^^^ Indeed. Curtis Mayfield is probably my best discovery of 2012. The way I discovered his music couldn't be more random. I have a homeless dude who used to live near my apartment building (he changed his location since it got cold)and every time I walked by him he always sang "I'm your momma I'm your daddy" / "got a woman I love desperately, want to give her something better than meee" / "Got to be mellow y'all"....I just had to ask him what the hell he was talking about because it really creeped me out. He told me it was Curtis Mayfield and wow I was embarrassed that I didn't recognize that famous tune lol. So anyways I looked up the song and that's basically how I started listening to his music. lol I haven't listened to all his albums yet but so far my favorites are Sweet Exorcist, Roots, There's No Place like America Today and obviously, Super Fly soundtrack album. I love how he kept most his albums brief and songs are very subject-focused and cohesive. Really loving him as a songwriter as well...

Emancipation89

Oh and I forgot to mention when Prince came here 3 months ago for Welcome 2 Chicago, he paid a small tribute to Curtis by playing "We're a winner" with Shelby on vocals during one of the nights @ the after party at House of Blues. Think he yelled "Chicago! We're a winner! This is Curtis Mayfield!!" and the crowd went wild lol. Shelby J of course, as usual, sounded great biggrin

First heard curtis through the show the boondocks. If i wasn't watching tv at 3 in the morning i would have never ever have heard of curtis. Curtis was a genius but not only that a role model. He owned like all of his music,Composed his songs, wrote songs that were uplifting happy, ANd wrote music that told a story or enhanced it (just imagine youngblood priest and his story without curtis's music lol BORING). Curtis's music to me is the most whole music ive ever heard, u know like music that just is so complete with such an amazing singer, instrumentation, and message that u feel whole. this is a something that i don't even get with some of my favorite artists or only get rarely. Just listen to little Child running wild and wen theres maybe about a minute left in the song and the vocals have cut out and it's just u and music it is almost like curtis wants us to feel whole and reflect. U can't tell me that a Man like Prince didn't hear that one part and feel that way from it ever, Just look at songs on the gold expirience like SHHH, tmbgitw, and i hate u and listen to the endings of those songs and ull hear clare fischers curtis mayfieldesque genius. Love ya curtis, and for all the pain u endured in ur later years. u should know that u gave confort with ur music to millions of people such as myself.
