A lot of people forget she had a hit with A House Is Not A Home first in 1964....like someone said earlier she was the big pop star before The Supremes and Aretha came on the scene...she was the first black female pop star....she surely has soul as well.I guess the black audiences didn't get with her like that because of Motown, Stax, and Atlantic..well heck,The Supremes lost a lot of black fan base as well.check her out singing with her sister DEE DEE Warwick(another underrated singer) at their church in the 80s..they tore it up...dionne has a gospel inspiration album she did in the late 60s with her family singing backup...she should be in the ROck and Roll Hall of Fame, even CLive Davis has been trying to get her in there...that's another topic, how do artists get inducted before artists that were out way before they were |

It's a crime she's not in it but maybe after Quincy Jones got in, there's hope for her.
As for anyone not listening to Dionne and Motown because it's not their forte (hey script ), well that's on you, but you're surely missing a lot being that one-sided.
But that's for another topic. It's all about Ms. Warwick. [Edited 1/21/13 8:43am] |

The main reason why she and Bacharach/David's teamed up in the first place was because I think she sang or interpret their songs the way they heard them in their heads. She basically was for a lack of a better word, their muse. The songs weren't easy songs to sing, the way they were arranged. In my opinion Ms. Warwick is the definitive singer for their material. Well apart of it anyways.
All the way on point!
They needed someone to interpret the songs they wrote.
These were songs that were written with very specific melodies that had to be sung with pitch-perfect accuracy.
They didn't need ad-libs all over the place. They didn't require a shouter, they needed a singer.
And I agree that she had the perfect voice for the material.

I agree 1,000%. She should at LEAST have a freaking nomination. I don't know if this is the case but I SUSPECT the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame committee/Powers that be is made up of Old White Men.
I hope that Dionne and many other Legendary Vocalists will get inducted while they're able to enjoy the Honor. |

Luther's Dionne covers weren't even released as singles. So in that sense Dionne definitely gets props.
That's an excellent point Timmy. When Warwick was hot she was hot. No she wasn't played on V103 (R&B/Soul) am but all you had to do is turn the dial to WLS and you heard Warwick on the hour ever hour, what more do some folks want'. Geeezzzz.
I'll say this...

Couldn't have put it any better.
I love her songs from that era, and I think she was the perfect voice for them. She sang with the song, rather than wailing over top of it, and that's something I always appreciate - and something that I think can be heard in country music, to tie back into another recent thread that was making the rounds here.

Never cared much for her per se`, but she is relevant. Her pop-tinged style was a songbook in music history. Some of her tunes have lasted forever and been covered by many. Music Royalty in Motion |
