To be honest, had it not been for an invitation, this is not a show I would normally attend.

You know going in that Klymaxx is not the band you've heard on the recordings (the WAR syndrome), that Jeffery Osborne will not be with L.T.D. and what "version" am I getting with the rest of these groups.

I was invited by Charlie Singleton and really wanted to talk to him about the line of guitars he's built and is trying to market.
Prior to Cameo's set, I got a picture with him and the...

...Spinner model. You can see his other designs here: http://hiphopera.biz/Guitars.html

I got there at the tail end of the S.O.S. Band set. My guess is that it was Mary Davis doing the vocals.

The band really sounded good especially their female drummer Crystal Martin.

While trying to locate some video clips on Crystal, come to find out there's another "S.O.S. Band" being booked led by guitarist Bruno Speight.

The group with Mary Davis has "The Real SOS Band" as their FB page. disbelief

As for the Ohio Players, there are no truly original members remaining.

Again the band sounded very good but the only person identified from the classic recordings was drummer James "Diamond" Williams.

Even with Cameo who still have Larry Blackmon, Tomi Jenkins and Charlie Singleton on board, there's another group running around called "The Cameo Family" led by former member Nathan Leftenant.

I found my self thinking at one point that I was listening to some very good "tribute" versions of the original groups.

Bottom line, the people there had a good time and that's all that really matters I guess.

Nice review.

One thing I don't get...

I missed the first two acts and walked in for the end of the Klymaxx set.

The band’s flamboyant lead singer hip thrusted and gyrated his way through a funky 40 minute set of tunes

...Why would Klymaxx have a male vocalist?

Btw, I talked with Ohio Player's bass player (Darwin Dortch) after the show.

He said there were two other "original" members along with Diamond.

LOL. I don't know if that's a pronoun mixup or what. Of course everyone knows Klymaxx is all women.

I did note your comment about Cameo having 3 original members so I will suggest he change that bit in the review. I think he was talking to people in the audience but should have verified that before saying it.

He also said Cameo was Larry Blackmon and a backup band. confused It looks like Cameo was the only band there with at least 75% of the band actually playing on or co-writing the hit records.
