I think he's back ripping off Michael Jackson, as in his Justified days, but now even more clearly. This song is very Off the Wall era. It's a good song, even though, I must say. I guess I should recognize him as a songwriter. Ripping off MJ may not be original, but who would write a song that sounds like Off the wall today? Not many.

There's nothing Off The Wall era about it at all. It sounds like some kind of song Janet would have recorded and rejected from All For You (and that's only half a half-decent album itself).

Something about this track sounds weak and it's not just Justin's voice. Hopefully this won't be indicative of the rest of the album but it probably is. neutral

Justin Timberlake Makes Historic Debut On Pop Songs Chart

by Gary Trust, N.Y. | January 21, 2013 2:15 EST
'Suit & Tie' scores the most first-week plays for a title at the format and the highest debut by a male. Taylor Swift, meanwhile, logs her second Pop Songs leader.
Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie," featuring Jay-Z, makes a record-setting debut on Billboard's Pop Songs chart, which measures mainstream top 40 radio airplay, as monitored by Nielsen BDS, soaring in at No. 14. The song arrives with the highest first-week plays total in the chart's 20-year history and marks the highest bow for a song by a male artist.

'Suit & Tie' Makes Hot 100 Debut, Bruno Mars Still No. 1

"Suit" logged 6,045 plays in the Jan. 14-20 tracking week, with spins on all 157 of the Pop Songs chart's reporters, pushing it past Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which opened (also at No. 14) with 4,602 plays the week of Feb. 26, 2011, for the highest debut-week plays sum on Pop Songs, which launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992. (The chart panel expanded from 141 to 157 reporters late last year.)

With its No. 14 arrival, "Suit" takes over as the highest-debuting song by a male artist in the Pop Songs chart's archives. It bests the No. 19 entrance of Jon Secada's "If You Go" the week of May 14, 1994. Among all acts, only Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" launched at a higher rank (No. 12, Aug. 14, 1993); "Suit" and "Born" now share the mark for the second-highest lift-off among all artists.

Aiding the fast start for "Suit," several Clear Channel Media and Entertainment-owned Pop Songs panelists gave it top-of-the-hour plays last Monday (Jan. 14), while CBS Radio reporters played it heavily on its first day and stations in the Cumulus chain added it to rotation.

Based on its first two days of airplay when the Billboard Hot 100 airplay/sales/streaming hybrid chart was tabulated on Wednesday (16), "Suit" debuted at No. 84. With a full week of airplay and sales, the song could vault into the Hot 100's top five when the chart is refreshed on Wednesday (23) this week. According to RCA Records, the song sold 310,078 downloads in its first week (ending Jan. 20) - however, official sales figures will be released on Wednesday morning by Nielsen SoundScan.

'Suit & Tie' Track Review | Where Has Justin Been? | '20/20' Worth The Wait?

"Over the years, we've come to expect the unexpected with Justin's music, which I think is fantastic," says Sharon Dastur, program director of Pop Songs panelist WHTZ New York. With its retro-soulful vibe, "'Suit & Tie' doesn't sound like anything else out in pop music right now and we can certainly use those kinds of songs. We welcome Justin back with open arms."

"Suit," the lead single from Timberlake's forthcoming third album, "The 20/20 Experience," concurrently roars onto the Rhythmic airplay chart at No. 14 and Adult Pop Songs at No. 22.

'KNEW' NO. 1: Timberlake doesn't have a lock on the week's airplay chart headlines, as Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble." lifts 3-1 on Pop Songs. The song marks her second leader on the list, following "Love Story," which topped the Feb. 28, 2009, tally.

As it tops Pop Songs, "Trouble" bounds 11-5 to become Swift's sixth top 10 on Adult Pop Songs and debuts at No. 29 on Adult Contemporary.

"Trouble" ranked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 last week with the chart's top Airplay Gainer award for a second consecutive week. It rose as high as No. 2 on the chart two weeks earlier.

Thats been his entire career razz

The song is okay, its catchy and he once again is imitating MJ.

This will probably be successful since Justin has been gone for a long time. I honestly dont really care for him really. This song sounds like his other songs and NOTHING like Off The Wall. I dont see how anybody can take his frontin seriously. His a phoney and he showed that perfectly with the SB incident.

Jay Z such a overrated rapper. Dont know how his songs even make it on the radio.

JT should have stuck with just ripping off Princes music. wink

You know, lol, as mean or shallow as that jab seems to be, that's exactly what Timbaland and Timberlake were after at the time. Having the fucking NPG as his touring band only confirmed it.

It sure brought on a lot of late 00's Prince biting, so I'm sure that's why Justin had to go a different route. He admitted he originally wanted to make a Coldplay-ish album, but Timbaland was like "nah you have an urban audience from Justified, don't switch it on 'em like that" but that's why his FS/LS interludes are more atmospheric.. that's the "Coldplay" vibe.

You mean biting Michael Jackson right? lol... The dancing, the stupid comparisons of being the new "king of pop" and doing those Off the wall/Thriller influenced tracks with Pharell Williams & Chad that made him so popular with urban audiences when he went solo. Timbo made him go the Prince route later on, but that guy has been copying MJ since his Disney days.... Still enjoy some of his music, but so highly overrated by the general public biggrin ... JT will never be MJ or Prince as much as he wants to, he just isnt talented enough. Mediocre at best, his producers are good tho.

I meant, by comparing it to Off the wall, that, more than Justified recalled Stevie and MJ, as Justin himself claimed, and Future sex would recall Prince and David Bowie, this new song sounds more like an ATTEMPT to sound like Off the wall, more clearly to me this time, because of the brass instruments ponctuations and small lines, the multilayered percussion that recalls Paulinho da Costa's work in Off the wall and Thriller and mainly the long falsetto runs. Even though all the instruments are emulated by computer. By no means I said it sounded as good as Off the wall. For me, Justified sounded more like the Neptunes themselves and Future sex sounded more like the creative chemestry Timbaland and Danja were having at the time.

Now, this new song, for these reasons, for me is more clear where he wants to go for: Off the wall. I know of course Off the wall and Thriller, along with many separate MJ singles, at least, are widely consired, among us Prince fans, among the music public in general, regardless of being MJ fans, as pop/rnb masterpieces. It is unlikely that this work will ever be surpassed, like happens to all genius' work. I was just saying it was an attempt to go for that sound. Louis Armstrong when he shone through in the mid-20s, had many imitators, but few would reach a personal relevant aesthetic for themselves following Louis' steps, like was the case for Bix Beiderbecke and Roy Eldridge. It doesn't mean that the goal of a certain genre or someone else's work imply that the new work is equally as good, nor that it will reach a new proper aesthetic of its own.
