Good Rock N Roll Bassists

So as i got deeper into my bass playing last year(Get it... bass.. deeper... i'll be here all week foks kfc )i discovered the fact a lot of Rock basists don't seem to know what the hell they are doing half the time.

a lot of rock rifts most of the time are silly and solos? lol lol

Hell half the time in a ton of rock bands you can barely hear the bass!

So this thread is dedicated to Rock players who go behind the grind and play more than a few notes per song and get pretty creative once in awhile.

John Paul Jones

John Wetton

Tony Levin

Geddy Lee

Doug Wimbish

Billy Sheehan

Duff Mckagen

John Entwistle was arguably one of the first great rock bassists. He was certainly doing different things than most of his peers in the sixties. Also, he was a big influence on Lemmy. wink

You could usually count on Bruce Thomas for some interesting bass lines (Elvis Costello and the Attractions).

Peter Hook (New Order).

Today he may be sllightly overrated but Steve Harris did some great stuff with Iron Maiden.

I quite like a lot of what Alex James (Blur) does.

eek eek eek oh i am a meat head for not including John Entwistle!!!!

That guy played aggresively and kept up with Keith Moon like a beast!

Steve Harris and Lemmy are both kick ass bassists razz no matter what anyone say's.

But i guess i was kind of going for non metal acts but it seems unfair to count them out if i want the entire spectrum of rock.

I also recently discovered that as much as i adore Judas Priest... the musiciaship of the guitar, drums and singing is amazing but Ian Hill on bass leaves much to be desired.

I Remember learning Painkiller, Leather Rebel & Screaming For Vengence on bass thinking it was faster than i expected... no he is not even playing hair metal speed lol

It seem's funny that a band(Especially more on later releases) that is known for it's speed metal stuff has a slow bassist razz

Obviously this is a generalisation but I think that with many rock bands the least talented guy is given the bass. Drummers are often denigrated but in some rock music the bass is typically the least "important" instrument.

Yes! Always thought "Flesh For Fantasy" had a great groove to it.

Funny you should miss the Grandaddy of them all, Sir Paul McCartney!

Gotta have a blast of vintage Motorhead every once in a while. cool

I would personally add Billy Cox of Jimi Hendrix' Band of Gypsies & Experience. His work with Jimi, Buddy Miles and Mitch Mitchell (tho especially Buddy) is just awesome, propulsive funk rock.

Billy don't mess around with decoration or solos, he just lays down the all-important groove. Just check out any version of Who Knows or Machine Gun, he's always on the case.

While not really rock, I've long loved the playing of Aston 'Family Man' Barrett (with his brother, drummer Carly Barrett) on the classic Bob Marley and the Wailers album, especially Exodus.

It's hard to discuss bass playing imo without talking about the drummer as they should be meshed together in mutual listening and rhythm.

John Paul Jones was awesome.

I've often felt Paul McCartney and Gene Simmons were two bass players who have been consistently underappreciated.
