R.E.M- Automatic For The People

Was this a great album or what? i think this might possible be R.E.M best... or is it Murmur? i am always torn between the 2.

Hell here is the entire album

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

For me it depends on the mood, Automatic is really an amazing record, had great session players on it, worth every penny it took to record it, and it was a bigg $$. Monster is that great ROCK record, but honestly Hi FI is another classic for them, REM is much like U2 and Metallica where they had critical acclaim before commercial so some fans hate later stuff, with REM alot of their loyals hate anything after GREEN. Metallica obviously to metal heads the Black album was the sell out, and for u2 though Joshua is one of the best, loyals HATE them and worship the first few records only.

My favorite 1-2-3 punch of REM - "Out of Time", "Automatic For The People" and "Monster". Three fucking great albums in a row right there.

Although not my favorite by far, it is a great album. The understated last 2 songs on the album always get me.

I always had this weird projection on whatever the band was thinking, like: okay, we reeled you in with that slickly recorded 'Out of Time' - well, this is what we really do.

Although I usually rate "Document" #1 for its importance to me at the time, I gotta say "Automatic for the People" is probably their best album overall. It's powerful throughout. Very specific vibe. Really a beautiful record. I wish I had it on vinyl.

Toss in Hi-Fi and i will say its the one of the greatest 4 album runs ever...

Right up there with Billy Joel

The Stranger--52Nd Street---Glass Houses---Nylon Curtain (shit and thats leaving out An Innocent Man) so u can pretty much say 5 album run for Billy

I'm a fan of Green.

Then Out of Time.

Then Monster.

Automatic has grown on me, but I used to find it terribly meloncholy, especially since I was in Germany and it was cold as hell when I was listening to it.

Automatic for the People - my second favorite after Out of Time.
Early 90's was very successful for the group, two amazing albums in 2 years.
