I know that he's really speaking about one aspect of the "eduction bubble" in the first clip, but I sort of covered the same issue on the recent D'Angelo thread here. Sure, there seems to be a certain "sense of entitlement" that dominates the manner the current generations behave, but I don't think the older generations are doing much to encourage them to behave differently.

The current educational and economical models simply do not place any value on hard work that pays off in the end. You can get great grades in school just by preparing yourself for the exam on the previous day and, in occupational life, everything is measured by an hourly wage (or at least by how much money you've made in total at the end of each year). Figuring out how to play a certain piece might take anything from 3 minutes to 3 years (that's not even taking into account how long it will take to learn how to improvise properly). That's as foreign as it gets to the current frame of thinking. If a teenager these days is saying that he'd like the spend the summer vacation just by improving his playing skills the parents are going to look at him like he's crazy.

It's really hard for young people to feel motivated to even put that much work into arts & music as everybody keeps telling them that they aren't going to be making any money from it and they'd be better off doing something else. So they end up just sort of dicking around (just look at the amount of ironic joke bands that get started instead of serious bands these days). I know that the ones that have studied under someone like Branford Marsalis should be the ones taking it seriously, but I think it's just a larger attitude problem that gets reflected all across the society (or societies, as I'm European myself).

In short, people aren't encouraged to put work into something that doesn't produce immediate results that everyone else can evaluate too (getting good enough grades as soon as you start your studies or money getting paid on your bank account paid for each instance of putting your time into something).

In any case, first clip FB link'd. razz

^^Good stuff.

Here's a brief documentary on the making of the latest album...

...Four MFs Playin' Tunes Doc & Whiplash

I've known his engineer Rob Hunter for years.

As a matter of fact, i've got a couple of Branford's recorders here for maintenance.

I think the first clip or the series of clip(s) from this film are about a decade old. Right? We had a bit of a dust up over at Harmony Central about this film, some took exception to Marsalis tone and point of view.

The United States was built and founded on a wink. biggrin

Most societies (if not all) are built upon hypocrisy and mendacity; the trick is for the minority to convince the majority that the pursuit of excellence will always be respected, championed, and supported. When in fact, excellence is usually support only when that small group benefits from it and negated if they think someone is striving for excellence because it's seen as a threat to their power or belief system. As Novabrkr mentioned, what's the incentive for young adults to strive and dictate themselves to music let alone anything else when in all likelihood they'll see examples of mediocrity being dressed up and reward as substance?

Great stuff! I don't ever recall Branford biting his tongue. I would say the situation is worst with our youth today than it was when he originally did those interviews. There's absolutely no incentive to learn and grow in your craft. Aside from certain anomalies, the machine is winning sad
