I understand tradition and the difference in mentality.

but I still stand by the position that the word "classic" - an exclusive and should be used rather limited ....
I don`t care if someone not agree. rolleyes

I live in the Uk and consider myself an MJ fan, but I've never heard those songs - to this day.

Exactly..proved my point.

Right! And the reason is not The Jacksons ... just 90% of the real lovers of styles in which they mostly worked are concentrated in the U.S. ...
may be 10-15% of MJ fans in Eastern Europe, I know (it's a lot of people) have an interest in his albums in groups and solo albums in 1971-1975.
They find him cute baby and collect his child pictures, but as an artist he really exists for them only after 1979.
When I discussed with people on his forums, it was never Jackson 5/The Jacksons ... always Michael Michael Michael ... .. I love Bad /Dangerous / History .. All three in my top 40 favorite albums ever ..... but I've heard these albums hundreds of time .... it's not Prince, who has a lot of music and you can listen to an entire month a new album every day .....
I'm glad I discovered the albums of the Jackson ... it`s finally something new .. it's like a breath of fresh air ... even though I'm not usually the biggest fan of this style of music

Azz, I think you should at least hear the songs from the Triumph and Destiny, at least on YouTube ... there are some amazing songs. Both solid albums from start to finish.
I think you will not be disappointed.

I will definitely get round to it.

I've been a really bad MJ fan recently lol

But that's because I started realising his music wasn't quite as perfect as I thought and since find it difficult to listen to a lot of his songs (namely from BAD), either because they're too repetitve, or they've been overplayed or they are dated/follow a formula - whatever reason.

But until I discovered MJ's albums, I had comparatively low interest in music and he will always be the artist who introduced to what some might call 'good' music (MJ > Janet > Prince > Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye > The Beatles > Jimi Hendrix & Joni Mitchel & Bob Dylan... and the list goes on)

opposite for me ....

if 3 years ago, someone said that Michael Jackson - King of Pop ... will be in the top 5 of my favorite artists ... I would have laughed for a long time ... his music seemed so far away from what I usually listen to

in 2010 I first time heard "Give in to me" ...the end... lol I didn't listen to him in the summer of 2009, when there was this mass hysteria ... but only one song made me interested in his music.
I think his music is very catchy and more than that, I like some pop songs in the catalog of Madonna or Pink, but their songs do not affect my mind and heart, they're just a nice background for ears ... it's different with MJ ...
MJ has a lot of great songs, but the range of his solo music, unfortunately, not too wide, so I turned to The Jacksons.
I can't say that I was delighted and that those songs made me a very strong impression (as some solo songs), but they are good enough.

Enjoy Yourself
Living Together
Dreamer
Music's Takin 'Over
Blame It On The Boogie
That's What You Get
Shake Your Body
Can You Feel It

Walk Right Now
Give It Up
Everybody

I like all these songs
listen to them ... I wonder opinion of another European. wink

Okay, exactly a year ago, it was a battle of Destiny and Triumph (Triumph won08-)
Now the number of participants has expanded ... I finally listened to each album in full (some - not just once, many times, to be honest lol )

if with Triumph and Destiny all clear ... it is their top 2, but what about the others?

For me:

1. Triumph 9/10 (the album is really good, I did notice that I prefer it to Off the wall)
2. Destiny 8/10 (some of the best songs for the band ever: Blame It On The Boogie and Shake Your Body)
3. The Jacksons 7/10 (good collection of decent songs, but did not have classic tracks)
4. Goin 'Places 6/10 (it was the last album I listened to... this album usually does not get enough respect, but it`s not bad)

5. Victory 4/10 (a classic example of the album, which is recorded on need .... although I like State of shock ... my dad (not the biggest MJ fan lol ) loves it too).

Opinions... wink

I love The Jacksons so much! I love most of these albums except for two obvious ones. I think the Jacksons were very underrated, I think that Destiny and Triumph are up there with the best of MJ's solo albums.

1. Destiny

2. Triumph (this one may be better than Destiny but I just love Destiny more)

3. The Jacksons (underrated)

4. Goin' Places (underrated as well, I love these both equally but think The Jacksons is a little better)

5. Victory (some good tracks, a few underrated cuts, but overall this album isn't a good product considering its by The Jacksons)

6. 2300 Jackson Street (this isn't fair as I haven't heard the full album yet, but even the album's "highlights" that I've heard don't interest me much)

I used to always think it would be cool if Michael would have stayed with the group and done albums with them in between his solo albums like he did with Off The Wall/Triumph. But then I'm always reminded of Victory lol

It's a shame that MJ's brothers kind of didn't care about music but rather the fame and fortune that came along with it so they just got lost once MJ left. They made such great music.

Someone should do a thread on the later Jackson 5 albums or maybe Jackson 5 albums in general, I still think that some of those later J5 albums (Dancing Machine, G.I.T.) are some of the most underrated albums I've heard. Also would be nice to rank MJ's solo albums at Motown which were pretty awesome also. I think I'm the only one who ranks Forever, Michael and Farewell My Summer Love with any Jacksons records.

I agree completey with this ranking nod

As far as MJ solo Motown lps;

1. Forever Michael

2. Got To be There

3. Ben

4. Music and Me

Jackson 5 lps:

1. Dancing Machine

2. ABC

3. G.I.T.

4. Moving Violation

5. Skywriter

6. Diana Ross Presents…

7. Third Album

8. Looking Through The Windows

9. Going Back To Indiana

10. Maybe Tomorrow

MJ solo on CBS/Epic/Sony

1. OTW

2. Dangerous

3. Thriller

4. HIStory

5. After this who cares. lol It all sucks

If you can’t tell by my ranking I’ve always been a bigger fan of the MJ’s 1973-1978 period! music

I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Bad sucks? eek

I understand and respect the personal taste, but the album is good, at least.

I like G.I.T. as a whole album, Dancing Machine and Moving Violation are decent too. but Jackson 5 were singles oriented group, as many of the Motown`s projects, most of their albums were so-so

Favourite Jackson album for me is TRIUMPH, DESTINY, GOING PLACES, THE JACKSONS and VICTORY in that order. Infact I prefer the albums mentioned to the likes of BAD and DANGEROUS. I also think MJ most creative period were the years from 1978 to 1982, when he was producing albums with his brothers and as a solo artist. The Jackson albums in general are filled with the soul that mj solo albums tend to lack.

I completely agree with your MJ Motown solo ranking as well! lol

For me the rest goes like this:

Jackson 5

1. G.I.T.

2. Dancing Machine

3. ABC

4. Jackson 5 Christmas Album

5. Moving Violation

6. Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5

7. Goin' Back To Indiana

8. Third Album

9. Skywriter

10. Maybe Tomorrow

11. Lookin' Through The Windows

MJ solo Epic/Sony

1. Off The Wall (my favorite album of all-time, and I have many favorites from many artists)

2. Dangerous

(these two switch back and forth for me but right now Dangerous is on top)

3. Thriller

4. Bad

5. HIStory (if only the weaker songs were cut out this would be a masterpiece)

6. Invincible (disappointing, with less filler it could've been solid but still not great)

7. Blood On The Dance Floor: HIStory In The Mix (had this been released as a 5-track EP of new songs, it would rank way higher but I think some of the remixes are lame.)

I would rank Farewell My Summer Love and Looking Back To Yesterday but technically they're compilations so we would have to add Boogie, and Soulsation! and countless other compilations with unreleased music. Now that I look at it, The Jackson 5 are really underrated, most of those albums don't get play even from me but most of them are solid and have tons of gems. I gotta listen to them again.

That's not unusual before the mid 1970's. Many acts released 2 or 3 albums a year, and some released non-album singles in addition to that. There was a 2 year period in the late 1960's when James Brown released close to 11 albums. Session musicians & singers might have participated in dozens of albums a year. Jazz musicians often recorded with multiple acts. Even in the 1970's, the average act released 1 album a year. The waiting several years between albums really started in the 1980's, mostly with bigger acts.

I know that there were other hard workers too.
but they are still kids, formal they had to go to school too.

Why was it necessary to produce so much stuff?
almost every album of Jackson 5 - a few good songs and the rest - filler. They could with all this material recorded on the 11 albums, make 5-6 great albums.
Jackson 5 - one extreme.
MJ solo post 1979 - another extreme.

The Jacksons, I think, chose good algorithm.

In some cases, it wasn't a choice by the act. Groups were required by the record companies to record a certain amount of material. The J5 had to record a Christmas album and perform the national anthem, while being Jehovah's Witnesses, who don't recognize these things. The Monkees had to constantly record and film a TV show at the same time. So did other acts who had variety shows like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, etc. They had to do concerts too.

The Jacksons weren't the 1st kid act, and not the last.

I am not sure what u are going on about. I said mj most creative period was between 1978 and 1982, and your going on about BAD and VICTORY! Victory was 84 and BAD 87. If you read my post properly you will know I am not that impress with MJ latter solo material including the likes of BAD, DANGEROUS AND HISTORY. Imo they lack the kind of soul that the music he did with his brothers had.

Also having lived in 3 continents over the period of 4 decades, I have been hearing the JACKSONS music from AFRICA TO Europe to the States where I live now for over the decades. Infact the first time I heard Let Me Show You The Way To I was living in London in the UK in the late 70s, that just goes to show even less popular music was known world wide, unless you came from Eastern Europe. Whereas the rest of the world had heard of MJ prior to Thriller, Eastern Europe probably didn't start knowing about MJ until BAD, which imo is a mighty shame.

Music's Takin' Over, Different Kinda Lady, Find me A Girl, Do What You Wanna, Jump For Joy

All recorded in my city, Philly!

Though I would add Even Though You're Gone and say that Goin' Places is a pretty good song, Man Of War is not good but not bad, only Heaven Knows I Love You, Girl is really weak.

And for Victory, I like the songs mentioned and Torture, everything else I don't really like that much and MJ's Be Not Always is probably his worst song ever IMO.

I don`t know, you just have to be in a relaxed state, to hear this song, you know.
although yes, a bit boring lol

Victory, I don`t like. State of shock - a very cool song, but that's about it, IMHO.

We all know that Michael didnt want to work on this album and I think that he didnt even try to make a good album ... did simply because he must ... good albums rarely come under duress.
+by the time the brothers didnt have that special bond that was in childhood and adolescence.

And for Victory, I like the songs mentioned and Torture, everything else I don't really like that much and MJ's Be Not Always is probably his worst song ever IMO.

Have you ever heard Privacy? lol
Be Not Always - just mediocrity, but Privacy - just creepy horror. I hate this song with a passion. One of the worst songs ever.

True about Heaven Knows I Love You, Girl, I mean it's like the sappiest recording they ever did, had it been on a Jackson 5 album it might do better but The Jacksons had to go for a more mature sound, although MJ's vocals are lovely on it and when I'm in the mood it isn't really that bad.

Oh yeah, Privacy and a bunch of Invincible tracks lol

Yeah I meant to say that Be Not Always was one of his worst songs ever, there are some other tracks like Privacy that are even worse. I just feel that Be Not Always is more boring, I've only made it through this song like twice, and while I dislike Privacy when I play Invincible in it's entirety (not often) I just listen to it and it doesn't bore me to death although it's worse. So I guess I just listen to Privacy more because I listen to Invincible more than I listen to Victory (I don't ever skip tracks when listening to an album).

To everyone rating Victory so low, what are you loving on Goin' Places exactly??

Victory is great!

Most people, including the OP, skipped 2300 altogether.

OP yesterday for the first time carried out an attempt to listen to this album in full. wink
Constantly caught myself thinking that I am waiting when MJ will start singing his part of the song, so this album is sent directly to the 6th place.

The worst is when any of them released an album and the best was the time in between albums. No Jacksons are good Jacksons.
