Lady Day & The Infamous "Suicide" Song

Gloomy Sunday

The mythologies that surrounded this song are plenty, but even if you haven't previously read about the song and the terrible history behind it, listening to this woman reciting a musical suicide letter alone is enough to convince you that she drew her performance from an old pain.

Morbidity aside, its one of the most beautifully haunting piece of music ever written.

I watched an episode of Dark Matters about this song a few weeks ago and posted the songs on FB. No one listened or commented. sad That made me sad and suicidal. bawl

Gloomy Sunday aka The Hungarian Suicide Song was written by Rezso Seress and was so depressing that it was banned from the airwaves in the late 1930s.

Here is the original song.

Some more info...why is the song so depressing?

I like Billie's version much better! wink

I hadnt heard this before. It really is beautiful. And heavy. Was this song the inspiration for "Asleep" by The Smiths?

This is what you want...This is what you get.

Beautiful. Haunting. Heart-wrenching. Provocative -- which is what I love most about Billie Holiday.

Here is the original song.

I don't speak Hungarian but that is moving! Aside from the vocals, the PIANO is giving my soul chills.

Incredibly affecting.

"Manipulating us to feel depressed"? lol He make it seem so,,,,,,calculating.

Aside from that bullshit quote that caught me off guard, the rest is definitely interesting.

As much as my late father loved and adored Billie Holiday, this is a song he very, very, seldom played. He said it gave him chills, he stayed away from it.
