Could Madonna Have Pulled Off A Country Album?

[img:$uid]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/67/Madonna_-_Music_%28album%29.jpg[/img:$uid]

She got into a country-pop vibe with "Don't Tell Me" but the rest of Music was basically pop/electronica. Could she have pulled off going into an entirely different direction from the previous era (Ray Of Light) and recorded a mostly country-pop album?

Doubt it. Madonna relied on a smorgasbord type of mixture of different musical sounds. That's like asking her to do a full rock album or a full R&B album (she came close to the latter with Bedtime Stories).

Other than what she's wearing, I don't hear anything country about that song or any of Madonna's other music.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I Think she could pull of a country song or 2...

But Besides her clothes as Mickey mentioned Don't Tell Me doesn't sound like country lol

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

It sounds nothing like a country song means it doesn't sound like a country song. "Country pop" would be like some of Kenny Rogers 1980's songs. Just because there's an acoustic guitar doesn't make it country. If Don't Tell Me is country, then so is Destiny by The Jacksons, or Waiting For That Day by George Michael. It doesn't even sound like a Shania Twain song, and she's not really that country. Cotton Eyed Joe by Rednex is more country sounding than this and it has dance beats.

Madonna can do anything, but "Don't Tell Me" is not country-pop at all.

I think she could have gone the Shania route easily around the time of Ray Of Light or Music, but all she did was dress kinda hickish and perform beside bales of hay for campy effect. lol

It has country elements but it's a dance-pop record.

If she did, it would be so sarcastic and borderline on being satirical

I heard r&b/pop in dont tell me like secret, it could have been on bedtime stories. Also, another song that comes to mind is Janet's someone to call my lover. I never understood why it was called country like cause of the America guitar sample, it sounded like songs people like destinys child, kandi and other r&b and dance artists were doing, but with a different spin to an already existing style

If she did - it would probably sound like she is patronising the genre.

Lik she did with 'I'm breathless'

she did it: 99-03 country/folk with some electronic twists...

I Deserve It, American Pie, Gone, X-Static Process, Love Profussion, Don't Tell Me, I'm So Stupid, Intervention, etc

I don't think her voice is that well suited to country but she changed genres pretty skillfully.

Like Bowie doing a country album, it would have been weird and probably seemed a little forced. But could work with the right songs & producer.

I don't think Madonna could...

BUT, I bet Lady Gaga could!

("Born This Way" - the country version was actually pretty good.)

She's pretty good with other languages and accents (except for the British one) and during her Ray of Light tour(or whatever it was called) she imitated a country accent really well

that would make the difference, not just singing in regular voice,

but I would prefere more futuristic disco ie Confessions

If Big & Rich are the main producers for that country album, then maybe Madonna has a fair chance of making it work. But I don't know for sure if country fans from those red states are going to give her the benefit of the doubt.

They can put Cowboy Troy on a song or 2.
