Rollins Stone Names Top 50 Hip-Hop Songs

I figured fight the power or the message would be number 1...

Therest of the list as usual with RS is so-so

1. “The Message” – Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

2. “Rapper’s Delight” – Sugarhill Gang

3. “Planet Rock” – Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force

4. “Sucker M.C.’s” – Run-DMC

5. “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” – Geto Boys

6. “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang” – Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Doggy Dogg

7. “Fight the Power” – Public Enemy

8. “Juicy” – Notorious B.I.G.

9. “Straight Outta Compton” – N.W.A.

10. “Paid in Full” – Erik B. and Rakim

I guess they haven't gotten the message that nobody thinks they're relevant anymore. Their credibility has been shot a long time ago. They've been riding on their namesake for decades now. When you read most of their list, they come off like they got some guy down the hall to tally up some billboard stats and compile a list together.

I'd have replaced the Geto Boys and Biggie with at least one Tribe or De La song.

"Juicy" isn't even Biggie's greatest track.

Whether its his top single or not I dont think a Biggie song OVER 2PAC should be in top 10.....

Rolling Stones get on my damn nerves.... and then they have Dre and Snoops song in top 10, What are they smoking nuts

Maybe 100 but their are SOOOO many other songs they failed to acknowledged.

This is both a good & bad list...

For one they had some deep cuts. So if they had songs that where not released as singles being chosen like

Lost Ones by Lauryn Hill or Paul Rever by Beastie Boys.

I think if they where doing just non singles, they could have dug even deeper for what everyone think's is the best.

Plus it only had 33 people weighing in.... that is not a lot.

Probably 33 old people who just based their opinion off the singles they have heard lol

Rolling Stones never gets it right but this list is better than all those other outrageous lists they have made. I mean how do they expect people to take them seriously placing Juicy over Straight Outta Compton? eek

I like Juicy and that Dre/Snoop song I think they are classics but I wouldnt put them in no damn top 10 greatest hip hop songs of all time.. cmon AND then had the audacity to place them above NWA and Rakim Paid in Full lol

I stand corrected after reviewing the entire list. The list isn't all bad as I originally anticipated. I think the further you go up the list, the bigger the song's commercial success. Therein lies the my problem. For instance, they chose two of Biggie's songs; "Hypnotize" and "Juicy." What a waste. Sure Biggie deserved a place on the list but neither one of those songs belong razz

Another example, Tupac's "Dear Mama". I would replace DM with "So Many Tears". It's just a better song period. One of the best from Pac's catalog too. Another missed opportunity.

However some of the earlier ones mentioned was good to see included. I had forgotten about some of them. The little factoids were also cool.

I didn't know RUN-DMC had to fight for the first single release of "My Adidas/Peter Piper" instead of "Walk This Way." They probably knew Walk This Way would blow up and wanted to make sure the streets we're taken care of before they went and made that crossover money lol RIP JMJ

You know what, now that you mentioned it, I do remember old interviews with them saying they weren't feeling the idea of it at first.

Some of the artist belong on the list but they chose the wrong songs to honor. Some songs belong but are misplaced (some worst than others). But as with most "Best of' list" many artists and songs were not mentioned. But that's the case with these things. It's still not as bad as I thought it would be.

I'm glad they had some credibility by talking to Chuck D, Busta, Rick Rubin, etc.

At least they are giving the veterans and trailblazers credit. Honestly, I thought I was only going to see 2 or 3 old-school hip-hop artists in the Top Ten. I actually know most of the songs they listed!biggrin

Okay so I looked over the list and I agree with everyone here, the list is not bad. But a MAJOR problem with it is certain placements like placing Jay Z's 99 problems/ Big Pimpin above LL Mama Said Knock You or Ices- It Was a Good Day... Placing Eminems My Name is eek thats not even his best song :/ artists like those dont belong no where near a greatest HIP HOP lists. Keep them on Rap. 2pac is briefly mentioned once or twice and the song selections were not strong ones the same for Biggie.

It seems most of the singles were pop hits by rappers and not culturally defining songs that represented hip hip. Overall, I still dont like the list.

Why are you getting so hyped about Rolling Stone. That magazine is as vanilla as they come like this list. It's based on sales and influence.

If they did an 80s top songs list.Everyone knows Billie Jean would be on top.If they did 90s list.It would undoubtedly be "Smells Like Teen Spirit".Sales and influence, not your personal preference.

You dont know a got damn thing about nothing, ALL you do is run your mouth and talk bullshit over the computer because in real life your a punk ass bitch.

I dont know what your delusional problem is but Im going to let you know since nobody else obviously has, YOU ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT to be talking down on others like you run this site. You dont run shit but your ignorant mouth.

You sit down and this time STAY DOWN.

I cant wait till these mods start doing there jobs and ban you permanently
