Org Mixtape Project: paisleypark4: "Rainbow and the Regurgitated Sunshine"

[img:$uid]http://a4.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/129/61139af3d3a44967924c96ab1517a7ee/l.jpg[/img:$uid]

http://8tracks.com/isaiah-tolbert/rainbow-and-the-regurgitated-sunshine

Im very happy to be on the mixtape team this go around, thank you very much!

I came up with the title randomly. I wanted to have pic of someone eating some dusty grooves but didnt feel like drawing it! Saw a package of skittles and said...hey..rainbow teeth! So I thought I'd make a character out of it named Rainbow and his favorite tracks from the last couple months.

The mixtape I wanted to make had to be upbeat and funky, but still captures the warm or thoughtful tracks in the same time. I threw those more so in the middle of the mixtape to give it some feeling. Also wanted to highlight key artists who have great music out now even my pal Drezone here who has released a great album recently.

Hope you all enjoy!

1. "Didnt I Tell You We Were Gonna Funk You Up? (Pts. 1&2)" - me as Teaz Me

This track started in 2007 as just a drum track, but became a self jam session in my garage last summer. Pretty much kept it that way and I probably will add more by the time I put out another free EP of music. Made with a Korg Microkorg synth, MTV Generator sampler and my brother doing handclaps with me.

This song doesnt really have a theme...but the night before my hot neighbor came into my bedroom drunk and started touching me. He got scared after a while I think though. He is married with two kids however..mmmhmmmm. "..Why would you end it so quickly?" I ask.

2. Wreck - Romanthony

Romanthony actually sings two tunes on Daft Punk's "Discovery". Most notably on their hit track "One More Time". I went to a used record store and found his solo album by accident. Bought it right away. I LOVED this track...sound like some classic 90's house with some funk!!

3. Everything I Need - Melissa Ferrick

Accidentally syumbled upon this track on itunes. It was in my Genius list as a recommended listen. Reminded me of that nice Ani Difranco, Melissa Ethridge type sound. Love the lyrical arrangement and the message in this pop tune. Everything I need ..is right here in my hands.

4. Running - Jessie Ware

Overheard Jessie Ware's song Sweet Talk at a bar one time and hit her through Shazam. I listened to samples of the album..and WOAH. I was pretty blown away at the sensual / experimental funk-soul sound on her album. This track Running though just puts me in that dark slow jam mood. Love the male vocalist behind her in the track too. Apparently the drums and hi hats are based on The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker...

5. Go There - Lugo

Lugo is one of my favorite independant artists of all. Actually the song here does not show off his amazing voice as well as other tracks...but this jam right here always get me to dance hard! Love the chorus and the lyrics. Had a big crush on him too for a long time..mmm fine thick Puerto Rican papi.

"Come on / Go there / Everybody know that this is where / You can become all that you ran here for/ So Imma give it to you like I just don't really don't care"

"It's like the movement in your hip/ It's like Gladys when she found the pips..." yaaaas hunny.

6. Save Me - Wanda Davis

This track comes off the Twin Cities Lost Funk & Soul album released in November 2012. I saw that vinyl and RAN home with it...so many grooves I had to put two of them on this mixtape. I like her voice..the funky drums knock and Wanda asks if you think about her "SAVE MEH! Anybody!" Sing that song child.

7. Injun Joe - B.Slade

B.Slade is another favorite independant artist who put out some HOT FUNK these last couple years and very thoughful tracks. This song however is very unique. His vocal layering and throughful lyrics really makes me wonder what was his thought process into making this song.

The climax in the chorus still sends chills down my spine..like daym how did he scream like that? eek

In this song he is angry about what the Americans have done to the Native land and the way we treat it.

8. Long Nights Ago - Francis H

Back when mp3.com was still open in 2000 a site that highlighted independant artists..I ran across this artist named Francis H who had tunes he made in the 80s uploaded on the website. Boy did I fall in love with this track. It has alot of Minneapolis Funk and some complex drum programming. His skills were pretty top notch.

Once the site was down though and all music erased I never heard his tracks ever again...I wonder what happened to him...luckily I saved this and "Sexy Girl".

9. Comfort Me - DreZone

I met Dre through our Holy River chats when the org was still a baby! I always loved his voice and diverse tracks he put out. I made sure to ask him if I coupld put this fantastic track on my mixtape because it should be heard! Avail. on his new album Soliloquy 7

It's so dirty and sexy. The jam rocks hard and you can defenitley feel that he means business in this rocker! Comfort me alright Dre!

10. Thieves of the Funkhouse - Band Of Thieves

This is another track from Twin Cities Lost Funk & Soul. I was quite suprised at this track and must have ran the grooves out on this track because I must have replayed this song 'bout seventeen eleven times hunty.

A great closer and really shows just why I love funk music so much. THIEVES!!!! *horns* dancing jig

There's some nice, spacy, deep tracks on there....thanx 4 posting. This would be a good album to take on a roadtrip with friends or a loved one....

I think many P fans will appreciate the drum programming pretty much inspired by The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker in Running by Jesse Ware.

As to your track...good start, has a lot of potential, I feel it needs more of a structure and I think it would be good to add vocals more to the fore and more lyrics as it seems to lose direction a little after the opener. Think Andre Cymone style ballads, that vocal style would go well here, it's a good story so use it...BE BOLD in reflecting the emotion in your voice, just how Prince famously does.....makes me wanna go to the garage and jam wink

Oh and are those coloured teeth photoshopped or special paint? Looks cool. It's nice to see creativity on here.

Thanks for the feedback !! Yes I was told that and will be adding more to the track to make it stand out. I really appreciate the critique of my track because I cant imagine what it sounds like to the casual listener.

Yeah it was just some cheap photoshop color hues to add on the teeth. Thanks for listening smile

I really like the Jessie Ware song. She has a sexy voice, and I don't know...something about it is reminding me of the better slow jams to come out of the early 90s.

Ok, LOVE the title! lol biggrin

1 – Didn’t I tell you We Were Gonna Funk You up 1&2

shocked Damn, this is a freakin cool track. I haven’t bought an album or anything new in so long. This is a stark reminder that I NEED to get back into my love of looking for music. Some of these beats remind me of Old School Cameo or Loose ends, but only parts and for a second it feels like it is going old school but it keeps its new millennium groove.

This track is awesome clapping

2 – Wreck

Oh Wow, I love this transition. Takin us into a whole different vibe. clapping I love Romanthony. I only have one album and some singles so this is new to me smile

He is not that great a singer but he creates such great tracks! smile I always wonder how his music would sound with a great singer. Far as I can tell he is well regarded by most house fans.

3 – Everything I Need

Um, you really are shifting gears lol I love the simplicity of songs like this. Great message and no fanfare other than good ole fashioned music playin smile

4 – Running

I want to raid your music collection lol So strange because her voice is an odd mix of J-Lo and Paula Cole. At least that is what I hear. I love the sound of this song and wonder what a full album by this artist sounds like.

5 – Go There

I like that you are putting up big sounds. smile Not really fond of the singing/voice but love the music.

6 – Save Me

clapping This song is AWESOME biggrin Is this local talent as in Indy? I noticed the CD title, is it a complation of old stuff or is this current? If current, it is amazing because it has that old flavor. It’s from a record or is that a sound effect?

7 – Injun

Interesting Public Service Announcement lol I feel for the true Americans, I really do but the spoken parts kind of suck. The music is awesome though! biggrin

8 – Long Nites Ago

Awww….. This instantly reminded me of Mariah Carey lol Not fond of his voice but the music is fun smile

9 – Comfort Me

The DreZone… hmmm Why do I think this is an orger? lol This is from an official release? Oh yeah, he sounds like a black Valley girl lol Once again, the music is great.

10 – Thieves of the Funkhouse

Ok, you are trippin lol This track is AWESOME! I see it is from the same place as Save Me. It seems like you found a real gem with this CD. I want it smile

Ever heard of Lee Fields? This guy reminds me of his voice. This song is truly the ISHHH!!! clapping

While I think the weak point of this mix are the vocals ( I love singers) I think this mix is Musically amazing. Nothing, not even the vocals, would ever stop me from listening to this again and again biggrin

Once a mix is finished, 8tracks skips to the next mix. Wouldn’t you know the mix that follows yours is titled “Sexy”???!! biggrin

1. "Didnt I Tell You We Were Gonna Funk You Up? (Pts. 1&2)" - me as Teaz Me

Love the drums and 80's presets on this. Reminds me of producer Atlanta Zane Giles, who often put the drum programming really hard and high in the mix (great to beatbox to LOL) . The instrumental breakdown and "talk" is hot, otherwise it's too "heavy" for me LOL.

2. Wreck - Romanthony

OK, I don't go looking for newer music, mainly because I still have enough 80's/early 90's stuff to play, but despite the lovely intro, I don't like this. I can take some house in small doses, but I find this too repetitive. It has a nice, warm "analog" sound though, so thats cool. I would probably like Daft Punk etc.., if they didn't play them out at the time LOL. I liked their OST of "Tron Legacy" though, if that counts...

3 – Everything I Need

Nah, reminds me of the "Iam a bitch, Iam a lover" song. Definately 90's LOL. Sounds like some shit some "hip" advertiser would use. It's pleasant enough though LOL

4 – Running

Nope, too meandering for me. I know, Iam boring, but hey, this is only on a first listen bases, so it could get better on repeated listens. My tastes are also very vanalla and cheesy aswell LOL. Nice guitar though. An instrument sorely missing in pop/rnb today.

5 – Go There

This is cool. Reminds me of rapper Domino for some reason? Has that easy going mid 90's swagger going on. Iam probably way off though LOL.

6 – Save Me

Not a big fan of the voice. Too upfront, as are the funky drums. Very short too LOL. It's catchy though.

7 – Injun

Wow, after the spoken intro, the song starts kicking, and then counterpoints that with more talking LOL. A shame. Lots of songs about the native indian (check Narada Michael Walden's "Still strong", which is kinda cool), but as SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy said, the talking ruins it, and it never gets the momentum the chorus has. If the singer produced this, then he needs a proper producer LOL, as the potential is clearly there. Very interesting song though.

8 – Long Nites Ago

Hooray some pop LOL. Lovely song. I love upbeat shit like this. My fav so far. I love the breakdown and the synth that sounds like the accordion makes this stand out. Abit long, but I imagine this is only a demo. Shame a proper producer couldn't finish this properly. As you said, the drum programming is top notch.

9 – Comfort Me

Reminds me of Geoffrey Williams abit (again Iam sure Iam way off). Not a big fan of this sorta funk/rock. Great drums on this though, and the production is top notch, with lots of interesting sounds in the background, something that Prince is or was so good at doing. Obviously I know this song is Prince influenced, but to get the again the production is my favourite thing here, as is the synth breakdown. Again like Prince the producer, it is not expected which is cool.

10 – Thieves of the Funkhouse

Thought it was James Browns' brother at first LOL. Yes, Iam way out of my depth commenting on a song like this LOL. Not a big fan of this sorta funk. I don't like the horns and the song seems to go nowhere (I know, I only like verse-chorus-verse structure, but there you go LOL).

Very diverse mixtape. Fav songs are the 1st one (for the killer drums), no 7 "Injun" for the Trambition (though the talking lets it down), no. 8, as I love 80's pop music, whilst track 6 is so short and sweet and mixes in nicely, even if it's not the sort of thing I would ever usually play. Track 5 was cool too. All those tracks I just mentioned I would hear again.

Worst track? Track 3 probably LOL. Also the last track is so damn long LOL. Ugh.

Damn....Man, this is what radio is supposed to sound like! But, Y'know...what would they do with Funk???

Funkin' right out of the gate --really diggin' the vibe on your tune, and the Romanthony cut!! that's some gnat's ass-tight Prince-inspired Funk! Nice opening one-two punch!

My cousin just played me some Jessie Ware a few weeks ago--this is the third track I've checked out, and I like what I'm hearing...Nice Lugo cut, too!

...Like Wanda Davis's voice...

B.Slade ! Damn...That threw me off guard for a minute, but now I'm intrigued...I'll

have to lnvestigate further...Wild!!

Nice programming feel on the piece from Francis H...

Drezone is rockin'! actually, I remember his posts here on the org, every now and then--Niiice.....

Thieves of the Funkhouse--Groove!!--Man, what year was this? Sounds like classic Post-James party Funk/Soul!

Nice mix! when I hear stuff like this, I think that Funk is gonna be OK after all...

5. Go There - Lugo

Nice little jam boogie

6. Save Me - Wanda Davis

whofarted hmm hrmph omg barf

7. Injun Joe - B.Slade

See above and multply by 5 lol

8. Long Nights Ago - Francis H

It's an okay track. Don't know if I'd listen to it again. Vocals are absolutely horrible.

9. Comfort Me - DreZone

Not really funky but awesome nonetheless headbang

10. Thieves of the Funkhouse - Band Of Thieves

Meh. Not really feeling it. I do enjoy the horn part with the "oooh"

I really like Tracks 1, 2, and 4. 5 is a decent track too. All the rest are either okay songs I'll never listen to again or just absolutely horrible to me. Very interesting mix though smile

Your mix was upbeat and kept us moving while we cleaned the crib last weekend. Thanks!

Didn't I tell You We Were Gonna Funk You Up - I like the vibe and drum programming. Nice vocal vamp near the end. Would like to hear a finished version of this one! Nice work.

Running - This song is fucking great. Thanks for turning us on to this one! cool

Go THere - This is chill. Something about his delivery remind me of Kid Creole.

Save Me - This is fire!

B.Slade - The vocals are over-the-top crazy! I love this. The spoken parts bring the momentum down a little, but man; that chorus

Long Nights Ago- Reminds me of the summer of ’86 for some reason. Thats ok, I guess.

Comfort Me- This is a cool track. Its a little heavier than some of the other tracks that Dre Zone has posted on here, isnt it? And vocoder is a nice little headphone treat

Band of Theives - The real fucking deal. I love this one. fro music headbang
