the natural progresssion would be to get goats head soup, the follow up to exile and the last of the great jimmy miller albums. after that, the stones were on a decline

after that, take a trip back the way to beggars banquet, the first of the jimmy miller albums

from then tread carefully if going forwards as the albums decline, and likewise the early albums require a careful tread, but i'd suggest satantic majesties next, which is the most different stones album and their take on sgt pepper. some people don't like it as it's very different to everything else the stones did, but it is a great album with some great tracks like she's a rainbow and 2,000 light years from home. exile is the stones on the brown stuff whilst majesties is the stones on acid

I would actually go for the Singles Collection: The London Years next. Up until Aftermath, their albums were mainly compilations of blues and R&B covers. A lot of it is quite good by British Invasion standards, but the best stuff tended to be released as singles.

If you do decide to get deeper into the earlier stuff, be careful about whether you're buying the U.S. or U.K. versions. The U.S. versions have fewer songs but include hit singles that were left off the U.K. albums; however, if you have the Singles Collection the U.K. versions are preferable.

On a different topic, anyone going to one of the upcoming gigs in NYC/NJ? I am going to the Prudential Center on the 13th. Would be fun to meet any orgers who happen to be there. Reports on the U.K. concerts have been very positive, but the tickets are crazy expensive.

a collection like hot rocks is a good place to start with the older stuff, but goats head soup is the last of the great albums and is exiles sequel with the same producer

Go to Youtube and listen to each album and see which one's you like.

BTW, this is somewhat off topic, but for Americans seeking out U.K. pressings of early Stones albums (and Beatles, Floyd, Zeppelin, etc.), it's amazing how much cheaper they are if you come to England and go to actual record shops rather than looking on eBay. It wouldn't cover the cost of airfare, hotel, etc., but if you're here anyway, it's certainly worth the time.

Tattoo You and Mick's solo project, She's the Boss, which features production from axeman extraordinaire Nile Rodgers.

I actually recommend the new 3CD GRRR! compilation, you can't go wrong with that one!
