What Really Happened to Sly and the Family Stone?
I have been listening to alot of Sly& Family Stone lately and man was Sly a GENIUS I grew up listening to them but just have recently been rediscovering their music and listening more to it. I knew they were important to music but just was unaware of the genius and perfectionist Sly really was. Its really sad what happened to him
Can anybody feel me in on how they declined as a group? I know Sly has had drug issues but what exactly happened with his label?
Why does Sly not own HIS OWN songs that HE WROTE AND ARRANGED Thats Krazy to me. He would not be in the situation that he is in if he owned his own music. And what are the other bandmates doing currently?

I started to check out Sly and the Family Stone more late last year. I can't get into them as much compared to other acts but great music though. I need to really listen again because I know i'm missing out.

I started checking them out in 2002 after hearing j5 cover them and what a big fan MJ was, though I didn't realize I'd heard Stand! already in the 90's, but on the Legend Continues tape. And then I came to realize I already knew Dance to the Music from hearing a bunch of oldies at grade school during our aerobics, and recognizing Family Affair cause of the sample in Janet's And On and On
I think there were money issues too along with the drugs, though I think I heard somewhere that MJ's owned some of his catalogue and gave him his rights. [Edited 2/8/13 21:29pm]

according to wax poetics he tried to kill larry graham...so there's that.. Fret not that you frighten or offend. Invite the world to dance and marvel at who joins.

Well he gave Little Richard his song rights back too, and the catalogue did merge with Sony in a 50/50 publishing deal and then all the drama started

DRUGS,Paranoia, & Guns.
But here's the story from Vanity Fair some years back. http://www.vanityfair.com.../sly200708 Also this. http://prince.org/msg/8/335517?&pg=1 Sky's manager Goldstein is being sued for defrauding him. That band was a hot mess, I've told this story how my brothers bought tickets to 9 different concerts and Family only showed 3 of them. That group self-imploded... ===== [Edited 2/9/13 8:02am]

Cocaine, ego, drugs, money, lawyers, beef (Sly vs. Larry) and just plain fucking craziness. And don't forget screwing over their own fans at concerts. It seems they were doomed from the start.

2 questions
what CD (s) has Hot Fun in the Summrtime
is the NY 1971 video uploaded anywhere

This is the official CD it was released on and I believe this is the only cd where the song is on.
This was a greatest hits album but "Hot Fun in the Summer Time" was one of three new songs on the album.
I looked on Wikipedia and they oddly dont have "Greatest Hits" as apart of their disography.
I dont know the answer to your second question. Was it a concert or show?

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPEN TO SLY. GOOGLE EPIC RECORDS, JERRY GOLDSTEIN AND CLIVE DAVIS. THESE ARE THE SNAKES IN THE GRASS THAT HELP BRING DOWN ONE OF THE GREATIST GROUPS IN THE BIZ.

Bobby Womack wrote about Sly in his book, and he did mention the drugs. It was very hard to follow what Sly was saying in his Unsung episode.

Deborah Santana used to date Sly and she mentions him in her book. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

That's why he had subtitles so you can read whatever he was mumbling. It's sad to see such a creative mind lose his soul and himself to the "world" like that knowing there was more he could've done. He peaked in 1974. He's never coming back.

drugs, ego, something in a hotel, no time to wax philosophically. just don't need them to reunite until they are ready. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Gotta love Sly's new, more 'hirsute' look for 2013. Lookin' bad my man.

Freddie Stone, Sly's brother and Family Stone guitarist, pictured in recent years. Now apparently a preacher.

Sly will be 69 years old March 15.
He looks like he had a hard life although he was very successful when he was young.
Do you guys think the Grammys or BET will ever give them a Lifetime achievement?
It just seems like he as well as Family Stone dont get enough credit.

Have to admit that's an interesting look. Freddie's been a preacher for a while by the way.
