Mariahs version is pretty good its just not extended like cherrelle version. It also seems remastered with better bass and jimmy and terry knocked the kickdrum up so it thumps a lot more than the original

Yeah, I guess that is the difference.

U alright mate? Is that Jason in your profile pic?

I always liked this song-but only Cherelle and Mariah's versions. I never cared for Robert's attempt and agree it sounds better with a woman singing it.

On your recommandation I have now viewed the Mariah version, and indeed, it is not bad at all. The backing tracks sound like 95% the same to me as in Cherrelle's version. I am glad they didn't try to update the sounds for this version.

Cool. Glad you liked it. Yeah it sounds like they didn't replay it just took the old tracks and re-mastered them.

You can't really get the old synth sounds from the 80s anymore even with the emulators.

You should listen to the song: "All My Life". It's by Rick James and it has the 80s feel like something Rick would've done back then and had Teena Marie or Val Young sing.

In the movie, Padma Lakshmie is a "Vanity" like character who is singing it ("Silk") with Mariah and Da Brat as "Brenda" and "Susan" background singers, but Silk can't sing so they have Mariah sing it but pretend it's Silk. That's why it starts with "Turn Silk down.... turn Billie (Mariah) WAY UP!"

Here's the song:

Here's the scene in the movie:

Thanks for posting this! It's been awhile since I've heard this Slick Rick production. Was this Rick James' last song he produced? He was still in fine form if it was. Great jam!

I remember first hearing the original (by Cherrelle) on the radio in Boston in 1984. I was SO EXCITED because I had just read a little blurb about her in Billboard the previous week. It touted her as being "a perky and sassy Soul sista under the guise of Flyte Tyme." It appeared that when CBS issued it back then, it was only "instrumental," meaning there were no vocals on it (a mistake perhaps?,) so I ended up having 2 wait until the entire album was released 2 hear my all-time favorite Funk jam! I absolutely fell in love with her! She was a breath of fresh air to R&B then and she had all the makings of becoming a star! Sadly, her career kinda fizzed out too soon. She has Flyte Tyme written all over her. I could hear her doin' ANY of Karyn White's songs or even some of the "Rhythm Nation 1814" stuff. I wish she would reunite with J&L and kick sumpthin' HOT out! smile

Good to hear you're doing great! I am doing fine too, but unfortunately out of a job. It is very hard to get a job now in Holland, so I am a bit worried for my family. But apart from that I am feeling fine and happy.

Yeah, wouldn't it be great to meet with you guys one day and create a funk jam!
