Did people think The Jets were black when they came out? Just curious, cause from what I can tell, black radio and audiences took to them pretty quick. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I remember them always saying they were from Tonga in interviews. It's pretty likely that some people who didn't know that assumed they were though. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

They must couldn't see too well.
Back then R&B radio played Falco, Culture Club, Hall & Oates, Wham!, Phil Collins, Miami Sound Machine, Sheena Easton and other acts who obviously weren't black. I do remember some people thinking Lisa Lisa was black though. I recall one girl calling her "the black Dolly Parton" after the Take Me Home video came out. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

No, they got the Debarges, Jacksons, Osmonds, and the rest beat. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. As I recall, the Jets' Polynesian background was always a big part of their marketing. It was received as a fairly novel thing on R&B radio back then. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I remember when they came out their first single I heard first was 'Curiosity' don't recall seeing their video for it right away but I thought they were another 'DeBarge' type of group. Then their second single 'Crush on You' seeing the video for that song I thought they were black but British.
