R.I.P. BET rose 1980-2000

I used to love "Out The Box". When "Voodoo" dropped they did a whole episode w/ interviews and played a lot of D's vids. I have it on VHS somewhere.

What was the name of the show that Rachel used to host? Was it "Planet Groove"? That was a cool show too. Many of the mid to late 90's artists would play live on there. BET (last weekend) had a new Comic View marathon with Kevin Hart. Hopefully they'll keep that on.

It seems when BET gets new programming directors in, they're out the door before they can even get started. It seems all you see on there are hip hop vids 24/7 and award/honor shows every month.

Cita's World was funny. but was basically a animated stereotype.

BET was still cool around 2001-2002. Cita's World and Hits from the Street were cool.

I think it hit it's low around 2004 when Uncut was at it's peak. They had some terrible shows, one was College Hill. They gpt rid of Cita, Hits, Comic View and Rap City around this time.

A Sample:

Now I'm not saying it's perfect, but this is just a small sample of what they talk about on "Don't Sleep", and honestly, it's only been on a little over 2 months. "The Daily Show" isn't the same show it started out being. Like the article said, if the network wants to foster good will with a progressive black audience then it'll have to be a little altruistic in it's approach and work at a loss for a half hour a day. The show isn't bad and can only get better. The election night episode was up there with any other political show on the air.

Like I was saying, the show does have potential and TJ is a seasoned journalist. I am wondering if BET is really going to give it a serious chance though. Fingers crossed.

Yeah the moment BET thought it was cool to do reality shows was when I got really tired of BET and then as you said getting rid of all those shows. They hurt a lot of its audience so much that anything they attempt to bring its programming back up are almost doomed to fail. But maybe that's just the pessimist in me.

True. I've been sticking with the old comics myself. The new generation fails.

I don't know about new black comics, but Louis CK is uncomfortably hilarious!

Kevin Hart isn't really funny, but he's not a bad comedic actor.

I like Kevin Hart, but I would take a B-Level comic from back in the day over him. It's not rrally his fault though. When your main stand up comedy competition is Lil Duval, than you don't really have much to reach for.

Always liked Joe Torry

Kevin Hart is the kind of actor that is good for funny cameos in movies. He is not a stand up comedian and to me if you are not a good stand up comedian, your not a real comedian.

Alot of people my age loveeee him. Ive always thought he was overrated. I did think he was funny in Soul Plane but thats about it. lol

I love comedians like, Eddie Murphy, Bernie Mac, Paul Mooney, etc

white corportate racism killed hip hop, just like it killed bet. wall street and madison ave have already decided that bet will never be a network of substance. that is why bet has no bis sponsorship underwriting any of their shows and madison ave will not invest the money neccessary to make bet a better network. a strong black culture is a threat to white culture.

I do think the show has potential...people need to give it a chance. The 11 PM time slot is tough though...Wasn't that the time slot they gave to the now cancelled Monique late night show?

This past episode they had Gabby Douglas as a 1 on 1 guest but I had to laugh as ex "real housewife" Sheree Whitfield was 1 of the sleep talkers lol...

I'm so glad they started playing the Jamie Foxx show again. I loved that show growing up. Now all they have to do is pick up Moesha and The Parent Hood.

BET caters to young black kids. I'm not surprised "Don't Sleep" doesn't have much viewers.

I'm actually happy they didn't cancel 106 & Park. I haven't watched that show in YEARS, but let's be honest here no other channel is going to play songs by Omarion, OMG Girlz or Mindless Behavior. It's the only outlet for urban music. I personally don't like it, but it's good the children have something that they can watch.

I might take a look at that "real husband of hollywood" show. It might be funny.

Moesha is on BET's sister network Centric and also on another GMC. They do need to pick up Parent Hood. Check out my Robert Townsend thread on the General Discusion page.

The Pakers is the best they have going on BET. I dont see BET reviving. Its been a little over a decade and they have continued to operate on the same formula. They would have to change ALOT, starting with that ghetto mess of an award show and since Viacom now owns it, I dont see it making significant changes. TV One is the new BET, it is what it is.
