Right! And the reason is not The Jacksons ... just 90% of the real lovers of styles in which they mostly worked are concentrated in the U.S. ...
Azz, I think you should at least hear the songs from the Triumph and Destiny, at least on YouTube ... there are some amazing songs. Both solid albums from start to finish.

I will definitely get round to it.
I've been a really bad MJ fan recently
But that's because I started realising his music wasn't quite as perfect as I thought and since find it difficult to listen to a lot of his songs (namely from BAD), either because they're too repetitve, or they've been overplayed or they are dated/follow a formula - whatever reason.
But until I discovered MJ's albums, I had comparatively low interest in music and he will always be the artist who introduced to what some might call 'good' music (MJ > Janet > Prince > Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye > The Beatles > Jimi Hendrix & Joni Mitchel & Bob Dylan... and the list goes on) [Edited 12/17/12 9:09am]

opposite for me .... if 3 years ago, someone said that Michael Jackson - King of Pop ... will be in the top 5 of my favorite artists ... I would have laughed for a long time ... his music seemed so far away from what I usually listen to
in 2010 I first time heard "Give in to me" ...the end... I didn't listen to him in the summer of 2009, when there was this mass hysteria ... but only one song made me interested in his music.

I agree completey with this ranking
As far as MJ solo Motown lps;
1. Forever Michael
2. Got To be There
3. Ben
4. Music and Me
Jackson 5 lps:
1. Dancing Machine
2. ABC
3. G.I.T.
4. Moving Violation
5. Skywriter
6. Diana Ross Presents…
7. Third Album
8. Looking Through The Windows
9. Going Back To Indiana
10. Maybe Tomorrow
MJ solo on CBS/Epic/Sony
1. OTW
2. Dangerous
3. Thriller
4. HIStory
5. After this who cares. It all sucks
If you can’t tell by my ranking I’ve always been a bigger fan of the MJ’s 1973-1978 period!
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Triumph and Destiny will do.
I like both the same. 2014-Year of the Parties

Bad sucks? ----------------------- I like G.I.T. as a whole album, Dancing Machine and Moving Violation are decent too. but Jackson 5 were singles oriented group, as many of the Motown`s projects, most of their albums were so-so .............................
I don`t think Goin Places was SO bad.

Favourite Jackson album for me is TRIUMPH, DESTINY, GOING PLACES, THE JACKSONS and VICTORY in that order. Infact I prefer the albums mentioned to the likes of BAD and DANGEROUS. I also think MJ most creative period were the years from 1978 to 1982, when he was producing albums with his brothers and as a solo artist. The Jackson albums in general are filled with the soul that mj solo albums tend to lack.

I honestly listen to Jacksons and Triumph and Victory more than Destiny as well.

I completely agree with your MJ Motown solo ranking as well!
For me the rest goes like this:
Jackson 5 1. G.I.T. 2. Dancing Machine 3. ABC 4. Jackson 5 Christmas Album 5. Moving Violation 6. Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 7. Goin' Back To Indiana 8. Third Album 9. Skywriter 10. Maybe Tomorrow 11. Lookin' Through The Windows
MJ solo Epic/Sony 1. Off The Wall (my favorite album of all-time, and I have many favorites from many artists) 2. Dangerous (these two switch back and forth for me but right now Dangerous is on top) 3. Thriller 4. Bad 5. HIStory (if only the weaker songs were cut out this would be a masterpiece) 6. Invincible (disappointing, with less filler it could've been solid but still not great) 7. Blood On The Dance Floor: HIStory In The Mix (had this been released as a 5-track EP of new songs, it would rank way higher but I think some of the remixes are lame.)
I would rank Farewell My Summer Love and Looking Back To Yesterday but technically they're compilations so we would have to add Boogie, and Soulsation! and countless other compilations with unreleased music. Now that I look at it, The Jackson 5 are really underrated, most of those albums don't get play even from me but most of them are solid and have tons of gems. I gotta listen to them again.

so for you ------------------------------------ Jackson 5 released 11 albums during 6 years (1969-1975)
11 albums in 6 years ... crazy.

That's not unusual before the mid 1970's. Many acts released 2 or 3 albums a year, and some released non-album singles in addition to that. There was a 2 year period in the late 1960's when James Brown released close to 11 albums. Session musicians & singers might have participated in dozens of albums a year. Jazz musicians often recorded with multiple acts. Even in the 1970's, the average act released 1 album a year. The waiting several years between albums really started in the 1980's, mostly with bigger acts. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I know that there were other hard workers too.
Why was it necessary to produce so much stuff?

In some cases, it wasn't a choice by the act. Groups were required by the record companies to record a certain amount of material. The J5 had to record a Christmas album and perform the national anthem, while being Jehovah's Witnesses, who don't recognize these things. The Monkees had to constantly record and film a TV show at the same time. So did other acts who had variety shows like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, etc. They had to do concerts too.
The Jacksons weren't the 1st kid act, and not the last. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I am not sure what u are going on about. I said mj most creative period was between 1978 and 1982, and your going on about BAD and VICTORY! Victory was 84 and BAD 87. If you read my post properly you will know I am not that impress with MJ latter solo material including the likes of BAD, DANGEROUS AND HISTORY. Imo they lack the kind of soul that the music he did with his brothers had. Also having lived in 3 continents over the period of 4 decades, I have been hearing the JACKSONS music from AFRICA TO Europe to the States where I live now for over the decades. Infact the first time I heard Let Me Show You The Way To I was living in London in the UK in the late 70s, that just goes to show even less popular music was known world wide, unless you came from Eastern Europe. Whereas the rest of the world had heard of MJ prior to Thriller, Eastern Europe probably didn't start knowing about MJ until BAD, which imo is a mighty shame. [Edited 1/5/13 14:18pm]

To everyone rating Victory so low, what are you loving on Goin' Places exactly??
Victory is great! | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Music's Takin' Over, Different Kinda Lady, Find me A Girl, Do What You Wanna, Jump For Joy
All recorded in my city, Philly!
On Victory the only cuts I listen to are Wait, One More Chance, and State Of Shock. I'm not a big fan of the rest of that album [Edited 1/8/13 1:08am]

This ^
Though I would add Even Though You're Gone and say that Goin' Places is a pretty good song, Man Of War is not good but not bad, only Heaven Knows I Love You, Girl is really weak.
And for Victory, I like the songs mentioned and Torture, everything else I don't really like that much and MJ's Be Not Always is probably his worst song ever IMO.

I don`t know, you just have to be in a relaxed state, to hear this song, you know.
Have you ever heard Privacy?

Most people, including the OP, skipped 2300 altogether. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. True about Heaven Knows I Love You, Girl, I mean it's like the sappiest recording they ever did, had it been on a Jackson 5 album it might do better but The Jacksons had to go for a more mature sound, although MJ's vocals are lovely on it and when I'm in the mood it isn't really that bad.
Oh yeah, Privacy and a bunch of Invincible tracks
Yeah I meant to say that Be Not Always was one of his worst songs ever, there are some other tracks like Privacy that are even worse. I just feel that Be Not Always is more boring, I've only made it through this song like twice, and while I dislike Privacy when I play Invincible in it's entirety (not often) I just listen to it and it doesn't bore me to death although it's worse. So I guess I just listen to Privacy more because I listen to Invincible more than I listen to Victory (I don't ever skip tracks when listening to an album).

The worst is when any of them released an album and the best was the time in between albums. No Jacksons are good Jacksons.
