Has Homophobia Gotten Better or Worse In Hip-Hop?

I remember when Kanye came out supporting gay people few years ago and how some people in Hip-Hop fliped out.

How do you feel now in 2012 going into 2013 it is standing?

Jay-Z This year coming out in support of gay marriage, Frank Ocean coming out as bisexual. And getting to work with Kanye, Jay-Z, Pharell & becoming a Hip-Hop hook man.

I know it will never just totally go away. But i would like to think it has gotten a tiny bit better.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

man, you are really concerned about this problem. wink

you so often discussed this topic, it is tempting to certain thoughts smile

I think that musical artists (regardless of style) show the ratio of the society as a whole.
The more loyal attitude of the society, the more loyal artists display relevant to the issue in their work ... in the world no a lot revolutionaries and altruists, you know. lol

I can say that people in Eastern Europe are conservative in this matter, the artists are afraid to be numbered among the gays and guide countries promotes intolerance too.
to make it clear ... in Russia there is a law "prohibiting propaganda of homosexuality" .... so if you're an artist and simply calls tolerant attitude to gays, you may have a problem.

But this is off-topic, of course. I'm sorry. lol

It's definetly getting better, in addition to all the things you've mentioned, Nicki Minaj probably has the biggest gay following of any rapper in history. I think Eminem being less popular has something to do with this razz

Well those artists you mentioned isnt really a true reflection of Hip Hop, ya know? So it is not accurate to say that Hip Hop is more open to the gay community just because a few mainstream rappers spoke out on it.

Everything these celebrities say has a reason behind it. There not just saying it just to say it, 9 times out of 10.

You have to think about motives and thoughts as Lauryn Hill would say.

Jay Z is buddy buddy with Obama lol and is more than likely going to say things that are in his good graces or that models what Obama is trying to push. ( Jayz isnt hip hop nor does he represent the Hip Hop community and he says things that benefit him in this case his friendship with the president) Nikki has a gay following because of her image more than anything, Frank Ocean I cant really say because he really is not gay but bi sexual.

All I am saying is the mainsteam scene doesnt really depict what Hip Hop is really thinking and it doesnt speak for other rappers or MC's.

Jay Z is a mainstream rapper and that does not make him the poster child for Hip Hop, sorry NO. Maybe it does to people from the different persuasion but anybody that knows hip hop knows whatsup

Regardless of the case,

One person does not reflect the thinking of an ENTIRE community and personally I dont consider him to be hip hop in its truest sense, so no.

I don't know about the lyrical content of shit hop these days since I don't listen to it, but it has definitely been the most homophobic genre of music I've seen in the history of recorded music which is one of the reasons that I hate it with a passion, other than it also being the most boring genre in the history of music. I used to think country was the most homophobic but that genre just has a lot of homophic fans. I haven't heard many of it's artists spreading the hate through the lyrics.

I also don't remember all this bigtime homophobia in the black community when funk ruled the airwaves. I know it existed, but I rarely experienced it back then. But of course, when music is actually entertaining, people don't have time for a bunch of hate and bullshit because they're too busy having fun.

We've always partied harder than straight people but these days, the majority of the younger gay generation is just as dull as the straight world. They can't help it though because they've been raised on dull shit and haven't experienced better. lol

I think things are getting better overall but still lots of room for improvement. Obama made a lot of black people feel that it's okay if they are not homophobic.biggrin

That is a very sad reason if it really is true, as if Obama has sound moral judgment himself.

Any type of phobia is bigger than the genre that supposedly has the most of it to me. There's too many gay folks that have dug hip-hop for a long time in any form, I doubt they cared that much about what someone says unless they were brought up in a neighborhood to feel less than human for their preferences.

I honestly don't remember last time i talked about this lol

I work sound in the industry for a lot of projects(Nothing HUGE by any means lol)

But i hear dozens of stories from people about how so many rappers are down low. I used to not believe it, but i think a lot of homophobia in Hip-Hop comes from not understanding certain people & from self hate.

It does bug me that the values of being a man is trying ot hard ot act like a thug. And to make sure everything you say has no trace of ''no homo'' material.

I could whoop ass of most of these wanna wankstas & thus(Walkers, flakers whatever wannabes cal themselves these days lol] And i hate to say it but people take strong images from hip-hop.

When 50 cent came out with the i been shot 500 times stuff so many people in 7th grade talked about getting popped lol and they tried so hard to act hardcore.

Lil Wayne was another, afte rhe came out people said they were fucking bitches like Wayne & going to be a gangster like him(He was not a real gangster either rolleyes)

I do have a dream one day Hip-Hop will move on from songs about bitches, excess, hating homosexuals & acting like you are a real gangster(Rick Ross, Wayne. Waka Flacka are among the worst of the pretend fantasy gangstas)

I think rock music used to be WAY MORE homophobic back in the day. Rock used to be way worse with homophobia and excess, but i find rock and even metal(shocker i know lol) Have become a lot more accepting of other peoples life styles.

Country........ yeah

Anywho thanks for reading this long thing if you did lol

Well even with that said. Jay-Z has been huge in Hip-Hop and is still a huge brand name. So him saying that still had some impact wink

And it does suck some of my favorite Hip-Hop artists like Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, Masta Ace & Grandmaster Flash. Have all pretty much admited to being homophobic.

I will be honest i don't listen to the music. Cause i try to seperate the music from the men... another one that made me go DAMN was the singer for one of my favorite rock bands W.A.S.P. Has an interview saying how homosexuals are taking over the world & if a homosexual is killed he would feel no sorrow confused

Apparently Mr. Ross has pissed off some real gang-bangers.

Honestly I don't know why they're mad because Hip Hop in general promotes coonery and buffonery. I hate how people glorify being a "thug" like it's something to be proud of. But it's all about how you grew up and your experiences, but that' another thread lol.

As far as homophobia in Hip Hop, I think homosexuality in general is becoming for acceptable. If this were 20 years ago, Frank Ocean would NOT have come out. It would have ended his career, but in 2012 it helped propell his career. I know I wasn't the only one who didn't know who he was until he came out. lol Look at Luther (I know he isn't hip hop, but still), dude was in a glass closet his whole life. Everybody knew it, but he never confirmed it.

A LOT of these rappers are DL, and that's all imma say about that.

It hasn't changed, and neither has the fanbase. Nicki isn't considered true hip hop, Jay-Z can say whatever he wants, Kanye got "gay fished" on South Park, and Frank Ocean is a fuckin' singer from an offensive crew. This does not make gay people feel any better than before about listening to hip hop or attending hip hop events (unless it never bothered them in the first place).

By far the most homophobic genre is Dancehall. Many anthems about killing explicitly gay or feminine individuals, how they would be killed, making a fun dance hook out of it, and they are hits, and no one apologizes. I find it actually frightening, and I love hip hop.
