I could care less about David Bowie's new album but I'd rather see multiple threads on him rather than these current bullshit so-called artists. Andy is a four letter word.

Prince can't help but notice the widespread attention/praise that Bowie's return has received. The outpouring of love has been remarkable. I wonder if it might spur him to try a little harder with his next project to reach a wider audience. He's got a competitive streak, to say the least. * * *

Yeah, you've expressed that opinion multiple times already. Your personal praise (or lack therof) is not what I'm referring to, however. It has been widely praised in the press and with critics, has been a massive success worldwide on iTunes, has caused big sales increases in his back catalog, and has been written about and talked about in the media and social networking pretty much non-stop. So yeah - widespread success and acclaim, and very deservedly so as it's utterly brilliant. * * *

I've been a Bowie fan for 15 years, and I love the albums he put out before the break, but I don't think this song is "brilliant".
I like the mood of it, sure, but there were songs on the previous albums that are similar to it stylistically, but are just better. To be honest, even some of the "lesser" songs on those albums, like "I Would Be Your Slave" or "The Loneliest Guy", sound better to my ears.

That's cool I'm personally blown away by it. To me, it's the perfect comeback. It starts slow, mournful, wistful memories of certain places and times of a different era. It slowly builds in intensity until it shifts - living for the moment - " as long as there's you... as long as there's me"... as long as there's fire. Its about looking back fondly and maybe with sadness, meloncholy, regret, bittersweet memories... but there is a certain defiance there. As Prince would say, "it ain't over". His vocal delivery is just perfect. Reflective and nostalgic during the early verses, and then intense and almost desperate. Yeah, it's the song of an old dude. He's 66. But then, like the video symbolizes, he walks away from the past and goes back to his regular life... the present, and the hope for the future. It really speaks to me - i think it's the perfect note for a comeback single. I've been playing it non-stop since it hit, and it just really grows with me with each listen.
I don't disagree that stylistically it could fit neatly either with Heathen or Reality, but it also has a vibe that takes me back to the Berlin period of Low through Lodger.
There's so much to see and hear in the song, and the video... it's just really touching to me. I love it. It's been a long time since something struck me this deeply. * * *

Oh. Yeah, it's touching. That's what it is, if you've been into Bowie for years.
I don't really hear the Berlin era on it to any greater extent to what I hear on "Heathen" or "Reality" (or on "Hours...", for that matter). It's there all right, but it was there on the previous albums as well. For some reason, there's something about it that also reminds me of "Buddha Of Suburbia", personally.
It's just a bit too sketchy for me to get really excited about it. What was interesting about Bowie in his 50s was that he seemed to gradually get a tighter grip on songwriting again (after pretty much losing it in the 1980s). This is more of a mood piece to me in the end.

Yes, I agree with you about how Heathen and Reality also have the same echoes of the Berlin period. I am a big fan of both of those albums, in particular "Heathen". Yeah I can hear echoes of "Buddha of Suburbia" as well.... and also "Thursday's Child" from the "Hours" LP. But it's also something very different.
I understand what you mean about "sketchy"... but I think that suits the song well. It's understated, and the meaning and feeling is conveyed in few words. It's about the mood, the swell of the music, the delivery, the defiance in the lyrics.
But isn't it just wonderful to have new Bowie music to be discussing and disecting?!?!?! It's just a huge thrill to have him back * * *

lol. the song isn't the best Bowie has ever done, but i sure think it's way better than RnR Love Affair, that song is just SO lame... I think Where Are We Now? is a simple, but beautiful track. ain't best song i've heard from him, sure not the best choice to as first single. but the new album will be mostly more up tempo and rock. there must be a good reason why he picked this one as first single. the lyrics are very personal, so might be the reason why... I think Lame is the best way to desribe RnR Love Affair
Re Bowie, It's a nice track, I've already got bored of it though.
It's hardly whett my appetite Then again, I still have some Bowie albums to listen to [Edited 1/11/13 10:46am]

Yeah. I agree that "RNR Love Affair" is best described as "lame". I don't want to be too negative about it, but that's how it just comes off to me. It just doesn't pick off and there's no real emotional content to it either. The stuff that Bowie did that could be described in same terms was the mid-80s stuff (eh, "Never Let Me Down", anyone?). "RNR Love Affair" is bad for many of the same reasons as that stuff.
Not to shit on those that actually like RNR, of course.

Actually this is a horrible statement.
First calling something "lame" and then suggesting that people have every right to like it despite that.

I agree. It doesn't pick off. It's too familiar.

It would be great if Prince had a competitive streak again, but I just don't think he's interested anymore."Rock & Roll Love Affair" is a lazy, forgettable track. It feels like he's just going through the motions these days, when he makes new music.

I actually think that it's a great, moody song that Bowie has put out.
It's interesting how bad his German is though.

Bowie's fans are arguing about this new tune. Just a few negative comments here. David, you were so handsome and talented once. What the hell happened? Also, I respect Tony Visconti immensely for his work with Bolan, Sparks, McCartney and the rest, but this is the blandest production I've heard in years! Tony, you can do better than this! ----- old bowie was buddhamind/ this bowie is boring mind. ----- As a person more interested in the content & context of music and song (and not some pathetic cunt obsessed with the individual who made it), I have to say this is tedious, miserable shit. But I expect you lot would happily munch on one of Mr Bowies own fresh turds given the chance.Weirdos! ----- another carnage of old trifles, we persecute ourselves while collecting antiques. ----- Nope, I'm not impressed.Neither is anyone else outside of the pretentious, arty, fan club circle jerk. ----- Its truly fucking rubbish isn't it. ----- Will people stop liking it just because its bowie... It's bloody awful..... Drab trash..... ----- Very dreary and depressing. (Cue a plethora of votes down because I have the audacity to proclaim I don't like it) ----- David Bowie never writes a real song anymore. This is just him improvising a melody atop fairly benign chords on piano. it's always so morose & quickly done. Ugh! ----- ONE BIG PILE OF DOG TURD THE END ----- david, go home U R DRUNK !!!wort song by David Bowie EVER !!! ----- how's the masturbation goin dude? Absolute shite if I'm to be honest ----- I've enjoyed most of Bowie's music in the past, but I find this bland & dreary.(Sorry David) ----- Buhhh.... Borring! ----- Come on David, you know you can do better than this. You said this was an album from all your styles, so when your album comes out it better like that because this song shouldn't be a single, this should like the last song you record when you are about to die. You are better than this ----- Utter shite.Retire. ----- Awful video and a bit of a depressing song. Sorry Bowie, I like your older roots, this... this is not you!

I posted these ones to show that there are haters in the Bowie's fans community exactly like here on the org.
you'd be surprised to read the arguments between fans. It's exactly like on this website. I thought that was interesting for all of us. That's it really. [Edited 1/12/13 15:08pm]

I think haters are in every fan community. i visit a lot of forums and i see it almost everywhere. at some sites it's worse than the others but it almost everywhere. everyone can have an option, but some people take it a bit too far imo. bit dramatic the way people act sometimes.

Bowie is a pimp! He gave me "Fame" and that song is pimpish to the 9th power. I respect how he embraced getting old. Most vain entertainers wouldn't dare allow a close -up on their faces, where the creases and imperfections are showing. I enjoyed the video, the somber atmosphere, simple lyrics and the way he sang the song. Glad he is back and look forward to hearing more of what he has to offer during this farewell to his fans.
