Foley - lead bass and more

Has anyone/does anyone know much about FOLEY, Miles Davis' lead bass player and musical director for the elder's last 7 years? I got a hold of a CDR he released and it smokes. Funny thing is, Prince is a friend of his. You got to check him out at www.smartalecmusic.com!

Foley was supposed to do an album years ago but never did. This is my point about talented black musicians getting screwed by the system. A shame, cause the guy is really talented. More than Prince as of late. lol

I loved Foley's work with Miles Davis. Great musician. I had an old guitar player magazine that had a small record that came with it every month. Foley played in the issue I have and he rips up his piccolo bass in addition to the drums!

2freaky: Was Foley supposed to have a second album out? I have his first. If his label screwed him over that's a damn shame.

Foley plays(ed) a piccolo bass. It's sort of in a middle range register between a regular bass and a lead. But I'm sure he could rip up a lead anytime he wanted.

I had the pleasure of being in a recording studio with Foley & watched him lay down a song. This was back in 88 & I was going to a recording school & we had a session with him. The song was funky as hell & he had some Prince stories to tell since he hovered around in that circle (he was good friends with Benny Rietveld who was Sheila's bassist & later also played with Miles).
And no...I don't remember any of the Prince stories so my reply to this thread is totally useless.
Bye.

It was an instrumental, not so much a song but a simple little jam where he was improvising lyrics using, of all things, a high-squeaky Camille-type voice.
Years later, I discovered that the main groove/line of the song he was doing was from a James Brown song.

Sounds like stuff off of his debt album on MoJazz. I bought the CD the day it came out and still rank it as one of my favorites. That's saying a lot as I have over 1,000 CDs in my collection.

What was it like to watch him work? I hear that he records all the time...

My studio experience was pretty much zero at that point so it was fascinating to see how stuff came together. I really wasn't familiar with Foley at the time but I was excited about the Prince connection (& he had a lot of backstage pass stickers on his case, including a Lovesexy one).
He did the session with a keyboard player (don't remember who it was) who played all the horn parts & Foley played everything else, including live drums. I'm not sure why he had someone else play keys for him (doesn't he play that instrument?) but anyway, it was great to watch.
