Refresher: MADONNA'S SUPERBOWL PERFORMANCE

whofarted Everyone seems to have forgot what they witnessed only one year ago.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...795W63n7mA

The best entrance ever.

A look/theme we haven't seen already from the performer.

Great pacing: A choice of only a few songs, not a medley of her entire catalog plus a reunion with The Breakfast Club.

The hits got a special remix just for the Superbowl.

Special guests who got their own camera time, and voices were amplified.

Stage filled with a large cast of different dancers, not projections of the same singer over and over.

Sport-appropriate spirit with marching drum band and cheerleaders.

Great use of the field space for original screen projection.

A backing choir.

The words "WORLD PEACE" in lights from above instead of the singer's profile doubled.

I mean, Madonna really pulled out all the stops. talk to the hand to anyone saying this spectacle was topped.

I still insist that she should have opened with "Holiday" instead of "Vogue" lol take it back to where it all began! And "Holiday" was a perfect song for the event, which many people treat as a holiday, anyway.

Best moments: "Give Me All Your Luvin" and "Like A Prayer" love

the stage and the visuals were amazing.I didn't want this show to end.

I've got ten good reasons why this performance was better than Sunday's. lol

"Holiday" would have been a great choice too, but at least "Vogue" was freshened up.

When I heard the same old album tracks being used on last Sunday's performance, not sped up, or anything added to them I thought whew lord I should make some more popcorn instead.

Madonna, Katy, Beyonce, Janet, Britney, MJ, Usher....

Where is the entertainment value in watching these "singers" with backup dancers doing the same moves even better?

I mean, pick up a guitar or something....give us something!

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I also suggested that the organizers of next year's Superbowl should try to pick a warmer time and location for a band to play next year, instead of saying "it's in Jersey and uhh it'll be too cold for halftime". I got criticism for THAT too.

This thread is more about everyone having amnesia this week comparing 2013's show to 2012 as if there is any chance in hell it could hold a candle.

^^ lol lol I'm sorry, who the hell are those people anyway?? I don't even recognize half of them. And you know actually some of them changed their mind after they saw Beyonce lol

I've seen Madonna in September last year and everything I should be complaining about her concert aside, one thing she delivered was energy. But she just didn't with the super bowl halftime show.
Fabulous entrance! Great use of visuals. Loved the entire gladiator-inspired Vogue segment.

The remix is pretty cool, I'd give her that.

Unfortunately Madonna herself has no stage presence whatsoever. Unrehearsed (if that was actually rehearsed, it's sad), awkward dance moves with C-listers? No thank you.

Lip-synching to Gimme All Ur Love. Really you're gonna make Nicki Minaj and MIA lip-synch too just so that you won't look bad alone? confused

A church choir, gee, haven't seen that before anywhere. Cee Lo sounded good.

Conclusion: She was not in control of the stage, it would've still been the same exact show without her. Everything around her actually saved the show.

I still think Yonce's was a lot better. wink

I agree with the OP.

I think both ladies are great, and Beyonce has more visceral talent, but something about Madonna's show just reads better.

Maybe it's the songs: almost every one is a monster.

But there's something to the pacing, it's less frenetic, and let's you take in more.

Beyonce's show felt spastic.

But all these super bowl halftimes need to be dialed down a notch. I can't take this much faux event excitement, where nothing surprising or organic happens.

One of the problems with Beyonce's show is....the songs felt like they were "chopped up" in pieces (if that makes any sense, lol). She would sing the opening lines of a song, then it began to sound like noise. Her setlist was awkward and unfocused.

This is one time when she should have played it safe and kept it simple....."Crazy In Love","Irreplaceable","Survivor" (with Destiny's Child) and a rousing finale of "Single Ladies".

Yes, I agree. Even though I knew most of B's songs, they all sounded like noise. Madonna's were more distinct as songs.

Cinny you are the bomb! This is exactly what I've been trying to tellpeople. Everyone is too far up Beyonce's ass right now. Madonna rocked it last year. I don't care what anyone says. Her entrance was on fire and I loved everything else. The costumes were awesome. Why can't people give her credit??

Madonna no question...

Although Madonna doesnt have much raw talent I dont think its fair to compare the mobility of a 54 year old to a 31 year old. Naturally, the 54 year old is going to a bit slower in terms of energy and I personally didnt think Beyonce was all high energy she exactly moved alot slower than usual to me and looked tired. Kelly was the highlight in my opinion.

Looking at Madonnas performance again (while I dont think its the best) comparing her performance to Beyonces... is almost comical because its no competition lol

Madge performance was more entertaining and spetacle

It was DIFFERENT/suprising and engaging.

Although there were different things going on, it was more cohesive in how it flowed.

She had costume changes and they looked nice. They also fit the theme of EACH of the songs

She incorporated a marching band

The staginging was visually entertaining and that was one hell of an entrance (I dont care what anybody says that was creative and I was not expecting that)

She had better song selections and her classics had a modern twist to them

LMFAO, Nikki and MIA all had their time to shine and camera time.

While she had visuals, it was apart of the staging and brought value to each performance and was not just random holograms.

I mean.. I am not even a big Madonna fan and can say she was better and I even think Madonnas performance was just "ok". Clearly whoever thinks B was better are her STANS aint no way in the world that 2003 BET awards performance was better razz

My opinion: Prince and MJ had the best half times. Janet, Diana, Tina etc are not to far behind them.

No, I like Bee but I wouldn't call myself a stan and I actually like *sometimes* Madonna. If I were to be considered a Beyonce stan, I might as well be called, what's worse than a stan, a stalker? of Prince's by now but I'm not that either..............I'm pretty.....sure....LOL

Anyways do you remember how overly hyped and everywhere LMFAO and Nicki Minaj were 2 years ago? Do you really think Madonna was giving them a chance to shine and that element actually made her show better than this year's show? You know, if Beyonce had brought out the Gangnam Style guy and J.Cole with her, people would've criticized her for inviting no-talent guests. Madonna needs to be called out for doing precisely that and people need to stop giving her excuses just because she's Madonna. You can't skip around with these random fools who don't even have anything to do with your previous work and constantly have the camera on them and some other circus clowns and call it your show, your performance.

Better song choices? Well Madonna has a stronger, broader catalogue than Bee, no question about that but I think Bee really tried her best with such little she has. Songs like Vogue and Like A Prayer are pop classics but she did throw in her horrible new single so I don't know. I'd personally have preferred something like 'Jump' or instead of 'Music' too.

She did invite a marching band (well, just a bunch of drummers really) but it didn't add much to the show. I mean Beyonce too had some sort of live music with Bibi Mcgill and her 2 second horn section segment. But meh they both had more than 90% of electronic, pre-recorded music instead of live music anyways.

If you're gonna lip-synch, at least you need to either out-dance the backup dancers or do something else to upstage the people around you to make the show yours. Madonna failed to do that and again, you can't just say we need to consider her age and she can be excused because trust me, only 5 months ago when I was at her show she managed to do that with lots of energy and it was almost a 2 hour show. (though the energy level wasn't exactly consistent from start to finish, so she decided to depend on some cheap shock tactics)

For the halftime show, she looked as if she was being more led by the dancers around her and my guess is that they probably tried to put everything together in a very short period of time and she didn't have enough time to rehearse it and make it really her own. Many times throughout the show she looked awkward and unstable, and that is not how she is usually, and let's be honest, you know there were even moments where we had to pray she didn't trip and fall because she looked like she was about to lol

So my standard is that, yes, bringing fancy new costumes and incorporating a new them&choreography into your song is all cool, but if you can't be on top of it, don't even try.

lol

I still stand by my opinion

Whoever thinks Beyonces performance was better is either a) a stan or b) smoking to much

shrug

Like I said, I dont even consider Madonnas performance as one of the TOP best half times because of how SHE performed specifically because I feel like anybody could have easily replaced her if you take the staging, dancers, visuals effects aside (but I feel the same way about Beyonce to)

With that being said, this is not about Madonna being better because shes Madonna and no one is making excuses for her individual performance (because your right THAT wasnt good). (although her age definitly should be taken into consideration to an extent, she was 54!!! )

Its just that her OVERALL show was simply more visually and musically entertaining (besides her new single) She added alot of new and different things to her performances that were creative and that kept the audience engaged. Although she herself wasnt at her best her overall spetacle WAS which is the point I am trying to make.

NO, I dont think it was the best but it was alot better than Beyonces boring half time. Same weave tossing, strunts and booty shaking.

The fact she added LMAO, Nikki and MIA is irrelevant because that has nothing to do with the overall quality of the show. Do you honestly think Madonna halftime performance is the most watched because people wanted to see Nikki and LMFAO??? eek

okay... lol

Besides Give Me All Your Lovin... Madonna had MUCH better song choices and the fact she has a better catalogue than Beyonce has nothing to do with that!! (stop making excuses for Beyonce, you know dag on well Madonna could have easily chosen all the songs off of Hard Candy which would have been BAD) Oh and Beyonce did mime as well.

You also left out Express Yourself which Madonna added a modern twist to razz

Beyonce should have kept Kelly and Michelle on the stage longer and did Say My Name or Bills Bills Bills ( I personally feel like she should have invited Le Toya and La Tavia out since they technically are the original/real members) but of course that wasnt happenin. It really didnt feel like a reunion and instead more like Kelly/Michelle were backup dancers for Beyonces unlike LMAO, Nikki, MIA, Cee Lo who were part of the performance/show.

Agree to disagree razz

One of the things I love about Madonna is she never repeats herself. She could have come out and done 'Vogue' the same way as it had been done before, but she changed it and gave it a new meaning.

As far as her not having stage presence, that's bull. I've seen her live 6 times and the air is electric when she comes on stage. Some people have it, some don't. Madonna DEFINITELY does.

it's because you're a fan and you follow for her work! When I first visited her show in 2012, I wanted to hear the original legendary songs and see the iconic performances, so I was left not impressed with this concert, as most people who have seen her show for the first time.hence the constant changes have "+" and "-" (as with any phenomenon, to be fair)

Madonna gave a good show, Beyonce sang live, but Prince, gave it all together.

a star-colleagues constantly praising and suck up. After the show with Beyonce many wrote that it was the best show in the history of the Super Bowl lol ... and so will every year ... hypocrites. razz

To me this performance highlights that Madonna needs big budgets, tons of dancers and gimmicks to hide the fact that she’s not much of a singer or dancer.

But she works her ass off to hide this and fool people into thinking she’s an amazing performer (entertainer is more suitable to describe her) – and I have to applaud her efforts to do so.

Haven’t watched Beyonce’s performance so can’t comment on which one was better, but I’m sure it was less imaginative then Madge’s spectacle.

This was not better than Beyoncé's and I'm fond of both artists.

Madonna's best parts were the beginning and the very end. The middle, with "Give Me All Your Luvin" fell right off and then the cavorting with LMFAO and Nicki and M.I.A. ruined what momentum the performance had built up in the first place. Plus she barely sang live. The concept and staging were great, but nearly everything else was lacking.

Beyoncé just sang, danced, and performed. No dramatic entrance or exit, no random guests, no big concept outside of herself and a completely female cast. It seemed like a statement and probably was.

There was something very 'Tina Turner' about it, and I just loved that.

The Madonna one was good. But, I prefer Beyonce's.
