I didn't really care for it, but I've got to give her credit for taking a risk and releasing an up tempo track.

Actually, I think it was a smart move on her part to record this type of a song. The type of traditional Pop/R&B that she usually records isn't going to sell nor will it get her much airtime on radio. With her last album "Funk This", people were coming to her concerts and she would ask the audience did they know she had a latest album out and everyone would look at each other in bewilderment because they were not aware. It got her a couple of Grammys but, for the most part, folks just didn't know it was out there.

"It's Not Over" is very different for her. It obviously is not geared towards her core audience. It's more of a contemporary dance/pop song, the type of song that Beyonce or Rhianna would record (minus the uplifting lyrics) which will more than likely get her some airtime, perhaps even in contemporary outlets and may gain her some younger fans. She says her new album, "I-Khan", will feature various genres. Hopefully, this will be the only song from that particular genre on there.biggrin

Kit, you know I'm usually on the same page as you, but this is Chaka fuckin' Khan, man lol shouldn't she be beyond expecting any head nods from younger audience and except the fact that her body of work speaks for itself?

Nah, its not a smart move. I mean hell, it won't sell ANYWAY regardless to whom she's catering to, she might as well do what she has always been wanting to do but couldn't while she was in a "major label".

We can't even get a release date for the single. biggrin Honestly, I'm not really expecting an album release until summer.

I'm not sure if she wrote this particular song but she did mention a while ago that she would be more involved in writing songs for her upcoming project. Chaka has only had couple of huge hits where she had a song-writing credits ("Sweet Thing" & "You Got the Love"). Both of those were in the 70's. All of her other #1 hits were written by other people. For a long time now, Chaka has been making most of her money off of touring. This chick has been touring non-stop pretty much since 1975. She'll be 60 years old on March 23 and has a grand-daughter she's raising. I can imagine the ole gal may be getting a little tired of touring so often and is looking to make some bread off of songwriting. If she writes songs that are selling, she won't have to spend as much time on the road.

SoulAlive

from a recent Chaka Khan interview (last month).....

"I'm working on a new project called I-Khan.I'm doing eight different genres of music. The first single we're getting ready to drop in January is "It's Not Over".It's sort of a dance track with very inspirational lyrics.I'm going to release songs over the entire period of 2013.And all of them are going to be inspirational, fundamentally, but they're going to be rock, world, funk, jazz, opera. With other iconic people as well. And some future icons".

Just what I was thinking. No 15 to 24 year olds are hardly interested in
Chaka doing this type of music. Funk This went by the wayside like a lot of
Old School artists new projects tend to do but Angel and For All Time got
pretty good airplay in my area.
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I Like It!! Nice uptempo tune with a positive message from a Living LEGEND. Chaka looks great and certainly seems like she's having a good time with her new projects.

She has always been my first favorite female singer. Look, as long as it's not trash musicwe have to support artists that are versatile in their craft. Chaka can sing Jazz (Echoes of an Era), R&B, Pop, Classical music and stand with the best.

ThankUPrince!

I like it. It's different than what I'm used to from Chaka but I like the vibe of it and considering the significant lack of uplifting "pop" music now-a-days, I think it really stands out. cool

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Disappointing, especially after Funk This. Just seems like bland dance/pop that any old singer could do. (Kind of reminds me of Cher's noughties dance/pop reincarnation with Believe, especially in the presentation here - but you'd expect Chaka to have a stronger musical personality to stamp on her work.) The previous album felt like it was distinctively Chaka, but with a contemporary vibe to it. Hopefully, there's better material on the album.

One could only hope. I wouldn't mind if ?uestlove did the whole production(ala Al Green's Lay It Down) how knows what fits his artists' voices, he might not be my cup of tea as a drummer, but he sure compensated that with his production, bring in the whole Roots bunch, I'm POSITIVE that will bring out the best in Chaka.

Why the hell not, bring in Jesse as love

About 3 or 4 years ago, she mentioned she was back in the studio with them. But, the album concept has changed several times since then so if she did record anything with them, I don't know if any of it will show up on the album she plans on releasing this year. She mentioned some collabs on the album but she's not offerring up any names.

It sounds like something that should be played, at the ending of a movie.

You really can't tell much about the song, with this live version. I would like to hear the studio version, with all parts being equal, before I really can say something. It might work great, in the clubs with a remix.

When has she been doing the same songs though? Every lead single she released for the past 30 years is different than the one before it. Weak shit ain't doesn't always equate with "out the box" IMO, because her past material already been out the box as far as I'm concerned.

This was my first time seeing this Youtube vid of Chaka's new Dance single and it's not half bad. Remix it and add heavy Bass and predominatelyWhite Clubs and Gay Clubs will play it. This was the first time in a long time where Chaka was singing in her upper-register with ease. Usually her wailing gets raspier the higher she goes up. Her Vocals were Smooth through out this live performance.

She's taking good care of her voice and she Looks and sounds good..

The problem I have with the Dancers is that they had on those "It's not over" shirts. That was over-kill. I understand the idea was to promote the new single but it just looked too weired for a benefit event...

She is obviously catering to GenY & Z here lol It will be interesting to see if this gets any play in the clubs. It sounds exactly like it would fit there. The studio version is likely to be more powerful in sound, I'm guessing. It's not bad but she could belch into a mic and I'd be crying for joy lol
