Good new interview w/ Tony Visconti in Rolling Stone:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/david-bowies-the-next-day-album-a-track-by-track-preview-20130115

I can't remember the last time I've been this excited for an album. The single is simply unbelievably good. Pure magic.

And how about this?!!!

Visconti claimed that there could be another Bowie album out soon after The Next Day, which is due out in the UK on March 11.

He said: ‘We recorded 29 titles. We have at least four finished songs that could start the next album,” says Tony Visconti happily.

‘If all goes well, we will be back in the studio by the end of the year. He’s back. Bowie has found out what he wants to do: he wants to make records. Nothing else.’

Yeah I saw that, and that is excellent news indeed. I do hope Bowie continues to record a few more records. I'm not really caught up on the touring aspect - - i've never been one to go to a lot of shows. The studio material is really what interests me. If he were to do a one-off show, i'm sure i'd buy the DVD. And if ever came to Washington, DC i'd be right there in line to get tickets. But if i had to choose between a tour and an album, i'd go w/ the album 100% of the time.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that the single cracked the UK Singles chart at #6, Bowie's first Top 10 in 20 years.

Bowie now has Top 10 UK singles in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2010s.

It's a shame that his last Top 40 hit in America is "Never Let Me Down" - it hit #27 back in 1987. Although most people hate that album, I've always rather liked this track. Of his pop songs, it's one of the nicest.

Bowie has never been nearly as big a presence on US pop radio and in the pop charts in the US as he has in the UK and Europe. It's a shame, really.

I still can't believe how unsuccessful some of his most well known work is in the U.S especially "Heroes"

So true. "Heroes" has to be considered one of the most iconic singles of the 70s that failed to make the US Top 40.

Yup. It was Top 10 in parts of Europe, had some success in the UK, but didn't even make the Top 100 in the US Singles charts. Of course now it's an instantly recognizable classic.

Funny how it's always hard to judge the success (or lack thereof) of an album project. That's why snap reviews - especially of an artist like Bowie, or Prince for that matter - are so tricky sometimes.

Bowie has had a lot more top 40 albums than top 40 singles in the US.

"Jump They Say" was Bowie's last top 10 UK hit???

Anyone else noticed how his new site is optimized for touchscreen and mobile devices?

At first I found it even a bit annoying to use on a desktop computer, but I suppose that's the "future" then. It looks clear and lean and not that bad at all. I'm a bit entertained how his site from the 1990s utilized the designs standards of that era and became almost unusable due to the small "stylish" fonts and confusing navigation system. Now he's had this done in as straightforward manner as possible with really big fonts. lol

Continuing my re-exploration of Bowie's vast back catalog.

I don't care what anybody says... "Tin Machine II" is a killer record, one of the most underrated of Bowie's career. It has some great material on it.

Not much of a fan of the Tin Machine years. Although what came after in the 90's was good, especially Outside

unbelievable really. because it's one of the most iconic bowie songs. but i think there are more good examples of songs that never had been a huge top 40, 100 or whatever hit but still are seen as a classic.

Aladdin Sane is my favorite Bowie album as well! Lady Grinning Soul is one of my favorite Bowie tracks of all time.

John I'm Only Dancing wasn't actually on it, though. it was a stand-alone single. I do believe it was included on some of the deluxe edition reissues, though.

Bowie must've loved it to. He recorded the regular single version, the "sax" version and then re-recorded it yet again later on in a more "Young Americans/Station to Station" type vibe with "John I'm Only Dancing (again)."

Great song indeed

Actually, I think that the singles of the album (Loving the Alien, Blue Jean) are stellar, and on today's configuration, we also get This is not America and Absolute Beginners as additions (the latter is one of the best Bowie songs ever IMO). But quite a lot of the rest is dreadful IMO. That version of "God only knows"... barf Well, God only knows what Bowie was thinking when he recorded that track with that arrangement.

I still need to get NLMD. boxed Again, the singles are fantastic IMO, especially the title track (which I really like a lot - one of Bowie's best efforts in melodic pop). According to some people's opinions on the album, the rest must sound like a cow fart if the album is really that bad overall. biggrin

oh yes, is that bad, that album is beyond redemption even if you added the slighty superior outtakes from that era, which are average anyway (When the Wind Blows, Julie, Too Dizzy, Girls)
