Boring as hell. They so did not need an Unsung. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I was too preoccupied with the crazy weather of the night to be worried about an Unsung lol besides I wasn't really interested in this one anyways.

I thought it was a good Unsung. I watched it both times it came on. I was impressed by their dedication to their craft. The band lived together for years in the same house, and practiced for hours and hours each day. Every day they woke up, exercised, started their day, then got down to rehearsing. I liked Electricity, Freak A Zoid, Operator. They explained their sound effects on their songs, which were almost Troutman sounding. Too bad business matters broke them up, they had been together since their college days. The mom of the Calloway brothers was the reason, and the band no longer wanted her managing them. They felt it was a conflict of interest, and there were disputes over $. They voted her out, and the Calloway bros left the band after that. I preferred Midnight Star's songs over Calloway's I Want To Be Rich, which was too poppy for my taste. I never got into that song. The Calloway bro's produced songs for other acts, and so did some other members of Midnight Star. Anyway, they must have had a big budget for curl activator, because they rocked those jheri curls until the very end! They had some serious jheri curls, good Lawd!

^^This^^
I liked this episode though it was rather bland. Its good to see they were very dedicated to their craft. As we know practice makes perfect. I forgot about their hits, their music takes me back to my junior high school days. I remember their music being the soundtrack to the breakdancing craze of the 80s. I just loved 'Midas Touch' and 'Wet My Whistle' I forgot about those tracks.
The Calloway brothers very underrated songwriters.

I'm surprised that they never mentioned the JabbaWockeeZ taking their hit song, "Freak-A-Zoid" to a whole 'nother level

I was hoping this would be a good one, but it wasn't.
I was hoping for more information about what lead to their break up and about the financial issues.
There just seemed to be too many holes in their story.
Also, did they used to fight? Who butt heads with each other? That's the kind of stuff I want in this type of show.

I thought so too
No one was on drugs or homeless.
It was just a business dispute
Also notice, that two other band members helped co-wrote that song I Want To Be Rich

 I enjoyed it too. It made me pull out my Headlines album. But, I beleive even though money broke them up with the Calloways, their time was gonna run out anyway. There were too many people in the band to make money, the soundscape was changing and recoprd labels were not going to fund large band like that. I'm still impressed ad happy EWF stayed together and still do it. and Mint Condition.
I'm with you on The Calloway's songs- I never liked I Want To Be Rich or Sir Lancealot. But they did write a lot of hits for people that I like.

Just viewed the episode on the TV One site. It was okay. It seemed other than the situation with the Calloways' mother and money issues, there wasn't a really big drama. It just seems the Calloways just moved on and Midnight Star has done the same. That's just about it.

Unsung editors unfortunately chose to edit out the really good stuff that exposed the trickery of the Calloways (Reggie, his mom and his older brother). The show was too busy trying to make it all seem good. Reggie Calloway was actually fired, and Vincent left two weeks later in 1985. The tour that accompanied the HEADLINES album didn't even have them on board. They have been out of Midnight Star for 28 years. Reggie Calloway has major ego issues. If you notice when he went into record producing after his not being in Midnight Star, Natalie Cole, Levert and Gladys Knight & The Pips didn't call him back for more. The truth of the matter is, as a record producer he had some good moments, which is why he was elected by the other member of the band to be their producer, but he got that role twisted as if it were Diana Ross and The Supremes. He played trumpet and sometimes flute. Horns became out of fashion after the group's first three albums, so he and Vincent were sort of insignificant, He was never the voice or main player. The three lead singers of Midnight Star, Belinda Lipscomb, Melvin Gentry and Bo Watson have been thee since the band's inception. The group had to file legal action against the Calloway family over finances and the useage of the name and brand. To this day Reggie Calloway still tries to do live shows and do Midnight Star songs and sing them and represent it as Reggie Calloway and The Midnight Star allstars despite cease and desist legal orders. Many times since his dismissal he has begged to come back to the group. Until this TV ONE show, Midnight Star has had no dealings with Reggie Calloway until some were on joint conference calls set up by Radio One in promotions associated with the Unsung show. It will never work in any group when a mom is the manager, and a son is the group leader and another brother is a member and another brother joins the management team. The non-related folks are screwed from the get-go. Music Royalty in Motion

Now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks for bringing that up. I just knew something was fishy about that episode.

Now THAT'S WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT!!! I didn't know any of this info. I always wondered why Reggie and Vincent didn't do more producing and writing for other artists. Aside of the ones you mentioned, I remember the stuff he did with Teddy Pendergrass and that was it. Thanks for the REAL DEAL!

if any of those allegations were true, they ould have been included. as i recalled the holloways brothers left the band, they were not fired. they were writing all the hits, so what would be the point? as for their mananger that was settled out of court in the brothers favor considering the fact that they were using her home, eating her food, using up electricity, gas, phone. that shit wasn't free.

Their sound was only on a handful of recordings. Joy, Love Overboard and Casanova sound like triplets. [Edited 2/1/13 10:26am]

This is what i recall too. They grew weary of touring and wanted to write and produce although i'm sure the situation with mom manager was a factor too. As far as i know the Calloway brothers were never fired. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

If they were fired or they left, I just wish that it would have been covered like this in the episode. It was too "slick" and "smoothed" over for me. I KNOW there has to be some drama in a group of 9. They made it seem as if they didn't have any real issues. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Oh and by the way...if Midnight Star comes to your town to perform,go see them!! I have seen them twice in recent years and they still put on a thrilling show. You'll be on your feet, dancing and singing along through the entire performance. They come to PARTY,and will demand that you party too!

ok...and who told Reggie Calloway that he can sing anyway?

If they (The Calloways) had won the legal action, then they wouldn't have been forbidden to use the name "Midnight Star" duh! Trust there is so much that Unsung did not reveal. I know somebody that says Midnight Star is gonna have a f/k/a The Time moment and tell the real story on a You Tube video soon. Gloria Larson got hers back and then some. She received a management commission and deducted all of the things you mentioned (food, electricity, gas, phone, etc). The problem was the "and then some".

scriptgirl said: Boring as hell. They so did not need an Unsung. I agree with you 100%. They only made two songs that I cared for, Wet my whistle and Night Rider. I'M NOT SHOUTING, JEEZ!

I just watched this yesterday. Yes, it was most definitely boring. I'm glad they didn't break up due to drug or alchohol issues but still. This episode was a snoozefest.
Oh and that song "Calloway" had "I want to be rich"...always hated that song...ALWAYS. However, I have always "Midas Touch" by Midnight Star. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I said the same thing when they showed the clip of their new song (which was why they probably agreed to do this docu in the first place ) I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I thought the same. I also hated that "Rich" song. One of the first songs of real memory in my childhood. I'm trying to again block that song from my memory. Thanks a lot TV1.

That song "Want to be Rich" always sounded like an outtake from a McDonald's commercial to me. Everytime I hear it, I think of "McDowell's" from the movie "Coming to America". I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

It definitely sounds like it could've been played in that movie for sure. Remember during one early episode of "Family Matters" and Laura was singing it (off key) and Carl came out and said "no" twice to her?
