But if someone uses a beatmaker producer, they may not need a traditional engineer.

I have very little knowledge of how beatmakers work or how you get good sound quality out of a god damn Mac book. You'd still need some engineering skill just to get a good vocal to tape. I understand it's a different skill set since hardly anything takes place in front of the mic except vocals.

At any rate I think it goes back to the principle of: if you have people who don't know how to get a good sound, selling music to people who don't appreciate a good sound, you are gonna end up with shitty sounding records.

I totally agree.

And on Junie: How sick is that sound? music Is anyone in R&B, save perhaps Georgia Anne Muldrow, doing funky, odd vocal phrasings like that these days?

If Nicole Renee Harris would get her ass UP! and make a second album, I would've answered "yes" to your question pout

Dude, your probably listening to cd masterings where the engineer applied noise reduction to get rid of tape hiss (Note, this is ALWAYS a TERRIBLE thing, but was the super hip thing for engineers to do in the 80's and early 90's) which completely kills upper and lower frequencies and makes it sound like someone stuffed the music under a blanket. Cd's are always suspect to having bad masterings, If I were you I'd try and find info on different masterings of the albums that you say have that wimpy sound, usually theres at least ONE good cd mastering, otherwise your stuck with vinyl.

Yep, to me, in most cases the original records sound better than the CD's, remastered or not. I remember some cassette players had a Dolby Noise Reduction button for hiss, but I never used it. It sounded better without it.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
