All the other versions are unnecessary,imo.My favorite version of the song is Eric Maritenthal featuring my girl Vesta Williams.

Because only a woman would be obsessed over a former lover?
Aretha changed the whole meaning of the song when she recorded her version (and the other 2 ladies are covering her take). She did the same thing with "Respect" — Otis was the one asking for it; Re-Re was clearly demanding it. While I prefer that change, I don't think it's as appropriate here. The singer is going to stalk his/her former lover until the ex decides to come back. This is a sad song, but Stevie's version is the only one that conveys that sentiment. While he sounds lovelorn, the ladies sound happily resolute bordering on creepy. The latter is certainly a valid interpretation, but not one I prefer. Aretha's vocal prowess makes it work anyway and she turns in a supreme vocal performance, but young Stevie does the same and his take makes the most sense to me. The Motown '60s-style production also helps in this case.
Oh well, happy to be in the minority...

I prefer Luther's cover of A House is not Home over Dionne's doesn't mean that song is better suited for a man. I actually didn't take it that seriously. I knew I should've included the wink emoticon. I was just shocked that a song about heartbreak and unrequited love (about as universal a theme as there is) could be considered gender specific. Although, I am not a fan of Stevie's version, his placed an interesting spin on the subject. It was kinda like, TLC's version of Prince's, "If I Was Your Girlfriend". Aretha's version does it for me...i will say that I did enjoy the both of them perfoming on Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards back in 2005..they sounded great together!!!! | |
