Oh ... my ... god!

I've been revisiting the early albums of Sly and the Family recently and have now reached the 'Stand!' era of 1969 and have been really digging their legendary performance at Woodstock in that year.

Here we have the blueprint for funk for the next 10 years. James Brown meets Stax and the black gospel quartet at the funkayest circus ever!

Their first album, 'A Whole New Thing' is a monstrously neglected '60s soul classic imo, one of the greatest debut albums of the '60s. Check it out

Sly had/ has the second funkyest voice of all time imo, after James Brown. But Sly has a unique gospel/ blues thing going on in there too.

We all know Sly's had his share of personal issues through the years, but he was a monster songwriter, groovemaker, producer and icon of his time. Most of the funk bands of the '70s owe their careers to Sly, not to mention his crossover appeal and timeless pop songs. His only true successor imo, though, has been Prince. No Family Stone = no Revolution.

If we can have Stevie Wonder (who is one of Sly's musical 'children') play at the White House, meet the President and get official recognition, the least that can be done is for Sly to have the same.

I can just see Sly now, drawing up on a massive Harley outside the gates of the White House, putting on his shades and mohawk wig and struttin' up the drive and into the Oval Office - 'So, you wanna take it higher, Mr President?'

The perfect present for Sly's 70th birthday this March.

lol yes, this pic was posted by the directors of the Coming Back For More documentary, they also deal with anything new by him too.

Plus, Sly is undeniable!

Sly and band were at another level. Influencing Jimi and Miles, not to mention anybody else with an ear.

What the Woodstock footage shows us very clearly is that when you feel the energy of that many people and (as a musician) you give it back and they return it, film can't contain what it is that is actually happening there.

It was like watching a lightning storm in a hurricane with a funk soundtrack.

Then again, words are just not enough...
