New Edition/New Kids Tour

How does it sound a New Edition-New Kids On The Block tour? Since NE is doing a 30th anniversary tour 2013 and NKOTB started retouring. BTW I saw NE EARLIER THIS YEAR. Was the show 1 hour or 2?
Working up a purple sweat.

I think it's a bad idea. The only reason I say that is because they appeal to two different audiences. The NKOTB and BSB pairing was a good idea to me...only because they appeal to the same generation.

It might work better if it was NE and The Jacksons or NE and Jodeci.

Unfortunately if they did do that I fear it would be a US only tour sad New Edition were never really big anywhere else after Ralph Tresvant's balls dropped.

The Jonzun Crew can be their opening act. razz

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Believe it or not, NKOTB tried to convince NE to tour with them a few years ago. But NE was not even unitied yet as the two factions Bell Biv Devoe & Heads of States were still touring apart at the time. So the Backstreet Boys (BSB) ended up touring with NKOTB instead.

Well, with NE heading into their 30th anniversary and NKOTB heading into their 25th anniversary of "Please Don't Go Girl", the opportunity to tour together next year could not be more perfect than it will be. So they need to take advantage of that ASAP. Think about it, the New Kids could open the show and then NE can close it and then, all 11 of them can come back out and perform "Full Service" as the finale of the concert.

"Candy girl" was released on an indie label in the US and UK. London released it in the UK (a label used for import artists without a major in the UK), and I guess it was just a surprise smash hit, doing better in the UK then the US, but their second album and 1st single, "cool it now", was on MCA, and for whatever reason (lack of promotion?), the single flopped in the UK and any momentum caused by the surprise success of "candy girl" unfortunately vanished....

...maybe if MCA's UK arm had promoted it better, it might of been a hit? Who knows but a missed opputunity by MCA...

I went to the NKOTBSB tour and rather than one group opening and the other closing, they switched off every couple of songs and then came together as a group of 9 for a few songs at the beginning, middle, and end of the show. The majority of people at the show were either firmly in NKOTB's camp (like myself) or strictly BSB fans, with little overlap, so the way they arranged it was very well done, keeping both fan bases engaged through the entirety of the show. If NKOTB opened for NE or vice versa, they'd run the risk of losing a large part of the audience halfway through the concert.

Well, they can't do like the NKOTBSB tour, the show will haveto be mainly about NE, that's why I say New Kids should open the show, then NE can close it, then all of them can come back out for the finale.

New Kids were way more popular mainstream wise than NE (who was mostly popular with the R&B audience), so it's possible that some of the New Kids fans may leave when they finish, if they open. It's would be like Van Halen opening for Kool & The Gang instead of the way it went. lol

Did any of them have dolls, bedsheets, lamps, lunch boxes, etc.? Bobby Brown had the most crossover success, but it's kind of forgotten today. BBD was 2nd, mainly the 1st album. Ralph and Johnny had less pop success. Their audience was still primarily black. NE as a group and as splinter acts still did not have the same level of success as NKOTB as a group. New Kids didn't have much radio success as solo acts though. So NE has them beat there.

It's like comparing Elvis Presley & Fats Domino. Sure Fats had some success, but his popularity was nowhere near Elvis', and still isn't.

As music, no. But in drawing an audience and selling tickets, yes. Michael Jackson's This Is It sold more tickets than The Jacksons' Unity Tour. U2 will draw a bigger audience than Herman's Hermits. So level of success does count for these things, not whether you like them.

I'm a hardcore New Kids fan lol and LOVE New Edition as much as them , but no way is New Kids a going to be the opener. New Kids do have a lot of respect for NE (as they should) and they would probably be a opener act just because of that. But overall I don't think many of the audience would want them to be the opening act and I say this because they were more successful than NE on a bigger scale in the mainstream. NE has more solo power though (and better material) so that may draw crowds but I think most would be there to see New Kids sadly for them. Their fanbases aren't the same even though there are rare ones that like both (like me).

But you have to understand, like I said before, this tour will be more about NE since 2013 will be their 30th anniversary and NKOTB will be celebrating 25 years since Please Don't Go Girl and don't forget, they do have a song together that can close the concert.

That's not relevant to ticket selling power. There's many acts than are older than that and are just playing the oldies circuit. NE has been touring as a group and as individual acts for years when New Kids were broken up. Often they were on package concerts like Tom Joyner, Essence Festival, or New Jack/old school tours. NE by themselves would not draw as big of an audience as New Kids, just like they didn't during both groups heyday. Maurice Starr created New Kids in the first place because NE fired him. Maurice figured that he could have more success with a white group than a black one and that's what happened, although New Kids first album didn't do much when it was originally released.

I recently read NKOTB's biography and according to them it actually didn't initially occur to Maurice to market their music to white audiences. They originally shopped their music exclusively to R&B stations, BET, etc and met with limited success. It wasn't until a pop station in Florida played Please Don't Go Girl by chance that things took off for them.

THIS TOUR WOULD NEVER HAPPEN BECAUSE NKOTB HAS TURNED DOWNED THIS IDEA FOUR TIMES ALREADY. NEW EDITION WOULD MOP THE FLOOR WITH THIS GROUP. BOBBY TOLD ME HIMSELF THAT IF ACCEPTED THEIR OFFER TO GO OUT ON THE ROAD, HE WOULD STOP DRINKING AND DRUGGING JUST TO PUT THESE DUDES IN THEIR PLACE. NEW EDITION WAS WAY MORE POPULAR THEN THESE DUDES IN THEIR DAY. THE OLD TUNES STILL GET WAY MORE AIRPLAY THEN THEIRS. PLEASE THIS IS A JOKE.

This is correct. But I don't get why they were so shocked that they had more success with the white crowd. I may have been one of the rare black ones at that time that really enjoyed them. lol They do have black fans but I do recall many black people being upset with them doing better than New Edition.

^^Please Don't Go Girl & Whatcha Gonna Do About It did get R&B airplay, and I remember seeing New Kids on Showtime At The Apollo. But pop radio went crazy over them, playing them constantly. They became so popular that their debut, which was little known originally, went multi-platinum. I remember they even had a call line. I don't recall the exact price, but I think it was $3.99 a minute.

No, they really just wouldn't have the draw for a WORLD tour as New Edition rarely had ANY success after 1985. They had a little blip in 1996 but truly no-one cared about them after that.
