I know by so many org standards it's illegal to like a popular song.. and especially one that features Rihanna & Coldplay.

But fuck it!. This song rocks imo.

It is defintley Coldplay at their poppiest but i love the melody & overall mood of the song.

Some people made a stink about the video...

While it's defintley more of India, Thailand, and Japan per say than China.

Chris Martins character is from Japan i believe?, hence the Japanese images, and he has a thing for the Princess of China, hence all the Chinese images.

These countries used to be at war, hence the battles. Its forbidden love.

Or at least that is what i think i could just be over thinking it.

For me it has nothing to do with what's "in"...from the moment I heard Coldplay's first hit song years ago I hated Martin's voice. I just find it really unpleasant to listen to

I like it. Coldplay with a dance beat is more enjoyable to me than Coldplay without a dance beat. Good use of distorted synths to achieve that "oriental" feel too.

I think the video is intentionally mixing up different types of imagery from the Far East. I found it a bit (tragi-)comical when people got upset that it doesn't "portray Chinese culture faithfully". Quite clearly that's not been the intention as just about any and everything from the region has been thrown in there. It's probably done as a reference to the "orientalism" that has a long history in popular culture (using vaguely Asian themes in art just for the aesthetic appeal and nothing else).

Why would titling a pop song "Princess of China" mean that the video should portray China as it is?

Aren't they pretty much the most popular British rock band of the 00s?

I think the the mainstream music magazines always gave them pretty good reviews. When that "X&Y" album came out it was even considered some sort of an "event".

Yeah, I know some have called them "Radiohead for people without a sense of imagination" and things like that, but their fanbase seems to be pretty huge.

perhaps in the past but all i see nowadays is people saying Coldplay suck but never saying why.

Usually it has something to do with Chris Martin... idk what he did to people but peeps hate him

Really? hahaha... Well since I have roots in the carribean, I don't really think this way (there are similar artists like her). But I can understand where you're coming from.
