Her influence is SO underrated.

It really is and it used to piss me off so much. But I think it upsets me the older stuff is underrated more than current now though she still has some good current stuff. I was watching some of the Japan RN tour, and she looked so much happier and funkier than in the later tours, and less like a robot even if she's still good, there is just no comparison.
And you know how much I looooove mj, but sometimes I did cheer her on for kicking butt cause she's so fine, and when she's enjoying what she does, you forget everything else. It just sucks that she's not on mj or whitney's level in popularity though I think she came close to it in the 90's and after All For You and Superbowl, it's like she worked hard for nothing and is reduced to a boob. One time someone asked me if she's the one with the boob and I really wanted to slap them and asked them how old they are if that's all they know her for.
As for all the stuff I said about her last year, irrelevant. All the Jacksons have issues and I no longer want to get involved in their personal bullshit cause I wasn't there.
And is it just me or did Toure sound all weird going on about Janet's body like that? [Edited 2/2/13 23:05pm] [Edited 2/2/13 23:05pm]

I LOVE Janet (the artist)
My favorite material and works from her are her OLD creations specifically (Control- Velvet Rope) My favorite album is RN and I think that era is FLAWLESS. From the CD, to the performances, to the tour, to her look, etc EVERYTHING and your right none of her more current tours, albums etc touches that. I loved how she was more interactive with the crowd and deviated from her background dancers with RN but in her current tours she is more robotic and hardly interacts with the crowd
MJ will always be my favorite of all time but I really loved Janet growing up as well and their were definitly times where I listened to her more than MJ and vice versa. I guess it depended on my mood or what I was going through.
I think its very unfornate that THIS generation only knows her as MJ's little sister and because of her Super Bowl malfunction because she is so much MORE than that.
Its funny.... because she spent a LONG time trying to prove herself and to prove that she could be her own artist/celebrity outside of her family (AND SHE DID) but it seems unfornately today, she is what she strived to overcome... Janet JACKSON, MJs little sister.
Some of that is paritally not her faught and some of it is.
I just dont know what happened. I think regardless whether the SB occured she definitly peaked after All 4 U era. I just wished she continued to push to be artistic with her music instead of trying to stay relevant with the current pop scene which I think watered down her legacy a bit.
On the Jackson Family drama issue: You know my feelings on that THERE STILL THE SAME But I know how to seperate the artist from the person. I do not want to rehatch a old topic but I will just say that Janet is not perfect and what goes around comes around.
Toure, I dont pay that phooney no mind, its just lights, camera, action with him. He was probably reading a script

Yeah, personal matters are no longer my concern. She's still the janet I grew up on, and I'm capable of acting shitty myself at times I'll leave it at that
and yeah I've gone for periods without touching mj too and playing instead as well, like for a couple of years after BOTDF during Velvet Rope though finally overmissing him and anticipating Invincible. And I used to want to tape everything with her in those times, even during Nutty, All For You, Damita Jo, etc. and all the older stuff that aired, now I don't lose sleep if I miss another redundant interview, but back then there was no youtube and I would tape everything, want my hair like hers, etc. similar with MJ And though I got excited with her, with MJ I would just be so manic.
This generation is not going to get the same with today's females. Even if a lot are techinically better vocalists, IMO they are not carving a path as she did, they are just recycling what was already done. And there are also other females that did the Minneaopolis sound well like Janet around the 80's too, and they are also so amazing, and I find it sad that janet fans miss out on the likes of Jody Watley, Cherelle and even Terry Lewis's wife

I think I probably taped about the same amount of footage on Janet as I did with MJ but of course with MJ it was different
Well for one thing, these female singers today are not real artists. Janet was not just a singer, not just an entertainer, she was a ARTIST. She exactly contributed to her songwriting process, came up with ideas and incorporated alot of her personal experiences in her music. These singers today dont do that and instead just take what has already been done. They dont strive to push to be different from past legends/icons but instead oddly wish to be them
This generation teaches these singers to model roles and to model what has already been done instead of encouraging originality or to be themselves because its consequences to being yourself.
There are alot of things Janet fans miss out on in their Janet bubble

Yeah my janet collection is huge, and I was in the bubble for sometime too though before and after it, I was exposed to music that most of those young fans wouldn't know shit about. I also agree she was an artist. Although I would like to hear more music, I really don't think she should if she doesn't want to and if she doesn't enjoy it. If she just settles down with Wissam and does acting, I'm totally cool with it, and I am curious about more acting....and she owes us the SNL she cancelled I was really looking forward to that cause I felt that though I enjoyed the 2004 one, I would enjoy it better second time around.

janet will always be underrated b/c she is a black female the world will find fault before they will acknowledge all the great things she has contributed 2 the world of music, fashion, dance and acting.u can look at so many artist male and female and u can see hints and traces of things she has done.everybody harp on beyonce and she is a carbon copy of everything walking and nobody in this generation care 2 b real about that.u even got the first lady gushing on that dumb tart yet i move on and let it be known as the greatest.

Y'all know I'm loving this thread . With SB 2013 upon us (GO RAVENS!), it's hard not to mention how Janet's 2004 show will forevermore be compared to any female who ever performs at the halftime show. To me, she turned it out more than any female since (we'll see what Beyonce will do tonight--I'm sure she'll be great), tit or no tit. There's a reason Billboard recently ranked Janet's show as the #2 halftime performance of all time (right behind Prince).
"Janet was one of the first female pop icons that I could relate to ... She was so vibrant, she had so much energy. She still has power. I’ve seen her on stage, and she can stand there for 20 minutes and have the whole arena scream at her. You have to love Janet."--Rihanna

I think if she is not feeling the music thing anymore she should stop because I would not want her to continue to make mediocre music like she has over the past decade and mess her legacy up.
I exactly think going into acting would be a great transition for her and a good way to retire from the industry. I kinda think Janet has indirectly done that. Hopefully she releases some singles from time to time. I would like to see her collab with Jimmy and Terry one last time.

I'm anxious to see how she looks on Wednesday when she's honored at the amfaAR Fashion Week gala. She just flew in last night to NYC from Paris for the occasion. "Get up off that grey line"

She isn't underrated by the 29-42 y.o. age group.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well that is true
I just think her impact in the performing department goes a little un notice. Like at the Diva special last year, I think they should have devoted a section just for Janet just to talk about her innovative choregraphy.
ALL these female dancers out today model what she did and they dont even have half of her talent or athleticism doing it.
I dont know if its because her newer performances (x-factor, American Idol etc) are not as good as when she was in her prime or is it because she hasnt had any music lately.

Yeah she has become redundant and is performing older songs. I really think she's at a good age to resume acting again and has the looks for it and all.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And I also think her current performances are not as creative
Like I really wish she could have maybe dressed like how she was in the Nasty video, did some of the Nasty choregraphy when she performed Nasty on American Idol in 2010. Instead, she dressed in an all black hugged suit, with high heels, she looked nice but... I didnt think it was all that entertaining to be honest.
I really wish she go back to RN/Control Janet but I dont think thats going happen

Those two plus janet through some all for you if not all.
I think she tries to do it though and she's just not there anymore. Either do a different genre now or act. I know I keep saying that too, but SNL and more sitcom work would have been great. I'm glad she did the movies though I think TV work is better for her.

I worship Control and Rhythm Nation, which I place proudly alongside Prince's own work as great 80's funk. Minneapolis.
And then in 93, as Prince starts to ebb, Janet becomes THE THING. It was an awesome time to be a fan.
I miss the sense of fun. You wanted to dance, sing out loud, and just laugh.
Michael got less fun, Madonna got waaaaaay less fun, Prince forgot what fun was for a while there, and Janet too, just started trying too hard.
I don't know what happens when our pop stars turn 40, but things take a turn for the serious and the labored.

To each is own
Some of Janets, Prince, Madonna and especially MJs best works IS from the 90's
I had never seen those Janet MTV Icon ad's their funny
Its crazy because I remember watching it and taping it when I was little. MTV would run the Icon special on and on all the time on MTV after it premeired.
I LOVED Pinks, Mya and Usher's tributes the best. [Edited 2/5/13 17:39pm]

Know what? I loved her 90's look best in the 90's and early 00's with the hair, makeup and all though I also loved the RN style, but looking back at the overall style, they really, really gave her a hard time in the 80's with her weight and she didn't need that. It didn't stop either when she "lost it" in 93'. I once saw a pretty picture of her where it said "no more boots or baby fat, janet has grown up" and I thought about just how oppressive that statement is. It's like they didn't like janet before when she was the same person and beautiful and worthy of respect who was saying a lot for her young age.
Back to the music, I remember some of the MTV commercials for Icon too when I still had a satellite dish. I thought the bed one with I Get Lonely was silly. [Edited 2/6/13 5:12am]
