Because he wrote songs on those albums.
When people start saying that someone has sold "X" million albums world wide, those types of numbers can be inflated to make them anything you want. I know R. has sold millions of albums, but 50 million is a pretty big number for an artist that has only had a marginal crossover success in the States.
Either way, it was a joke.
LOL @ marginal crossover success. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. R. Kelly had major crossover success for over a decade (1994 to 2007). If you knew anything about his singles and albums sales then you'd know that. 50+ million doesn't even include his singles sales.
Born into the 90's - 2 million
12 Play (1993) - 7.2 million
R. Kelly (1995) - 6.2 million
R. (1998) - 12.4 million
TP-2.COM (2000) - 6 million
The Best of Both Worlds (2002) - 1.7 million
Chocolate Factory (2003) - 5.1 million
The R. In R&B (2003) - 3.8 million
Happy People/U Saved Me (2004) - 5.2 million
Unfinished Business (2004) - 1.25 million
TP.3: Reloaded (2005) - 2 million
Remix City, Vol. 1 (2005) - 100,000
Double Up (2007) - 1.5 million
Untitled (2009) - 500,000
Do the math.
It's not about math in this case. Just because an album sold 2, 3 or 5 million copies in the 90s didn't mean it was a "crossover" success. Sure, he had "pop" hits, but no matter how you try to put it, he is not a pop artist and will never be.
If you ask the non-R&B fan to name an R. Kelly song, they will be limited in what they will list. Most of them will know "I Believe I Can Fly" and "Ignition (Remix)"...MAYBE "Bump N' Grind."
I OBVIOUSLY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
This type of math can be done with almost ANY artist/group. Hell, Metallica and other rock acts/groups crossed over to the pop charts as well, but they are not really crossover. Crossover appeal is totally different from crossover music.
Many acts claim to be in the 100,000,000 album club. Our beloved Prince is one. However, he claims that he has sold that amount worldwide (which I'm sure he has), but the question is if he is counting copies of Crystal Ball, N.E.W.S., TRC, TCI, THe Slaughterhouse, etc? Are they counting the albums that he wrote songs on (Celine Dion, Cyndi Lauper, etc.)? We don't know. A lot of those albums he sold were ones he sold himself and not through Soundscan.
Either way, I understand that you are a "die-hard" R. fan and that's cool. I would defend Prince to someone who made a JOKE about his music also.
