So why isnt George Clinton considered one of the gods of music Seriously. This guy doesnt get the credit he's due.
If he wasnt for him the modern day hip hop, RandB, dance, and pop music wouldent be the same. Single handedly guided an army of talented muscians in Funkadelic-Parliament. From Prince to Rick James, Red Hot Chillie Peppers, Talking Heads, and billions more all copied his sound or sampled it. Was the first to really associate bassy tracks with the sexyness.
Seriously what the fuck?

George was more of a visonary than a musician, in fact he's not a musician at all. His talent was pulling the right folks/musicians together that can interpret the sounds he wanted to put down on tape. George Clinton would not be have made the noise he did if it weren't for:
Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Eddie Hazel,Garry Shider, Fred Wesley, Michael Hampton, Billy Bass Nelson, Bigfoot Brailey, Glen Goins, Junie Morrison, Boogie Mosson, DeWayne "Blackbyrd" McKnight, Tiki Fulwood

I thought he was..
I consider him the "King of Funk."

He does. Moreso than he probably deserves. A lot of the musicians in his employ created a lot of the music that he took credit for.
So you can siddown now please. "Climb in my fur."

Isnt that what a musician is? Able to put musical arrangements into a piece thought of in your head? lol
Just because he didnt have the technical skills to play the instruments doesnt make him any less of one. Classical muscians dont have the ability to play every instrument in an ochestra yet theyre able to dictate the sound and create a piece.

Cuz he's a man with a drug issue like most of us. Mothership connection was my shit last night . We gets up isn't For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Well the fact that he hasnt died yet from it and hasnt really gotten in the way of anything shows hes a pro drug user (whatever thats worth). Plus besides that thats his personal life and never seems to do anything with the music produced.
He really did transform modern music and as far as am concerned one of the most emulated men in modern music, or the father of modern sound. Its a shame I think he's going to have to die for people to realize it.

Him, Bernie Worrell, and Bootsy Collins in interview stated that they dont feel they get the credit they deserve for their contributions as a group.
Clinton is the first to always thank everyone in his group and the more talented members always thank Clinton for bringing them together and given them the foundation.
Bootsy (who is the most successful of the group) in particular always state that he just wanted to play and that Clinton was always the director. So yeah, thats slander.
Know your info. ; ) | |

That's a talent in it's self. He's also a songwriter, and so forth. PRINCE: Always and Forever

I always thought that what Geroge did was being a visionary, songwriter, and producer. Wasn't it his idea to go from doo-wop with the Parliaments to psychedelic with Funkadelic, since he couldn't use the "Parliaments" name at the time? Didn't he come up with the storyline ideas and characters (Dr. Funkenstein, Sir Nose, Starchild, etc) for both the Parliament AND Funkadelic albums? He's credited as a co-writer with various other bandmembers on most of the songs, and the producer on the albums.

Yep. George's genius relied on seeing what others didn't see. That's why I think he gets props for. If anything he doesn't get props as one of music's greatest songwriters/composers IMHO. I guess if you come up with the music or part of it, that makes you a musician so yeah. I sometimes think George's off-the-wall, larger-than-life persona makes him underrated musically. But as a "god of music", I think he's already there (Godfather of Funk).

Yes I think that happens to artists who are more visual(they have a certain image) and that's why some people don't take them seriously when it comes to their musical contribution. It's really a shame, but I still think George gets praise tho, but he should def get more praise for his songwriting skills and for being the great visionary that he was. He's probably the most respected man in the funk music genre. Apparently that's not enough for some of the fans.

Even President Obama will tell'ya George Clinton is The Godfather of Funk. So will Bill Clinton. He's appeared on so many TV shows and movies it aint even funny.
Now most people under the age of 30 and Non-black probably never heard of George...

I think it comes down to 2 things: Funk isn't as massively popular as rock, so artists like Hendrix, Jagger et al get more attention from the rock journos than Dr. Funkenstein. And maybe those journos don't really take him seriously because of nicknames like that. They rather ponder over Dylan's lyrics...

So its a "why doesnt he get as much white recognition?" rather than just recognition overall. Because he is recognized especially amongst blac folk/writers. "Climb in my fur."

He's the "High-Priest of Funk" or the untouchable one.

Very good point - i don't know. I can only guess it could be because many of his songs are drug related and slightly lewd. Also i suppose Funk is quite a niche area compared to other styles....god knows why - it's the best!!!!

A lot of rock music and rock musicians are drug related and lewd, too! And they get praised for it!
I've always considered George and all of P-Funk to be greats not just of Funk, but of music in general. They influenced both hip-hop and rock music.

^ Agreed but they are not always going on about it or showing themselves smoking shit on videos etc....most of his songs are quite openly about drugs and are a bit crude. It would probably be more acceptable /or add to his popularity if he had the looks of someone like Prince too. Maybe it's also because he doesn't take himself too seriously either, although that is no bad thing, Props to the man!
