That song "Want to be Rich" always sounded like an outtake from a McDonald's commercial to me. Everytime I hear it, I think of "McDowell's" from the movie "Coming to America".
It definitely sounds like it could've been played in that movie for sure. Remember during one early episode of "Family Matters" and Laura was singing it (off key) and Carl came out and said "no" twice to her?
Naw I don't remember that episode. But for them to include that corny song in that corny show was perfect. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince. |

It definitely fit. Now that you mentioned how corny that show was, "I Wanna Be Rich" could've easily had been their theme song! |

If they (The Calloways) had won the legal action, then they wouldn't have been forbidden to use the name "Midnight Star" duh! Trust there is so much that Unsung did not reveal. I know somebody that says Midnight Star is gonna have a f/k/a The Time moment and tell the real story on a You Tube video soon.
Gloria Larson got hers back and then some. She received a management commission and deducted all of the things you mentioned (food, electricity, gas, phone, etc). The problem was the "and then some".

I believe you responded to the wrong person. I'm not pretending to know anything about
the legal action they have been involved in. I'm just stating i don't recall the Calloways
being fired from the group. It always was stated even back in 86 they were ready to
move on and produce. Don't laugh at my funk

Weary of touring? Yeah right. Weary doesn't beg to get back in the group LOL.
Midnight Star's biggest songs, would probably on bear the writer credits on half of them by R. Calloway or V. Calloway, and they were never the singers on them, as matter of fact, Vincent Calloway did not even do the vocoder on all their songs that featured such.
Let Midnight Star be Midnight Star and The Calloways be The Calloways and move on. They have been apart fpr 28 years.

In a nutshell who cares really. They all contributed to the sound of Solar and Midnight Star. I saw Midnight Star last summer with their current outfit and I didn't come away disappointed. No need to turn this into a big pissing match. The Super Bowl is today. Don't laugh at my funk

For the song I Wanna Be Rich, Reggie Calloway, Vincent Calloway, Melvin Gentry & Belinda Lipscomb are listed as the writers. So two Midnight Star members must have made a mint off Calloway's only major hit after the brothers left the group. Plus there's another song off of Calloway's album, Sugar Free, that has another Midnight Star member, Bo Watson, as co-writer as well. |

so this song must be an earlier, unreleased Midnight Star song that the Calloways developed into their own debut single |

I thought it was a good Unsung. I watched it both times it came on. I was impressed by their dedication to their craft. The band lived together for years in the same house, and practiced for hours and hours each day. Every day they woke up, exercised, started their day, then got down to rehearsing.
I liked Electricity, Freak A Zoid, Operator. They explained their sound effects on their songs, which were almost Troutman sounding. Too bad business matters broke them up, they had been together since their college days. The mom of the Calloway brothers was the reason, and the band no longer wanted her managing them. They felt it was a conflict of interest, and there were disputes over $. They voted her out, and the Calloway bros left the band after that. I preferred Midnight Star's songs over Calloway's I Want To Be Rich, which was too poppy for my taste. I never got into that song. The Calloway bro's produced songs for other acts, and so did some other members of Midnight Star.
Anyway, they must have had a big budget for curl activator, because they rocked those jheri curls until the very end! They had some serious jheri curls, good Lawd!
in used to go see Midnight Starr when I was teen and they were at the height of their poularity. They put on excellent shows that the audience enjoyed immensely with r&b radio hit after hit back then....and lawd if they weren't some wet looking sons a guns with all that Jheri curl Juice flinging everywhere while they danced; I'm surprised nobody slipped and busted their ass onstage with all the curl juice flying between them
Haven't seen the episode yet but hopefully I can watch it online tomorrow.
That song of theirs, "(Play Another) Slow Jam" is still my cut after all these years |

I was hoping this would be a good one, but it wasn't.
I was hoping for more information about what lead to their break up and about the financial issues.
I also wanted to know a little more about their relationship with their label and if they still got royalities from their record sales. Also if Griffey and the Mom's handling of the money lead to the breakup.
There just seemed to be too many holes in their story.
Also, did they used to fight? Who butt heads with each other? That's the kind of stuff I want in this type of show.
There was no real drama.
"We lived in a house together in Kentucky, rehearsals everyday"
"We were writing hits"
There was no tragedy & w/out a tragedy the story drags sadly. This can't follow up w/ Isaac Hayes episode. I have to give this one a 4 out of 10. EPMD, should be funnier to see Erick Sermon and Parish go at it. Kangols are going to have chunks taken out of them. |

^^This^^
I liked this episode though it was rather bland. Its good to see they were very dedicated to their craft. As we know practice makes perfect. I forgot about their hits, their music takes me back to my junior high school days. I remember their music being the soundtrack to the breakdancing craze of the 80s. I just loved 'Midas Touch' and 'Wet My Whistle' I forgot about those tracks.
The Calloway brothers very underrated songwriters.
True, can't say they didn't put their all into it.
Yep, they definitely had jams for the poppers and breakers! Cuts for the school dances |

I thought so too
No one was on drugs or homeless.
It was just a business dispute
Also notice, that two other band members helped co-wrote that song I Want To Be Rich
[Edited 1/31/13 19:26pm]
Yeah, they don't have to be messy for me to like it. I liked Ray Parker Jr's, and Full Force's Unsungs and they didn't have all that either.
Hmmm, interesting

I enjoyed it too. It made me pull out my Headlines album. But, I beleive even though money broke them up with the Calloways, their time was gonna run out anyway. There were too many people in the band to make money, the soundscape was changing and recoprd labels were not going to fund large band like that. I'm still impressed ad happy EWF stayed together and still do it. and Mint Condition.
I'm with you on The Calloway's songs- I never liked I Want To Be Rich or Sir Lancealot. But they did write a lot of hits for people that I like.
Right, 9 members in there. A lot of slices in the pie! |
