlake wishes he could make" except I would replace or add to "doesn't have the talent", doesn't have the BALLS. [Edited 2/20/13 21:28pm] | |

I feel the same way, I know Jamie is a huge Prince fan but I don't hear it so much in his music as some people always claim.
Funny that you mention JT, because that was what I was thinking too: the new Jamie album sounds like something JT would (like) to come up with... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... | |
