I've been in the bad habit of just listening to 60-80% of albums lately, so I can't actually remember which record was the last one I listened to throughout.

Actually, it might have been Prince's TGE last night.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I usually don't listen to albums start to finish, but I've been doing it a lot lately.

Most recently was Antony and the Johnsons, Swanlights, which I just finished.

Also, in the past 24 hours, I've listened to these in full:

Björk, Debut

くるり [Quruli], Team Rock
くるり [Quruli], The World Is Mine

Yoko Ono, Between My Head and the Sky

Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band

U2, Achtung Baby

I avoided watching "Searching for Sugar Man" when it passed through one of the local art houses, partly because we all have the tendency of exaggerating the ultimate quality of things that remain mostly unknown. I could believe he was too good to go totally uninvited, as I've seen countless stories that've walked this path, but could his music be so great that it could work as some sort of epically twisted real-life fairytale that spits in the face of what you thought you knew?

A week ago caught this streaming on one the many media services (VUDU) and immediately, as if punched in the face unexpectedly by some barroom brawl, fell for this one harder than a Grade 3 concussion.

As a hardcore album listener I'm well aware that it would seem much more authentic, much more intellectual to list one of his two studio albums as proof of my recognition of his obvious. But I'm not South African, where he sold some half million copies of his first, nor did I grow up cradled in its classic embrace, so I choose the soundtrack below for my latest mindfuck.

This to me is the type of pure, unadulterated, genius-level expression of soul we seldom meet. Collecting together just him in the early 70s is one of the greatest things I've yet encountered.

And the man, quite brilliant and wise he does come across, though he'd certainly deny it in person, lives at this very moment in the same dilapidated downtown Detroit locale he's called home for over 40 years.

Sixto Rodriguez, you deserve a bigger blanket.

I also saw the Sugar Man documentary recently and was extremely impressed with the music. I plan on getting those 70s Rodriguez records soon.

The Queen shows off some legit jazz chops in an enjoyable, tight set.

Loved this debut 3CD set by The Weeknd. You may not agree with a lot of the lyrics, but the orginality and passion blew me away.
