Meshell Ndegeocello & James "Blood" Ulmer - UCLA

[img:$uid]http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b59/jbodine/Covers%20II/Ndegeocello-UCLA.jpg[/img:$uid]

Join us for an evening with two distinctly inventive artists. Renowned bassist, singer, songwriter and 10-time Grammy nominee Meshell Ndegeocello writes, records and performs unpredictable, boundary-defying music in rock, jazz, funk, soul and more. Her killer band features Deantoni Parks on drums, Jebin Bruni on keys and Chris Bruce on guitar.

Meshell’s 10th album—Pour une ame souveraine (For a sovereign soul) - A dedication to Nina Simone—arrives October 9. It is a luminous collection of songs that pays homage to a music legend and features special guests Sinead O'Conner, Lizz Wright, Valerie June, Toshi Reagon and Cody ChesnuTT. Listen to a track from the coming album at NPR’s “All Songs Considered” blog.

Harmolodic guitarist, blues singer and composer James “Blood” Ulmer brings his thrilling Memphis Blood crew featuring master axman Vernon Reid (of Living Color), along with a full band featuring violin, mandolin, keys, harmonica, drums and bass. Ulmer draws upon a spectrum of music forms free jazz to deep-funk to bebop to avant-soul and beyond. The New York Times calls Mr. Ulmer’s guitar tone “… a gasping, metallic cry, that expresses everything from out-in-the-woods loneliness to nail-chewing, urban anxiety.”

I went Saturday night in Detroit. I thought the show was amazing. There were some sound issues early on but she took them all in stride. And when she gets into her trance, ooh wee!!! drool

This show was in direct contract to the last time I saw her. She had a terrbile attitude, played with her back to the audience and played no bass. I promised I would never see here again but I am soooo glad I changed my mind. Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood was killer!!! headbang

I heard about the Detroit show the day OF and couldn't go on such short notice! sad I would've love to see her and Vernon on the same bill. I saw a portion of her free outdoor show here in Detroit in the summer before the rains came. Her 'tude was OFF that day too.

Wow, you think so? I was at that show and I didn't think her attitude was bad at all. She didn't talk much but to me she seemed fine, and was genuinely sorry when she had to cut the set short due to the rain. I thought it was nice of her to let us onstage when it started raining, and a good friend of mine even gave her a hug when she was coming offstage. Despite the rain,I thought it was a great set and my 7 year old daughter even enjoyed it! I also saw her two weeks ago in Chicago and I'd say that was my favorite show of hers out of the 4 times I've saw her.

Great Show!, Vernon Reid can still shred like a maniac, and James Ulmer sang some great stuff.

There set was rather short... and i wish i could have seen more.

Meshell was great, she did a bunch of Nina Simone covers & her band sounded as tight & magnificent as can be.
