The West Coast/AOR Pop Sound , 1975---1990

...

Just started thinking about Toto, Pages, Jay Graydon, David Foster, Steve Lukather , Lee Ritenour, Michael Omartian, Bill Champlin, David Pack, and all the session cats that gave rise to the mid-seventies' West Coast /AOR Pop sound (which eventually spread way beyond the West Coast) although some just say, "Yacht Rock", Lol...just felt like posting some tracks in tribute...feel free to add your own if ya want....

...

Lee Ritenour, w/ Eric Tagg -Dreamwalkin' (Along With Me)

Christopher Cross - Spinning

Marc Jordan - "Generalities"

Pages - "This Is For The Girls"

Ambrosia - "How Much I Feel"

Kenny Loggins - "Enter My Dream"

Toto - Lea

Gino Vanelli - I Just Wanna Stop

Al Jarreau - My Old Friend

Marilyn Scott - "I'll Be Lovin You"

...

Love those tunes.
Seems as if Lester Abrams would have had a much more noteworthy career.

Plus these two deeper tracks from Minute By Minute...

After The Love Is Gone (x3)

First the version most know by EW&F, then two versions by different combinations of the writers.
(David Foster, Bill Champlin & Jay Graydon)

...David Foster & Jay Graydon (Cool guitar from Graydon)

...Jay Graydon & Bill Champlin (Even cooler guitar from Graydon)

One of the quintessential West Coast Sound tunes.

Love those tracks, too!

Speaking of the Doobies, Patrick Simmons' solo album had some of that same feel...

Singer/Guitarist Sheree Brown's albums had the West Coast sound, too!

With guest session artists like Patrice Rushen, Abe Laboriel, Paul Jackson, Jr., Larry Williams, Caleb Quaye, Neil Stubenhaus, John Robinson, Ricky Lawson, Jerry Hey, Bill Reichenbach, Jim Horn, Russell Ferrante, Greg Phillinganes, Jim Gilstrap, etc.

A few weeks ago when I saw Allen Hinds play, he was using a keyboard player named Mark McMillen.

This guy was Bobby Caldwell's MD for many years.

He gave me his latest CD Keenyo and has definitely got the West Coast vibe happening...

Nice tunes! I can see why he was the Musical director for Bobby!

Just came across this tune, written by Bobby Caldwell, that Mark covers--actually, I like his treatment better than Bobby's original!

Mark McMillen - I Give In

BTW, I'm hoping I'll catch Allen Hinds live one day!

Cool tunes.

The Jay Graydon track swerves into something I meant to mention.

And that is the effect that the "WCS" guitarists had on the genre.

Being back east when most of this jumped off, I was accustomed to the guitar tones of Eric Gale, Steve Khan, Cornell Dupree, David Spinozza, John Tropea, etc.

Their sound was Jazz/R&B based.

There were probably others before them but these were some of the tracks that floored me.

Larry Carlton (solo and with The Crusaders)...

...Nite Crawler & Spiral

Robben Ford...

...There's No One Else

Steve Lukather (Toto)...

...I Won't Hold You Back

How were they getting that singing tone?

I went through a ton of crap fuzz boxes trying to pull that off. disbelief

Ndeed!!

BTW, I love both versions of Larry Carlton's Nite Crawler--solo and with the Crusaders!

Speaking of guitar, this Brothers Johnson tune always had the epitome of that laid-back West Coast feel to me, George Johnson and Lee Ritenour..and of course, Dave Grusin's whistling keyboards, and Q's production...

I saw Allen Hinds Tuesday night with another amazing keyboard player Jeff Babko and Jimmy Johnson on bass.

He told me he'll be doing something at NAMM with Buddy Ebsen's (Jed Clampett) daughter Kiki.

You've gotta get your butt to the West Coast bud!

Bringin' Jay Graydon up again, this made me realize that he played two of my favorite guitar breaks of the 70's:

Steely Dan's "Peg"

and Narada Michael Walden's track "Listen To Me" from (3:26 on...)
