I like the remix with the Chili Peppers better than the album version. I have it on a picture disc.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
Mickey D thanks for remix! I still think the original is better . Ive always liked this song. Janets adlibs and some of the lyrics were kinda Ray Charles inspired. Like when she goes Hey Hey Hey thats what I say I thought that was so Ray Charles

Actually it's based on this song:

OMG. So it's practically a straight up cover? How the hell does it say Written by Janet Jackson then? She should be sued!

Wow! What a bummer. Since 20 years I'm loving that song and had no idea it was a cover. As for the songwriting, it does say Janet Jackson, Steve Cropper and Joe Shamwell and copyright 1967 and 1993. And all her songwriting is a couple of changed lines. That should have been pointed out on the CD.

I haven't got immediate access to my CDs, but at the time of my Jackson loony years I studied those album credits. My copy really does say Written by Janet Jackson! I know I have an early copy as Whoops Now was later added as a proper track instead of being hidden after it was a single. My version is still hidden.

I haven't looked at the credits in years either, but I believe it said it contained a sample from the original song. These are the writing credits for the song:

I have the original 2 CD version of the album that came in a book like cover and it has Janet, Steve, & Joe as songwriters. Jagger & Richards are only credited on the maxi single, which came out later. I wonder if it's like George Michael's Waiting For That Day which was originally credited only to George, but Mick & Keith sued and won. Later pressings had them added. But the Funky Drummer sample is still not credited and George released a VHS tape at the time where he demonstrated slowing down the Funky Drummer beat. Janet's earlier song Let's Wait Awhile is basically America's Daisy Jane with different lyrics, but Gerry Beckley who wrote Daisy Jane is not credited. On the Control album the songwriters are:
James Harris III
Terry Lewis
Janet Jackson
Melanie Andrews

I didn't know about this. Thanks for posting. I can definitely hear the similarities.

Yes! I also was under the impression that that song was the only one, besides Black Cat, where she had sole songwriting credit. But I checked my CD, the original one, and it mentions the writers I previously posted. Maybe that credit was on the single?

Yes, another huge disappointment... I found out about that one only a couple of months ago. There should be a law, that when a song is hugely based on another artists song, it should be mentioned in the booklet.

James Brown said in I'm Real "You better take my voice off your records til I'm paid in full".

As far as I know Black Cat is the only official song that she has written by herself.
She has a hidden track she has written by herself to.
This is kinda new to me as well. I did not know this was based off of another song.

Both Black Cat and What'll I Do are produced by Jellybean Johnson and Janet. In the case of the Johnny Daye song, I think it's kinda like Whitney Houston who remade a lot of songs, but they were singles that were little known or album tracks, so people think Whitney put them out first.

I have known about "Daisy Jane" for years. As a matter of fact, I remember laughing when "Let's Wait Awhile" came out, because I knew what she had done...

You guys are confusing this song with 'Whoops now'.
Janet has sole writing credits on ‘black cat’ and ‘whoops now’ - not ‘what'll I do’
I only learned a few months ago that 'what'll i do' was a fully-fledged cover was so disappointed.
