Is this Bowie.org???

Why are so many people concerned about David Bowie's new release vs Prince's new singles???

I mean seriously who cares. David Bowie has his own way of doing things and so does Prince. Prince doesn't need to follow David's path in the music business. Prince is doing what he wants, so be patient and let the man play his silly games with you stans lol.

Perhaps because the notion of someone delivering beyond expectations - without hype, tricks or riddles - is such a novelty in our world.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Bowie did an ingenious thing about 15 years ago. He securitized his future royalties.

Basically, investors gave him something like $55 million up front and in return, they got all the royalties from his then-existing songs for the next XX years.

I have no idea what return the investors made, and to my knowledge Bowie was the only artist to do this.

I thought it was slick as owl poop, as long as Bowie could manage the $55 million well.

I agree 1,000,000%!!

David Bowie released his new single and forthcoming new album without any fanfare, hype, riddles, drama!! There was no promises, promises, promises and then not fullfilling them!! No remixes of crap(dare we say LayDown, guys???), no half-assed videos of rehearsals, no 3rdEyedGirl concepts which have now been stopped and no cease and desist letters regarding bootlegs of which Prince DID promise us that we would get!!!

Bowie has shocked the entire world with this new release, which is EXACTLY the way it should be!! Its been years and years since Prince has shocked the entire world with anything new, basically, because his new stuff is a crock load of shit!!!

Enough said!!!

My memory was pretty good!

Bowie Bonds are asset-backed securities of current and future revenues of the 25 albums (287 songs) that David Bowie recorded before 1990.

Issued in 1997, the bonds were bought for US$55 million by the Prudential Insurance Company of America.[1][2] The bonds paid an interest rate of 7.9% and had an average life of ten years,[3] a higher rate of return than a 10-year Treasury note (at the time, 6.37%).[2]Royalties from the 25 albums generated the cash flow that secured the bonds' interest payments.[4] Prudential also received guarantees from Bowie's label, EMI Records, which had recently signed a $30m deal with Bowie.[2]

By forfeiting ten years worth of royalties, David Bowie was able to receive a payment of US$55 million up front. Bowie used this income to buy songs owned by his former manager.[3] Bowie's combined catalog of albums covered by this agreement sold more than 1 million copies annually at the time of the agreement.[2]

The Bowie Bond issuance was perhaps the first instance of intellectual property rights securitization. The securitization of the collections of other artists, such as James Brown, Ashford & Simpson and the Isley Brothers, later followed. These Bonds are named Pullman Bonds after David Pullman, the banker who pushed the original Bowie deal.

In March 2004, Moody's Investors Service lowered the bonds from an A3 rating (the seventh highest rating) to Baa3, one notch above junk status. This downgrade was prompted by lower-than-expected revenue "due to weakness in sales for recorded music." A downgrade to an unnamed company that guarantees the issue was also cited as a reason for the downgrade.

The success of Apple's iTunes and other legal online music retailers has led to a renewed interest in Bowie and Pullman Bonds.[5] A 2011 offering by Goldman Sachs for SESAC bonds based on, among others, Bob Dylan & Neil Diamond, was delayed and ultimately canceled due to lack of investor interest.[6]

Because Prince & Bowie obviously share a lot of the same fans and because they're both releasing new stuff at the same time and those fans are excited about it and this is a place to talk about stuff like that...

It would be weirder if nobody compared what they were doing

No it is just the opportunity for usual haters to trash Prince. Prince releases some new music and all we got is Bowie is a genius and Prince is crap.

I saw an economics program recently that suggested that when Bowie created bonds based on his future securities he effectively invented the complicated ecomomic tool that has lead to the current worldwide economic crash ... thanks David!

I have to say - I was never a fan of Bowie. I have a respect for him (that i do not share for alot of other artists that I have no respect for etc ).

I was singing that damn song all day yesterday . It is simple and the way he released it - like others said - is so cool in my opinion .

The words are biting for a 66 yr old man ... i luv it !

Biting , yet optimistic too !

Well, I agree that it's too soon to be bashing Prince's release, since he really hasn't done anything except release one single--and that happened in 2012

But I think a lot of people agree that if Prince took a more conventional approach to marketing like Bowie did that it might be more successful. Prince is an unconventional guy, so he doesn't need unconventional packaging. Just the opposite, in fact. Bowie seems to understand this and he markets his extremely weird self very effectively.

And now you've created another Bowie vs Prince thread! lol

yeahthat

Maybe Prince's younger fans are not Bowie fans; deffinately the older ones often are.

Regarding Bowie what was the expectation? Everyone thought he had one foot in the grave and was never going to record again. Prince on the other hand can't go two years without a release without his fanbase spazzing out. One could argue that Bowie timed this announcement with his birthday for maximum effect which is just as much a trick or hype.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Wow, just heard a portion of the Bowie song....drab AS HELL!

Not that there's anything wrong with that....

We all know he doesn't hold a candle to Prince, right?

It's like comparing Bono to Prince.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

This is why I can't stand this site anymore. You got dumb motherfuckers posting about Bowie in the wrong forum. Plus apart from their eccentricities and love of androgyny (which is probably in the past for Bowie at least), how are they even comparable? That's a disrespect to them both.

Ur totally correct. However, no matter wat P does it is intresting haha. Somebody has to give PRINCE A REAL INTERVIEW and ask him wtf is up with the way he treats his fans. He's got an extremely vast fan base and his die hards like a good portion of us on the org are some of the best fans an artist could ever ask for. So why does he fuck with us? Or do we secretly wanna be fucked with. Besides Prince knows that no matter wat he releases people like me are gonna buy it. I just wish i never bought the Rock and Roll love affair ep man was that a waste of money. AND HOW COULD HE NOT HAVVE INCLUDED THE 3RDEYE GIRL REMIX IN THE E.P? thats where i have to get mad at ya Prince.

Because Prince does not give a fuck about his fans (it takes no rocket science to see that)... and since Prince is an outstanding musician (one of the best) his fans look past it.

If Prince was not as nearly as good as he is, I honestly dont think he would have as many fans and he really doesnt even have "a whole lot" as it is and has lost some because of his behavior. O well, I'll always be a fan of his music/talent despite his bizarre behavior towards his fans.
